a plate of food and a bowl of salad
    Andrew L.

It's a shame that sep lai does not have more reviews! It was my first time having laotian food, many of the dishes and flavours were reminiscent of Thai cuisine. It's a fun spot to order many different plates and share. We had the kua mee (pad thai), khao poon (soup noodle), calamari and mango salad. The pad thai was so fresh, garnished with bean sprouts, veggies and peanuts! The fried egg was a nice touch and the flavours were balanced. The khao poon was a bit mild on the flavour. But the curry flavours were tasty. The shrimps were quite small, I've never seen anything like it! The calamari was excellent, one of the faves of the night. The fried basil and tomato/pineapple mixture paired so well. Finally the mango salad was refreshing, crunchy, sweet and sour. Great way to start the meal! The ambeience was lovely, please ask to sit on the terasse. You're surrounded by plants and string lights.. an unbelievably cozy experience.

This resto is adorable and has such a chill and cozy vibe. Laos food is delicious and I've never had it before. Very similar to Thai, but it has its little differences in spices and preparation. I reserved for two and we got a nice place at their bar, which is looking out at the window. It's not a great view, but you go for the food and company. It was my birthday, so we each got the Soup Khao Poon as an entrée which is a good move because the repas size is gigantic. We also got the Boulettes Veggie/ Gluten free, some hot Jasmine tea and the mini pandan crēme brûlée. They have many dishes they can do gluten free and vegetarian. The waitress told me their brownie was gluten free but probably not dairy free.

The picture of burger was not nice but the taste was opposite. There is papaya slices and basil which was new to me. I like this dish the best and it is inexpensive. The pad Thai was also tasty with lemon zest. There was plenty of roasted peanuts which I like a lot. The chicken bowl was OK, meat quality was good but the flavour has no surprises, unlike the other two. I usually only order delivery from my visited restaurants. Nice experience to try a new restaurant via delivery app.

I loved the decor of Thip thip, I am not familiar with the cultural dishes from Laos but the Khao Poon appealed to me. A Laotian soup dish -11$. Served with vermicelli in a rich coconut broth with lemon grass, fried tofu, pickled mushrooms, green onions, bamboo shoots. I originally didn't ask for chicken but it came with when I got the dish which was an extra 4$. I didn't like the presentation of the boiled chicken legs, they weren't properly cooked for me. Without it, the dish was stellar. If you're a fan of curry, you'll enjoy this dish with more fragrant notes. I am still down to try other dishes in the near future.

Management in the restaurant was arrogant and offensive. On top of everything the $23.00 pho was the worst pho I have ever tasted. The worst part: I emailed the buisiness to offer them my grievance. They requested I detail my poor experiences by email, which I did and they then completely ignored me (i received no responce). Poor Management. Terrible food that is overpriced. The drinks are fancy and nice, but there are better spots close by.

My absolute favorites were the spicy beef tataki salad and the pork buns (you could see both in my pictures), and I'll most likely order both next time I go. I also liked the shiso leaf appetizer and the pork imperial rolls, but I wasn't as crazy about them. The service was great too. All of the things our waitress suggested we liked. My only critique is the price. For the price that you pay, I find the portions to be small and it is very easy to rack up a big bill, especially if you are hungry. I would have easily rated this restaurant 5 stars if the prices were a little cheaper or the portions a little bigger.
