But what hasn't changed is that while my child is at school, he is safe, happy, learning and growing up to be a good human in this difficult world. He always has, and continues to acquire skills and traits at school that I feel are important beyond academics, such as being of service, being a confident speaker, good social skills, empathy for others, and a respect for his environment/community, just to name a few. Since my last review, we have had the pleasure of having Mrs. Hofmann in 1st grade, Ms. Nakae in 2nd grade, and currently Ms. Flores in 3rd. We have enjoyed all of them as teachers. Mrs. Hughes is still going strong as the kindergarten teacher as well. We also have a new principal this year, Mr. Kim. Mr. Kim has truly been an amazing leader so far. I am so grateful to have him at our school. The office staff is also wonderful. Our school community may be small, but it is filled with families, staff, and teachers who truly care about making these children's elementary and junior high experience a great one. Nothing ever stays the same, and that is okay! We are fully embracing the positive changes that are happening at St James. I am honestly so happy that we chose this school community for our child, and will continue to do all we can to support the students and the growth of the school, as I know it can only continue to get better and better!

I remember the TUSD administrative staff being nice but not so patient. Today, the administrative team at TUSD couldn't be more helpful! When I had a question the TUSD team went out of their way to help me. They provided clear and easy to understand direction and took their time. Martha, Melissa, Alyssa, Lisa, Alma or Maria were a pleasure to meet. It's just feels good when people are nice and treat you with consideration and respect. Kudos TUSD for having a talented administrative team!

They answered all my questions, made sure I had completed and turned in all required paperwork properly before I left. One day, as I was struggling to copy notes from the projector, a teacher named Mrs. Holly took my notebook, held it up, and announced to the class that I was "illiterate." In reality, I needed glasses--something I didn't know at the time--and I had already stopped asking for help after repeated ridicule from some educators. Not all staff were like this, but too many were indifferent or dismissive. The atmosphere often made me feel like children were expected to be "seen and not heard," as my stepfather used to say. Incidents like being pantsed by other kids and then getting in trouble for "exposing myself" left me confused and humiliated. Years later, at 23, I was finally diagnosed with focus-related issues and put on medication, which changed my life for the better--no more energy drinks or alcohol just to function around the lifelong fog, and no more feeling like the "lazy kid" teachers rolled their eyes at because they thought I just wasn't "trying hard enough." I'm 41 now and still processing how those experiences shaped me. I'm sharing this not out of bitterness, but as a reminder for parents, educators, and the public: children's struggles aren't always behavioral or a lack of effort. Sometimes they simply need someone to notice, listen, and care. One very undeserved star since it is required to post.

However, there is a lack of discipline when it comes to verbal bullying and harassment. Students cannot count on their authorities to protect them. The visual and performing art programs are quite underfunded. The school prioritizes the football program, which brings in the most money and that favouritism goes so far as extra effort being made to keep those athletes in school. They do this by putting them in the art classes for an easy A (where they don't do the work and show no interest, while taking up the spots of students who actually want to take art) And by avoiding giving them expulsion or suspension, even if that means turning a blind eye when they bully their peers. Pretty standard for a high-school, I guess.

They wrote him something called a "step program", They never followed it. The teachers berated him and treated him as if he were a bad child. The "dean of men" told me that he would never treat my child any differently than the other kids. Even though, my son struggled with some neurodivergent issues. We are still dealing with the repercussions of having gone to this school. Do not send your child to Bishop Montgomery High School. Particularly if they are neurodivergent in any way.

We did just that almost 14 years ago and have never been happier with any investment in our entire life. My son started out at age 2 1/2 going in the mornings just three days a week. He was under the tutelage of Ms. Jennifer (the owner/director), Ms. Richards and Ms. Precious. During my son's time at the school, he blossomed into a toddler that looked adults in the eye, shook your hand with a firm grip and even put the toilet seat down. (To me, having a little boy do that was impressive!) All of this with great love, care and guidance. At TCP, they teach even "high energy" boys how to control themselves, but again, always with love, caring and guidance. He moved on from the toddler class as a full time attendee for kindergarten and elementary school learning the basics with an amazing foundation that stayed with him through his later years. As mentioned by Keila N., if your child excels in a subject, they will be allowed to learn with older kids and to maximize their growth potential. If there is a weakness, that is fully maximized so that they gain strength and confidence there too. My son has grown to be a bright, healthy teenager who is going to an excellent private school in the So Bay area. The friendships he made through the sixth grade at TCP are life lasting friendships with other great quality kids that know how to handle themselves around other teenagers and adults alike. His friends from the school go to West, South, Long Beach and one is even in a special program for kids that excel through a University in LA. Because of the self worth and self esteem fostered in his early years he has the strength to withstand the pressures teenagers face growing up in the South Bay or any big city.

My little cousin went this school but it wasn't really a great experience. He's was often picked on…read moreand discriminated against because of his skin, and height. The principal's Mrs. Wells and Ms. Aguirre did their best to diffuse a lot of the situations, and work with my cousin, but between the some of the students, the lady Ms. Reb that worked the front office , the yard guards ( Ms Schm. and Ms De La C) and his first grade teacher Ms. M, he had a hard time adjusting. His second grade (H) and third grade teacher (Mr. C) were so much better, but he still had problems and then pandemic happened. Once the pandemic was declared to be over, my aunt tried to enroll him, but the lady at the office informed her it would be hard to enroll on campus because of the problems he had with the students. They penalized him even though he was being bullied by the first grade teacher and the students. So my aunt kept him in homeschool outside of LAUSD, and he's been thriving ever since.
