Senate Square
This is the main square of Helsinki. It's a big, wide open space where you can hang out and take in the scenery. On one side of the square, you'll see the huge Helsinki Cathedral. It's a gigantic white church up on top of a large steep staircase. On the other side, there's the Finland Senatorial House. It's set up like a Zocalo with the church on one side, and the governmental offices on another.
The center of the square features a large statue of Alexander II, the noble, and much adored Russian Czar who once ruled over Finland. It's a fantastic centerpiece to the square.
At the end of the square, you'll find public transportation options, with bus and streetcar stops. There's a lot of history around here, with plenty of museums in the area. It's located right off the waterfront, a block away from the market. read more
