There were plenty of people waiting to get on the tracks with luggage, like us, so be aware it might get a little crowded. We didn't think it was that bad though. Out stop was the last one, about an hour and 15 minutes to Sorrento from Naples and the train cleared out quite a bit as we went along. There are plenty of locals taking this train, so it's not expensive at all. The trip from Naples to Sorrento was under 10 euro. Much better than a cab or car at 150 euro. There are a lot of panhandlers. There was one particular guy that was on every single time we were on the train, playing Despacito, and driving me mad but luckily it lasts maybe 10 min for the most part.

If…read moreyou are arriving from a long distance train on TrenItalia, after getting off at Napoli Centrale, walk towards the Napoli Plaza Garibaldi direction. The Circumvesuviana is at the lower levels of the station. The ticket can be directly purchased from the ticket window. Be aware of your surroundings, as there are many shady characters around. There is good police presence, but still one has to be careful. There are about 19 stations before the train stops at Pompeii Scavi and it takes 35 minutes or so. The entrance to the ruins are just to the right of the station and very convenient. On the return, make sure you have tickets for the Circumvesuviana, which can only be purchased from the ticket window. There is an express train to Naples, which does not honor the circumvesuviana tickets. This train has a conductor that checks the tickets on entry.

It's a proper full size city bus and it runs on schedule. I was able to follow the very good signage in the airport and then the marked walking route to the bus stop. On boarding, the drive accepted €5 for the fare using my card as he did not have enough change to break the €50 I got from the airport ATM. There are seats and luggage storage but the bus was full enough that I was standing at the back with my rollaboard. Ten or so minutes later, the bus made its one and only stop outside the train station. Super easy, super convenience. I'm not sure if there's still a discount for purchasing online as Lissa mentions in her 2015 review. As I won't be using the bus for the return, I didn't check. In the Central Train Station, you can buy a ticket at any newspaper or convenience store if you ask the cashier for an Alibus ticket. (In the airport, I imagine it would be the same but I don't know for sure). However, the extra euro probably won't kill you! It's also significantly cheaper than taking a taxi! The busses pick up and drop off on the "end of the square," which was covered in construction for us, so we couldn't see it from the train station. Just keep walking, you can't miss the 10 busses waiting to pick people up. (City busses, not the kind that you store your luggage underneath) The Alibus was labeled like any other bus route, and you had to hold your luggage with you-- possibly standing for the whole ride. No worries, it's only about 15 minutes. They drop off within comfortable walking distance to the airport, but you do have to drag your luggage for a good 5 minutes outside. Very easy system. Not first class quality but great for the price!

Today in Napoli, I'm at the crown jewel of the Naples metro "art stations." Nominated as one of the most beautiful transit stations in Europe, Toledo is built on multiple layers which the color scheme designed to reflect some part of the city. Rainbow Limos was highly recommended by a friend and prices seemed quite comparable to other private transport. They picked us up at the Naples train station and drove us to Positano with a stop for a prearranged private tour (that they set up) of Pompeii, then at the end of our stay picked us up at our hotel and took us to Naples airport. If you have the budget I would highly recommend the guided Pompeii tour - I think we got a lot more out of it than if we had been wandering around on our own. They were efficient in communication ahead of time, very clear on details and prices via email, on time/ahead of time for pick ups, and we felt very safe with them. They were extremely kind when our train from Rome was delayed and helped make sure our private Pompeii tour could still happen. Would absolutely use them again!
