While it seems to be normal for caregiver turnover (especially during the Covid years), the vast majority of those caregivers were gentle, loving and genuinely loved what they do. We all made many friends of the staff, even the kitchen staff and med techs. The facility is well maintained, clean, attractive and orderly at all times. The setting up on a hill in the Sierra Foothills in north Auburn is wonderful and quite convenient and easily reached just off I80 and State Highway 49 in the California Gold Country. The rooms are either private or semi-private, so residents can feel independent Many of the administration staff were also very kind. The housekeeping director and staff were very responsive and nice. Even the maintenance staff were so helpful and compassionate. The activities director labors tirelessly to provide many enrichment activities for the residents. The receptionists are also very nice. Even the business manager is very compassionate and she attended mom's Celebration of Life. We were very appreciative of that. While expensive as it is everywhere, our mom's experience was quite good. Many staff expressed their love for our mom to us after she passed away. We were very touched by them all. Our family recommends Oakwood Village for senior care.

This was the absolute best decision of my life. The quality of care, communication between staff, friendships of staff & residents, the food, activities Belhave Estates is by far the highest quality care available in Northern CA. At the beginning of November he had a stroke and spends 21 days in re-hab center in Vallejo. On December 3, he gets released to come home. We hired 24 hour care at an exorbitant amount of money and it was not that helpful and awkward having someone in your house 24/7. His physical abilities were declining and we were forced to start looking for an elder care facility. We looked for almost three weeks before finding Belhaven with Monica and Dan. They came to our home to save us a trip. Upon explaining the services they offered, talking to Dennis about what he wanted for care and making both he and I feel comfortable with this horrible decision we made arrangements to move him. Dennis who was only 68 years old when he moved to Belhaven. At the time he was the only man living in the back house and was treated like a king. Not once did I ever regret our decision. All his needs were met by the staff with smiles, humor, compassion, empathy and tenderness. As his physical limitations worsened, his ability to communicate was starting to fail and still they all went beyond my expectations. I probably should mention he entered BelHaven the day the world shut down for COVID. Dennis passed peacefully in August 2020. Thank you Monica and Dan for taking such great care of the love of my life.

The Neighborhood Center of the Arts is housed in what I'm guessing is an old hospital. Or a…read moresanitarium. It looks old and crazy, stale and, to use the parlance of fast food, melty. If it had teeth then they'd be about to drop off onto your head. The center has a wing on the far end (I don't know what other parts of the building are used for, but I've heard there's a glass studio). It's upstairs, and you can either take the stairs or the elevator. At the base of the stairs you'll see a series of totemic ceramics. Art lies ahead. The center is an expansive working art studio, as well as an open art gallery. The aim is to provide resources and art classes for adults with developmental disabilities. They work in many different mediums, including paint, photography, ceramics, weaving, computers, and pen and ink. Further information can be found on their website. They have a new exhibit every few months. Hours are 10am to 4pm. Until about 2pm the studio is active, with artists working, milling about, and attending classes. But visitors are free to step in and check out what's going on. Basically, this is my favorite gallery in the world. It's such a positive place, free of pretentions, and the work is great and presented well. The staff is very friendly, and the artists are nice and available to speak about their work. I (and my family) have a whole collection of art from here. Some of my favorite pieces that I own are from here. Once you walk inside, there are a few rooms walling the latest exhibition. Past that you get into the studio areas, where there is also more art to look at. Basically, every room has art on the walls. One time I was browsing some abstract religious icon paintings, and one of the artists came up to me and asked, "Hey, do you want to know what happened yesterday?" I said, "Yes." And he handed me the newspaper. Then walked off. Then I bought a piece of art -- a woodblock with an all-text Volvo advertisement printed on it, and sprawling on top of the text, in various mediums, are words and nonsense. My family and I recently invested in a huge painting, a collaborate effort by a few of the artists. It looks somewhat like a Basquiat. I highly recommend visiting the Neighborhood Center of the Arts. The artists produce amazing work, and it's very accessible, engaging, and enjoyable. The center does a wonderful job at cultivating their talents. A lot of care and hard work goes into the place, and their efforts are rightfully deserving of praise.
