We celebrated my in-laws' 51st wedding anniversary by having lunch here. It's located in Historic Downtown Grass Valley. I think it's in the perfect location because of the beautiful scenery. The only downfall is that the parking can be very challenging. It's a small, intimate restaurant. They do however have outdoor dining as well. Our service was good, but it would have been nice to have been checked on more frequently. I ordered the Shrimp Pasta which was from their lunch specials. The portions are big. I had a hard time finishing my food but then again, I don't really eat much....lol. Chocolate Mousse was the choice for dessert. I was surprised that they did not offer Cannoli.....bummer! This used to be my favorite italian restaurant in Grass Valley. Unfortunately had a terrible experience today..march 15th..see receipt. I have dined here for years and the food was always consistent. Last time i was here was about 6 months ago. Today was terrible...i got the salmon salad ( split plate with my boyfriend) which is what i always order for lunch. The salmon tasted fishy and undercooked. If you look at my previous reviews you will see the portions are a third of what they used to be and they use standard tomatoes instead of the tasty grape tomatoes. I only took 1 bite and knew it did not taste right. I had the server bring it back to cook the tiny piece of salmon. Still awful. We both did not eat our meal and yet she still charged us for inedible food. No suggestion of replacing it with something else. 43 bucks. She boxed it up and we through it in the trash. I know the owners and they are nice but the quality of food has gone down. Plus the salmon dish went up from 19 bucks to 21 bucks (inflation). I hope they can bring the place back to its original glory. It was not crowded at all for a Friday ( normally packed ). They had long term wonderful servers and cooks...did not see them today. We have been coming here for over 3 years now and last night we were there for Mother's Day celebration. We were not disappointed. Favi and all staff are awesome in doing their jobs. It's a busy night but we know the food will be great! And again we we're not disappointed! The Surf and Turf dinner special was really delicious. Had a lovely dinner with the very attentive staff here. I wanted a table in the shade for my poodle to be comfortable. Our server found one while telling us the specials. I had the lamb chop special, which was fantastic. Chop cooked exactly as I ordered. They were on top of fluffy mashed potatoes also topped with potato chips. Food is really good but service not so great. My family and I have been here many times and usually the service is sufficient. But the most recent visit, the waitress served our food and chatted with another waitress the rest of the time. No one checked on us once until of course it was time to pay. I took my fiancee here tonight, February 22. My fiancee and I ordered our meals and such, no biggie. The waitress brought us our food like they would normally do. The bacon wrapped sea bass I ordered was very good, the tri-tip salad my fiancee ordered was good but nothing special. This is actually not why I am on here. The reason I am on here is this, the service after the food was brought to us was absolutely horrible. Our waitress showed up to the table once to ask about the meal. We spent a bit of time there enjoying our meals. Understand something those of you reading this, I am a big tipper, even when going to IHOP. Our waitress was scarce, didn't once come by the table to see if we needed/wanted even a refill on water. My own opinion: a waiter or a waitress gets their hourly pay up to the point of bringing the food to the table. The tip itself is based on the actions, or lack thereof, of the waiter/waitress. Even at IHOP or any such place that may be categorized as such, I often tip well because of the hospitality shown by our server. On the receipt I specified that I was not leaving a tip due to the poor hospitality shown and that I was more than willing to talk to whomever wanted to know why. Not surprisingly so, my fiancee and I left and when we walked outside and turned around, we looked inside and saw the waitress showing another server the receipt and laughing as if there was something funny instead of possibly asking us why we were dissatisfied with the service. Unknowingly to this waitress she still had an opportunity to make a little extra money if acting like an adult and taking that energy to speak with us instead of acting like a child to get justification for her actions or more accurately put, lack thereof. read more

Sergios is a nice spit for affordable, delicious italian food. Everything is beautiful presented with friendly service. We started with the fruit and cheese plate and the caprese salad. The caprese salad was excellent, with fresh ingredients and balsamic vinegar. The cheese plate was pretty good, I wish there was more variety in the fruit and that the raspberry glaze didn't cover everything, but the brie, chevre, and candied pecans were fabulous. I split the spinach and ricotta ravioli, so what you see here are half portions. The pasta dough tasted amazing, conveying the flavors of fresh handmade pasta. The basil in the pesto was great too. Unfortunately the ravioli didn't really have any filling, and the pesto was mostly oil, but overall still good. I tried the panna cotta and it was undoubtedly the best I've ever had. The cream was light and sweet and went amazingly with the tart raspberry sauce. Overall a very nice experience whether you go as a couple or with a family. read more

I had the lasagna with bolognese and béchamel sauce, served with locally sourced grilled vegetables. The food was so delicious, and the staff was very friendly. My mom and I just decided to stop in one afternoon and we were seated right away, the inside has a very pleasant calming vibe to it. Once we looked over the menu the waitress came over and took our order and was very nice, she put our order in and the food came out fairly quickly, and it was amazing, everything tasted very fresh and it was very tasty. Have never had a bad meal at Sergio's before last night. I ordered the ravioli with pesto sauce. The sauce was not the creamy style, that's OK, but it was very dry as it appeared there was barely any olive oil. There was no sign of garlic or pine nuts. We ordered vegetable soup, and clams and muscles for an appetizer. They each had great flavor- especially the clams and muscles. For a main course I got the shrimp salad which was like a shrimp Louie salad. It was delicious except for the fact that they didn't devein the shrimp. If it wasn't for this, it would be 5 stars. My son had the seafood risotto which also didn't have the shrimp deveined, but besides that it was delicious- better flavor than food that we've eaten in Italy. The servers were nice too. As a first-generation Italian I usually don't take restaurant referrals seriously--especially from my American friends! It's not that I respect their reviews, it's just that most Americans use Olive Garden as their gold standard . That said, me and my wife have tried almost every Italian restaurant in the Grass Valley / Auburn areas. I refuse to say a word about them (except for La Gastronomia, which is also excellent), mainly because I don't consider "Chef Boyardee" a culinary experience. Anyhow it was Monday and many restaurants were closed, so me and my wife reluctantly decided to try Sergio's. We were immediately greeted by the waiter, Tyler it was great. He made recommendations and I went with their cioppino (being originally from San Francisco it's my go-to barometer). My wife is a vegetarian so that's always a tough to crack.Long story, short what's up Pino in the was excellent. I was blown away. The sauce had the perfect amount of seasoning and spiciness with a touch of cream and the fish, scallops and shrimp was perfect! My wife had a Caprese salad and veggie Caesar salad, which she also loved. Sergio's is at the top of my local recommendation list thus far and I hope you try it! For me it meant that they are far far away to understand the meaning of the cut for steak and the way that they should cook the steak. Not about the restaurant per se but: Come to Grass Valley on Thursday during five summer weeks of street festival! A dozen different musicians, farmers market, crafts, face-painting, preening teenagers -- the whole kit and kaboodle shoehorned into the several blocks of downtown. Great fun. See pics for the excellent Dean Martin sing-alike who entertained throughout our dinner outdoors. Server was awkward and not particularly knowledgeable. Perhaps Dean's singing distracted her. If not, I would be careful to order straight off the menu and not have culinary questions. We asked for calamari instead of chicken on the cobb salad. That is what we got -- along with a charge for a full calamari appetizer ($13?!). Definitely out of line. Especially given the smaller-than-appetizer serving. By comparison, if we had added normally pricey fresh salmon, it would have only been an additional $9 (adding salmon was on the menu, but not calamari). On the other hand, the calamari was fresh, hot and done just right ('cept, oddly, the overdone tentacles). The rest of the salad was good, with generous gorgonzola and avo. The blue cheese "dressing" was runny, any blue cheese more a faint suggestion than a statement. But with the pleasing surfeit of gorgonzola, I wouldn't take any points off for the dressing. The wild mushroom risotto was to die for. Smooth, creamy, earthy, rich. If had every day, it probably would kill you. But whatta way to go. We have been to Sergio's several times over the years and give a general 4 star rating. Today my husband's BLT was very good. This review is for one item on the menu, Crab Cakes. The crust was overcooked, almost burnt. The insides were mushy and very likely made with canned crab, although there was no real crab flavor. They were served lukewarm. The sauce on the side was very tasty. I write this review in hopes the chef sees the rating and will improve the cakes or take them off the menu. read more

We have dined here numerous times over past few years with varied quality of service. We made a reservation for two and requested an inside window table. When we arrived they tried to seat us elsewhere and I mentioned the reservation for a window table. Our table was still being used by other patrons, so we the host apologized and offered us a seat at the bar. We grabbed our seats at the bar, but had to grab someone's attention to get a drink at the bar. Things improved greatly after the initial hiccup. My wife ordered her favorite dish, gnocchis and I got fettuccine Alfredo with salmon. We split the apple salad and enjoyed the garlic bread. Our dinners were very good. My salmon was good, I'd prefer they didn't just last the filet, skin and all, on top of the fettuccini...Maybe grill the fish then pull the skin and slice into cubes. I really liked this place a lot, oh goodness. They start you off with garlic bread rather than just rolls. Which was a great touch. Our dinner was really good. I had chicken marseille which was absolutely lovely. They made it fresh and without onions. My wife had the halibut, and it was well cooked, not too much. The pecan crust was a nice touch. The best part was that I had unlimited Arnold Palmers for $2.50. That replaces the $4 salad add-on which I thought was a bit much. A bit upscale but the food matches the price. I was munching at Sergio's the other night and got the ciopinno, my mother got the swordfish special. The ciopinno was mildly disappointing as the calamari in it was extremely chewy and the salmon had bits of skin and fat on it.
