Bought 134.00 of gas, went in to use the bathroom and buy a couple candy bars. Went to check out…read moreand realized I needed to spend 10.00 to use my credit cards I look in my purse for cash, the attendant asked if I was buying gas... ( as if using the bathroom was going to cost me 7.16, I replied yes my husband was filling up my car. Drove away and thought it was an odd conversation. We headed to the state park to see the falls. BUT the story doesn't end there... on our way back we bought a post card and snacks. Again thought we would use the bathrooms before we left the town the attendant watch me knock on the door repeatedly and said nothing... my husband knocked on the men's room and no answer both doors locked. We left and went across the street to the post office to mail the postcard, came back my husband walked in to use the bathroom thinking who ever was done he confronted the attendant and asked why the doors are locked.. "I just cleaned them" she replied she had locked the bathroom an hour before close and refused to unlock the doors. Totally RUDE, Nasty we spent 150.00 gas and snacks to be refused a bathroom

Think Sam Druker from the General Store in Green Acres, and I kid you not... the theme music from the Beverly Hillbillies was playing in the store! (You young Yelpers... look it up!). I stopped here to get a few gallons because I wasn't sure how far it would be until the next gas station. It literally looks like one of those roadside stands that sells local product, but it had a pump, so I stoped in. The pump said no credit, cash only and you had to pay ahead of time. I went in and said I'll take $10, and handed him a $20. The pumps are old time, so I wasn't used to numbers actually spinning as I pumped. Of course, I went over $10, so I just went for $20. I eventually ended on $20.10. Went back in to tell him I went over the $10, and he said "by how much, we are on the honor system here"! I paid him 10 cents! Before we left, he gave me a Yooper Jigsaw Puzzle" which was a small bag of saw dust. Lol And he gave my wife a small bag that contained a marble (in case you lose your marbles), and candy kiss (to remind you that someone loves you), a penny (so you will never be broke), an eraser (to make your mistakes disappear), a string (to help hold things together) and a rubber band (to stretch yourself to your limits). Listen.... If you are ever are traveling through the north woods of Upper Michigan, you NEED to stop here and check this place out! Nice to see a place like this is still around!

They only sell their beer in the U.P. and N. Wisconsin. This station had not only the common varieties, such as the delicious UPA, but the special limited editions as well (one with 10.1% alcohol). I wish I had bought them here, as the Holiday in St. Ignace had no limited editions just UPA and Lager.

I haven't reviewed Gustafson's?…read more Giving credit where credit is due, this was another Jane & Michael Stern find from the 2005 update of their classic book Roadfood. Man, do your remember travel books? If you find one in a used book store, pick it up. The classics stay classic. And speaking of the classics, Gustafson's is the real deal. Roadside gas station with a handful of smokers to transform the bounty of the great lakes into delicious succulent morsels of delight. If you don't know, I have what I affectionately call a fat-tooth. And the fish that swim in those frigid fresh water lakes develop such beautiful and silky fat. The lake trout especially! Gustafson's isn't fancy. Walking in the door you may ask yourself, "This is it?". But when you tear open your pouch of smoked lake trout, and pull the meat off the bones with your fingers, with a little of that fat dripping down your arm and chin, you'll say to yourself, "Yeah, this is it." This is a required stop anytime I'm up in the UP. Last visit they were out of the whitefish, but so it goes. And looking back on the listing in Roadfood, the Sterns mentioned seeing smoked menominee in the case, but I've never noticed it before. I'll have to ask next time I'm up. Sure, you can get the salmon. I imagine it's delicious. The Gustafson's crew are great at smoking and salmon takes smoke well. But I say go for the local stuff. Get out of your comfort zone and buy a whole whitefish. Don't fret about heads and bones. Don't worry that you won't finish it (there is a bunch of negative space inside, they aren't as big as they look). You've got this. I believe in you!
