Unbeknownst to me, this is a Grass Valley restaurant defying the COVID-19 dining orders very publicly and with pride. Had I known this, I would not have given them my patronage. I'm disappointed people are still this irresponsible and selfish. That being said, my review is for the food. Put simply, as far as italian food goes... Very very subpar. We had the spaghetti and meatballs (bland and tasteless), the special crusted halibut (also bland, tasteless, and way overcooked), and the chicken picatta - which was decent but also sub par. The one redeeming dish was the soup special, a watermelon gazpacho which was delicious. Their vegetable soup was also very good, but no challenge there. Readily observed the owner flaunting the mask rule and interacting very close with customers, at one point holding up a table turnover for nearly 20min because he was chatting.... And he's a face talker. Clearly not safe and very clearly irresponsible to himself, his family, and his customers. I will never eat here again regardless of COVID. The blatant selfishness and poor food quality speaks volumes. read more

A lovely restaurant in a lovely town! I come from NY, and everything about this town and the neighboring ones just make me smile. The blocks of little community stores and cleanliness of it all is what I live for!! My grandma LOVES this place and the service. We made a reservation for 830 on a Saturday and there were only a few people in there, but it's not a big place or a very lively town from what I saw so the amount of people in there was great. I ordered the Caesar app because I was not hungry in the slightest and it was very good. Not drenched in dressing and could use a ew more croutons but good nonetheless. Their pasta looks aaaaaaaaamazing. We saw it all coming out of the kitchen and the smells and presentation were all looking A+. Everyone else I was with ordered some type of seafood pasta and the owner even made a dish for my mom that wasn't on the menu!! Gotta love that. We then ordered the tiramisu for dessert which was perfect. Not too strong of a coffee taste, perfectly sized to share with 2 or 3, and so creamy. Absolute heaven. It has a great vibe inside. Definitely saw more of an older crowd this time but can see it being ideal for any type of situation- family events, date night, whatever. My wife and I went there for dinner on a Saturday night a couple weeks ago. We had 7:30 reservations but didn't need them as the restaurant was about two-third full. We were promptly seated and were given menus and had the specials explained to us. Our waiter came back shortly and we ordered a bottle of wine, crab cake appetizers and our main course. My wife had the chicken parmigiana and I had the pork loin special. The waiter brought us our bottle of wine and then before we could have a few sips he brought us our crab cakes. Then us soon as we finished them the busboy took our plates and the waiter immediately brought us our entrees. No time at all to savor our food or wine. We still had half a bottle of wine left when we finished eating. Needless to say, we were very rushed through our dinner. We were in and out in 40 minutes. They don't close until 9:00 and there wasn't anyone waiting. If I wanted fast food we would have gone to the drive thru. We go out to dinner to have a nice relaxing meal, not to be part of a speed contest. The food was good but with that type of service, we won't go back. read more

My Wife and I were in Grass Valley to celebrate our anniversary. When we are there, we always get the crab cakes to go. they were the worst crab cakes ever. I could tell the oil they used to fried them in so was old. the cakes where burnt as well. Crab meat wasn't fresh either, not to say it was bad. Being a chef, I was truly disappointed. I have a family of five. Two people over 70, one under 6, and my husband and myself. Almost every weekly date night. All 5 birthdays and then some. Family dinners to celebrate everything, and sometimes nothing. Every single guest from out of town, and anyone who asked for a suggestion. Sergios. The food is a little overpriced, but we enjoyed it, and the service and especially the outdoor seating, much easier for my husband to navigate as he is blind and often accompanied by his service dog. When Covid hit, we made. a point to do a rotating takeout schedule of our small handful of favorites-we ordered extra and tipped 30% to support the places that we cared about, and that knew us by name. We were so upset when they chose to defy the Covid orders, and even more so when they hung signs in the window that were fraudulent, aggressive ADA law misrepresentations. My husband is a community disability advocate-his job is to know ADA law and see its enforced. To see such an important and hard-won law that protects those who, until recently, struggled for quality of life abused and intentionally misinterpreted so people could attempt to break the rules that ironically put truly disabled people more at risk was certainly a slap in the face. I wrote a very carefully and kind but concerned comment about this on their Facebook page, it was promptly deleted. My Mother in Law, who Sergio himself knows by her voice when she calls, called the restaurant in hopes to at least ask that the fraudulent signs be removed-he refused to speak with her, even though he was standing right there. Then, the city shut down the street to appease them, and another dissenter eatery not worth mention-at the detriment of many foot traffic dependent businesses who are also struggling...and they doubled down and still wouldn't consider the safety of their customers. They traded us lifers in for a small but vocal group of covid-hoaxers that will disappear as soon as the cameras do. So disappointing. I am a cancer survivor. My in-laws are both nearing 80. they are healthy as horses but this virus could take them from us way too early, and me from my kindergartener son. My husband is unable to see who is around him, or if people are masked or washing the table or how far away they are. We may be "old and sick" but our money is still good-apparently not good enough. We understand the financial strain and did our best to relieve some of it-but were essentially told that if we were vulnerable, we should stay home. So we will. Long after this virus passes. Our birthdays and celebrations and date nights will go elsewhere, not so much because of the defiance, but more so because of our treatment from the very place we had considered "family" for many, many years. We part ways with great sadness-and wish them luck. read more

We had a reservation - I would say it's best to make a reservation. It gets crowded outside fast. We were there before the lunch crowd showed up and we got served with in 15-20 min. When It got crowded I could see that it was taking a while for people to be served. I only saw one waiter covering the outside - The service was excellent. It was lunch and the menu is large - I had the Smoked Salmon Sandwich on chapla bread - it was really large and good and the salad was fresh and generous. Great experience: the BLT with avocado on ciabatta was Yums! Tons of bacon, ripe tomatoes and nicely sliced avocados on toasted ciabatta with a side of home cut fries was perfect. My husband had the Turkey with havarti sandwich and it was also Yums. Josephine, our server, was especially nice and made sure our food was good and that we had everything that we needed. I have eattian there for lunch 20 times and was always good, Went to dinner july 3rd and had veal piccata and CALAMARI STEAK with way to sweet sauce. I should have know something was wrong when they brought out steak knifes. They were needed for both. the fish was real fishy hard to chew, veal should cut with a fork, not. and they had 12 people working most just talking to them self's. read more

Happened upon this awesome restaurant as we were walking through downtown grass valley. Our server Tyler was great and recommended the calamari, and mussels and clam appetizers which were incredible! We followed this up with the rack of lamb and fresh halibut special which were the best we've had in a long time. We sat next to the piano player which we absolutely loved as he was incredibly talented and played some of our favorite songs beautifully. Went to dinner there last Sunday and it was delicious. My husband had the filet mignon on special and I had the pistachio crusted halibut. Both were very good. They had live music with a Frank Sinatra style singer and he was very fun to watch and listen to. We sat outside on mill street at one of their outdoor tables and enjoyed the evening. My family and I decided to go on a mini roadtrip up north to see the leaves change. But unfortunately before we headed out, we didn't call and found out it was too early to make the trip. We came across this small town and decided to walk around to stretch our legs after the two hour drive. We even checked out a few of their real estate. At one of the houses, my dad asked the real estate agent what he recommends to eat around here and this is the first place he mentioned. Thankfully it was within walking distance. Upon entering, we were glad that although they were busy, they had a table open for us to sit. The place is well decorated and even has a bar. I believe there was only one waitress on the floor, so you should be able to imagine the size of the place. She came over and asked us what we would like to drink. My sister and mom ordered Italian sodas and my dad and I ordered soda pop. When she came back to give us our drinks, she took our orders. We all ordered from the lunch special menu. I was surprised by how well she was handling all those tables on her own. Never did we feel neglected throughout our meal. I believe I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs. It was really good. The noodles were al dente. The meatballs were juicy and very flavorful. The sauce wasn't sour like most marinaras are, and I liked that. My family enjoyed their meals as well. So much that they didn't want to share. Overall, it was a good experience. And we definitely left her a decent tip for serving us so efficiently. Kudos to her! Will I come back? This is our ABSOLUTE favorite restaurant. AND we are happy that they stayed open during COVID and made arrangements for all to be able to dine at their establishment. A must have is the Clams and Mussels appetizer....OMG !!! Can't get enough. Also the mushroom risotto, and add the shrimp if you like seafood. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. My husband and I were looking somewhere in Grass Valley to have lunch. Italian is what I was wanting and we definitely found a great place called SERGIO CAFFE!!!! What a fabulous venue. The choice of soup, salads, appetizers, pastas and main meals are mouthwatering. We started with cold watermelon guspatcho, crispy calamari ... I had the pesto pasta with chicken and my husband had pesto chicken raviolis. Good size portions that were happily tasty We finished with dessert raspberry and Greek yogurt, just scrumptious ... The materdee was one spot, helpful and very courteous. The cooks are terrific! All in all I've found our happy Italian place!!!! My wife and I celebrated our 52nd wedding anniversary at Sergio's last night. The food and service were excellent, but the experience was marred by our inability to carry on a conversation without yelling. The problem was the faux Vegas lounge act that greeted us as we entered the restaurant. While they were good at what they do, they were entirely too loud for such a small venue that was crowded anyway. The lounge act should be held until 9 p.m. for the bar scene, assuming they have one. After all, the ability to converse in a civilized manner is part of a pleasant dining experience. read more

We live in Grass Valley and have loved going to Sergio's since we moved here 5 years ago. But in the last year, they have really changed. We made two reservations both in December and both times we were met by a blonde rude hostess and neither reservation was kept. The first time, the blonde slammed tables together to accommodate us. The second time, this same blonde said that she could ask their friends to move. I declined and said we would wait for the lady with the dog and one glass of wine to leave, needless to say this lady was so rude knowing we were waiting she just sat there. She finally left and my family and I decided to go to MARIE'S and eat. Best decision ever. Needless to say, I will not eat there again nor will the many guests who visit me. read more

My wife and I have been to Sergio's more than one time. To be truthful I have to say I find the food average nothing super great. But I really appreciate the fact that Sergios doesn't kowtow to unconstitutional or illegal mandates are orders by government officials who have no authority to give them. Many of the comments that you will read from customers who call Sergio anti-mask her or unsanitary food handlers in the back are simply ignorant about the virus and how it works. You don't get it from eating food you get it from breathing the air. Masks have been shown to be ineffective. And likewise the vaccinated not only get the virus but spread it quite readily. The next time we are in grass Valley we will of course go to Sergio's and support them. There's nothing worse than a person running a business who has to put up with the imbeciles who you know nothing about science and make the most ridiculous remarks regarding unconstitutional orders from the government. Took advantage of a Sergio's curbside pickup tonight. I'll admit, the takeout chicken marsala could not compare to the dining in version. But, it was great to have some good, local restaurant food! And, let's get real... our local businesses need our support more than ever. I asked Sergio if he considered a delivery service like Door dash, but they take 20%. If you love tri-tip then visit Sergio's for their Tri-tip salad! It is delicious! Go with the dressing they put on for the best taste. Also, they have the best Chocolate Mousse I've ever had.
