Some of the frequenters of this cafe might be annoyed to find it has become so popular, but this…read morerestaurant totally merits being packed from opening to closing. You may wish to make a reservation because this tiny cafe has but a few tables and it gets pretty busy. Take out would also be a suggestion. This gem of an eatery offers traditional Colombian savory fare such as arepas (ground white corn flour "bread/tortilla" that is stuffed with various ingredients), patacones (plantains stuffed with various ingredients) as well as tropical juices/smoothies, Columbian coffee drinks and some of the most to die-for pastries. One of my Columbian friends suggested we eat here and I'm so glad she did. I ordered the Arepa con carne, which was a generous portion of shredded beef, sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, and cheese. It was huge-I had to use both hands to hold it (not a complaint-just glad I didn't get more than one!!). They serve the arepas with bottles for the table of a freshly made avocado cream sauce and a slightly spicy vinegar sauce that reminds me of Cholula brand Mexican table sauce. You add the sauces to your arepa, take a bite, add more sauce. The beef filling was very tender and delicious and the sauces added a really nice flavor to the dish. The arepa itself was freshly made and cooked-it was still nice and hot when it came to the table. I ordered the Guanabana Smoothie with no added sugar and water versus milk, as my friend suggested. Guanabana is also known as Soursop and many people think it's a great cancer fighter. It tastes like a combo of banana and coconut-in other words, it was very good and smooth. For dessert, she recommended we get the Pastel Gloria instead of Churros, since I've had my lifetime share of Churros before. Her suggestion was another hit. These delicate puff pastries are filled with a homemade dulce de leche and a guava paste. The combination was out of this world and it was the creamiest, most delicately flavored dulce de leche I have ever tasted. These too were popped fresh out of the oven when served. My friend told me that she comes here often when she is feeling homesick. She said the owner opened it initially as a Columbian bakery, but people were inquiring about more savory fare, so he decided to do that as well. I can see why she loves it so much-the food is reasonably priced, authentic and is clearly made with fresh ingredients and to order. I would definitely come here often if I lived still in QC. It's worth the trip into Limoilou/Beauport.

We didn't have a reservation, but the friendly staff immediately accommodated us. We ordered the beef nachos to share. We were expecting carne asada similar to what we're used to back home, but it was more of a shredded beef style. Even so, we were pleasantly surprised--it still hit the spot, especially in the context of missing home flavors. They also provided three unique spicy sauces, which added a nice variety to the dish. Overall, we were glad we stopped in and had a satisfying experience.

Most of my other saved destinations were only open for dinner. Sat in the patio. I enjoyed everything which came with the tacos. A vibrant salad and excellent garnishes. Pickled onions, crema, and two accompanying salsas on top of the store bought varieties. I likes the mango and smoked chipotle together. Sadly the tacos have four options but for the plate you only get one choice. I enjoyed my dish but the only thing to improve were some of the meat was a tad dry, but the salsas bolstered the flavor.

I discovered this nice little restaurant/Mexican food supplies shop a little hidden behind a gas station. It was mid-afternoon Saturday and there were no other customers in the restaurant initially. I sat down and was soon greeted by a very friendly man who apologized that because their main cook was away today, they could only serve tacos. I didn't see that as a problem, as tacos were exactly what I was craving. He offered me jamaica to drink and the choice of about four types of tacos. I had two chorizo and two carnitas. They soon arrived accompanied by bowls of chopped onions, cilantro with green onion, lime wedges, and a dark rich red sauce. There was also a small cup of habanero sauce he said was for the carnitas, but placed on the side in case it was too hot for me. Everything was delicious, and both sauces were delicious, and not too hot for me (YMMV, I like things spicy). During my lunch several people came to buy supplies and another group of about six was seated. After my lunch, I explored the store. It has a good selection of canned and dried goods, a cooler section for drinks and some perishables, and a meat cooler as well. They also had a large section of Mexican candy. I picked up some dried peppers. I was talking to the man as I settled my bill, and I completely forgot to leave a tip. I wasn't prompted on the credit card keypad to leave one. I remembered hours later and I am so annoyed at myself. I have to go back now for two reasons: to pay my tip for good food and good service, and to explore more of the menu. Looking forward to it.
