This review is probably unique because I am the patient. This is my firsthand account. I came to this hospital very sick. I was at JFK, where I coded and was on many machines. I had issues with my breathing and I was too weak to work with therapy. I came to Select to get better. While I was here I had a respiratory crisis and needing a tracheostomy and a ventilator. I had to be seen by doctors everyday and taken care of in the ICU for a couple of weeks. Little by little I began to improve and breath more on my own. I started working with physical, occupational and speech therapy. It took a couple of months and this place helped me get back to my life. I am able to walk, talk and eat on my own again. I get to home now and I am thankful for that. There are so many people I want to thank for making a difference in my stay. Almost all the nurses were fantastic. Kelly & Katie made me feel like I was a family member and Demi, Magdal and Daphnee were always on point. The respiratory therapists helped me to get back to breathing.... Terrill and Phillippe were some of my favorite RTs. Eddie In Physical therapy helped me to get up walking again. It became a routine to get coffee myself with PT once I was walking... fyi, Sarah Makes the Best coffee. There are so many other people who made an impact on my stay that I am thankful for. lost my father because of the negligence of the staff at Select Specialty Hospital. He went in talking, alert, and recovering from diverticulitis surgery -- only needing help learning to manage his wound vac and ostomy bag. On Mother's Day, I walked in to find him gasping for air. The nurse told me "he's fine, he's been like that for two hours." He was not fine -- he was in respiratory distress and ultimately suffered an anoxic brain injury that led to his death. My sister, an ER nurse 1,800 miles away, had to direct the code team through FaceTime because they didn't know what to do. The hospital later altered records 17 times after the incident. There was no accountability because Florida's "Free Kill Law" prevents families from suing if their parent is unmarried or has no dependents. Please think twice before trusting this facility with your loved one -- what happened to my father should never happen to anyone. read more

For people who may be faced with a case worker from pbg medical, whose loved one has a tracheotomy in, and are only given Kindred as an option.... This is for you. The comparison between kindred and Select- Kindred is dirty, dingy, dark, and the nurses have too many patients. Basic care needs are neglected. Hygiene is neglected. Suctioning the trach is NEGLECTED. My dad who has since passed, went to kindred after pbg icu bc the case worker gave it to my family as the only after care rehabilitation facility who takes trach patients. We learned the hard way... my dad had to go back to pbg emergency room. This is when one of the ER Dr's told me my dads trach hadn't been suctioned & kindred left little plastic pieces at the bottom of my dads trach on top of not being suctioned. My dad had ending stages of copd. Upon discharge from pbg icu AGAIN, I was met w their only case worker Carol. When Carol thought she was just going to have me sign my dads life away and he done with it, as she was insisting he's going back to kindred, and I said "absolutely not", Carol got defensive, & we had to go walk to the chapel to talk further. But an icu nurse at pbg medical overheard me tell Carol I refused to send my dad back, and she pulled me aside and said "look, I work part time at select. It's not a 5 star, but... it's much better than kindred, ask for select"... so grateful for this angel. I hugged her so tight. Then I went to speak w Carol. I had to fight this woman and the hospital for them to start new transfer paperwork for select as opposed to kindred. Thank GOD we did this. Because my dad did come out of select. And I truly believe we would have lost him at kindred. It's not 5 star. And I've read about a lazy speech therapist in the 1 star reviews for select. But let me tell you, I wonder if any of those people had gone to kindred, bc if they had, I doubt they would give a shit about a lazy speech therapist. It would be the least of my worries. Just get my loved one back home. We will deal w everything we can from home, but... it's a much better option than kindred. So please, if you are reading this, and you are told your loved can only go to kindred, fight it and request select. I wish there were more options, and I wish there were an acute care facility w GOOD reviews, and not so much of a workload of these nurses that your loved one is neglected. And I'm not saying Select is perfect by any means. I am saying, of the 2, go here. At least you can get your loved one home. I can't say that you will by sending your loved one to kindred. read more

Worst recovery hospital ever. The night nurses don't give a crap about. You can ring the call button all you want and will not allow you to use. The bathroom. They are nice to your loved ones but you as a patient. They stole from me while I was on mort as I knew what I Had in my bag and the night nurses are very rude. My favorite hospital is Bethesda East or west in Palm Beach but they are not a recovery hospital so I was transferred to Select. A nightmare. read more

This is not a facility for your loved one. It was difficult making a decision between two facilities but the reason we chose Select was 1) his cardiac MDs rounds there 2) they have a 24 hour on-site physician. Neither were true, The vast majority of bed side care providers are indifferent, refuse or ignore repeated calls for care and directly contribute to the deterioration of your loved one by not carrying out your car plan. Many are indifferent to an adult sitting in a bowel movement for hours, despite warning they needed it and asking for a bed pan. Not once were they willing to bedpan, most often they ignored call bellscor slouched behind old-fashined computer terminals texting on phones. We ended up having family there 24/7. Attentive family are not enough to get team compliance with the care plan. Each shift pushes work off until shift change. Food would come but not be brought to patient rooms. because meds hadn't been given on time. Meds would not come for two more hours, now cold food would have sat for those hours. Even if family chased them down staff delayed Similarly, they used "condom catheters"---which don't work, fall off and the ends are just placed in a bedside men's open urinal pitcher. Despite repeated requests by patient and family to change the pitcher or deal with the condom end falling off, it could be hours before there was action. This lead to patient scolding. Getting underpads changed was even harder. Our patient was very tall but wasted and very thin. Staff when asked to raise him from sliding in the bed would refuse because he's too big. Patients were regularly scolded for things they couldn't control such as leg movements in the nite. Along with routine care, required treatments like bedsore wound cleaning and recovering were not done as required, bedsore prevention turning of patients was not done once. Our loved ones leg ended up on the bedrails at nite, lots of scolding, we put a blanket to protect his leg, the care team neglected to do the same. He left with a massive to the bone bed sore. He had severe posterior bed sores. We later learned that when the care staff ran in periodically to turn off a wall light, they were actually supposed to be turning him for bedsore prevention. Medicines would be delayed for hours. Care plan requirements for safety inflated fall protection around the beds were not complied with. When the patient did get one it was filled with mold. When it wasn't replaced the curt answer was "they all have mold." The patient's bedside family members have combined over 100 years of health care experience, much of it in long term care, we are not "just angry" family members. We KNOW they fail to meet the standard of care and their actions determine whether the patient lives or dies or fails to regain full mobility. These are just a few examples of care that had a very strong, fit golfer and world traveling man just days before his heart surgery withering to near death under their "care". After much research we transferred to another facility. If we doubted our judgement, the difference in care, the attention given to the bedsore created by lack of proper prevention at Select, down to the bone, was quicly addressed and healed. There are a few very competent team members to ackowledge. The PTs were uniformly excellent. But their successes were limited because the care team did not put the patients inchairs, or sitting positions or obolizdc the care daily as required by their care plans. There was good t wound care treatment by 1 staff person after several weeks in the facility. But it wasn't enough to turnaround the neglect of all others. And, there were two highly professional bedside care givers one each on day and nite staff. Again, not enough to counter those who slept on the nite shift, hid behind computers, shouted and reprimanded patients and family. Please do not even CONSIDER this facility. Their only people seemingly accountable for their jobs are the sales team. read more

A full 5 stars and a nice surprise after all I had been told about select. People must have been talking about the north location. The south location gives excellent care! It was quite a nice surprise. The staff goes well beyond an ordinary hospital no matter what language you speak. You will be be well taken care of by everyone! I even asked to go back there to finish up my IV antibiotics for 6 weeks. I don't think I'd be more comfortable anywhere else. I cannot say enough good things about Select and their staff. My grandfather was not given a good prognosis. LTAC was our last resort - it was either that or hospice care. Being a nurse myself I knew it was important to tour their facility despite another rehab being closer to us we went to Select- based on not only their community reputation but the cleanliness of their facility and attentiveness of their staff. My grandfather recovered and went on to live with us for many more years. I feel like I owe those extra years to Select. I was reminded of his stay recently as one of my patients daughters was deciding on the right rehab for her mom I felt it was my duty to share our experience read more

Horrible place! Very depressing. The speech therapist forced my dad to almost starve to death. He was moved to Select in Miami and they determined immediately that he could eat! the rooms are depressing. No view/sun light. They also tie town patients hands/wrists firmly to the bed. My husband was here for three weeks. They have some very professional staff in speech and physical therapy. But there are a couple of issues. First it is very difficult to get information. The lab tests post three days late and the doctors are generally in and out of the room so quickly you have to be assertive to get any information. I was told the nurses have information but never found that to be true and you have to ask. There is no one person who can give you an overview. If you are a loud squeaky wheel you can get information but it is not easy and there is a lot of passing the buck on questions. Second they are very understaffed. I had someone with my husband 100% of the time. Even with that and being active he would often lie in a dirty bed for up to an hour. Some of the nurses are very professional but many seem quite disrespectful of the patient or are trying to make do with do few resources. I moved my husband home ASAP and left with only two bottles of food for PEG and no way to get more which turned out to be a nightmare. He also went back to the hospital right after getting home with c diff infection and low potassium. He was apparently discharged with both. I honestly don't know if there are better places. Kindred In Melbourne was recommended but they do not allow anyone to stay overnight with a patient. My husband was disoriented and would have fallen getting out of bed without someone with him. Please do yourself and your loved one a favor and stay far away from Select Speciality hospital in lake worth. This place killed my father from lack of care. My dad was only here 5 months and could have lived a far longer life then he did. I am living in regret for leaving my dad in the care of this facility. He was only 64 years old and was brought to select hospital for physical therapy and awaiting a feeding tube. 3 months into being at select he went for the feeding tube and a day later apparently "vomited and aspirated in his sleep". Got a call that my dad wasn't going to make it and that he needed to be placed on a ventilator. Was transferred to ICU. Keep in mind my father was a COPD patient and already had history of aspiration and was also on medication for it. Wondering what degree the bed was at (at the time of vomiting) and wondering how long it took for a nurse to realize that he was suffering & unable to breathe. They mentioned my father being on the verge of sepsis. 2 weeks later my father had to get a tracheostomy. After a week after the trach was done, my father was transferred out of ICU and into a regular room. No more antibiotics for the "sepsis". A week later being in the regular room, they transferred my dad back to ICU due to extremely low blood pressure and high heart rate. They now claimed my dad was in septic shock. They claim to be doing every thing they could , and slowly each one of my fathers organs had failed. Kidney. Liver. On multiple visits, I found my dad in his own feces, pee on the sheets (his catheter fallen off?) and positioned horribly which he couldn't do anything about at that point because he was on the ventilator and restrained to the bed and on sedation. Which was also another problem on a day to day basis with the hand restraints (while being on a ventilator it is protocol) the nurses manager claim to have rules and ongoing discussions about the 2 finger rule and the restraints, I have pictures of my fathers wrists bleeding and sores from them being too tight, sometimes not even being able to put any fingers in at all. There are really only a hand select of good nurses at select speciality hospital but not enough to trust your loved one in their care. This was so unexpected as my dad was expecting and waiting to come home. Select hospital is not a skilled professional facility and please make sure you make the right decision for yourself or your loved one. My father came to Select after a severe bout of aspiration pneumonia, intubation and a cascade of ensuing complications. I cannot say enough about the great care and attention he received at Select. The staff was caring and attentive, despite difficult family circumstances. They updated us constantly, and with their tireless devotion to his care, he was able to be discharged and transferred to a rehab facility. Before he went there was careful planning between our family and the staff, with my dad's best interests at heart. Absolutely HORRIBLE. I would not recommend anyone to this hospital. You can push the help button all you want, nobody comes for 30-45 minutes on average. You lay in your own urine and feces and there's nothing you can do. You then develop sores and are raw on your bottom because nobody will come to help you. To make matters worse, in the middle of the night, every night, the lights come on and you hear "It's clean up time!" Off comes your hospital gown and bed sheets and then you are washed with very cold water. I have nothing good to say about this place. read more

Most of the attending nurses and Nurse Assistants are very under trained, under staffed and Uncaring about The patients. There are some gems..but few;( The Gastro Dr who attends might as well not have even attended on my Mom! He did nothing! The NA's & nurses would leave my Mom for 2 hours! Sitting in feces! She'd ring and ring & no one would come! Always problems with the proper maintenance & care & cleaning of her stomach tubes. Negligent Care! The only shining light for us there was Dr Myer!!!!!!! He is amazing! Don't go here unless you absolutely have no other choice.! read more

My Dad with cerebral damaged from heart attack, got in Select Hospital at Lakeworth, Palm Beach, Fl. He received a presidential care at all, from medical care to administrative care. ( medicare/medicaid plan ) Money is not the first at Select. Thanks to EVERYONE. So paceful clean, compasive staff, supportive doctors and nurses. read more

Select is the worse place. I don't even wish that place for my worse enemy. The staff are rude from the security guard to administration. The nurses are lazy, incompetent, rude, no customer service. They only give patients pain medication until they overdose. My family member was there for only one week and became unresponsive OD on morphine. They lied on the website about working with the family member. The CNO Melissa Brown is not answering or calling family members back about their concerns. If I could give minus one star, I would. This is the worst facility I have had the misfortune of dealing with. Due to my Mother's insurance and condition, I only had a choice of four places to put her in for long term care after our hospital release. Ina, who was the liason between the hospital my Mother was in and Select was very kind and we went to visit. (note, after all the horror we endured, Ina did nothing, and I never met her the entire time we were there) Arlene lured us in during our initial tour with promises of as much PT as she could tolerate and the 1:6 nurse patient ratio. I knew the first day we arrived, it would be a nightmare. Rachel who was the charge nurse was nasty as nasty can be. She would not allow my mother to go to the bathroom or even get out of bed. Her reasoning was that she had no proof my mother was ambulatory. Her attitude was so horrendous I wanted to leave the next day. I called my liason Ina, who promised me things would get better and put me in touch with Melissa, the head nurse. Melissa also made me tons of false promises. The 1:6 ratio is a joke - I can attest that nurses NEVER came to take care of my mother. She would ring for nurses to help her to the bathroom all night long, no one ever came. And I mean NEVER. I wound up hiring private aides to stay with her every evening. I truly was scared for her safety. The mistakes they made were too numerous to mention. They stopped her antibiotic for no reason and the CEO, Larry Melby, who Made me a million promises as well after my first complaint, then completely lied to my face and told me that "GOOGLE" says it is wrong to be on an antibiotic for so long. WHAT? This antibiotic was prescribed to her until 9/3 and it wound up that the drug actually just "FELL OFF" their computer system, so it was just a huge ERROR on their end that Larry Melby told me was done on purpose for my Mothers health. My Mother got extremely ill there and no one thought anything was wrong. My sister took her out AMA - and told me that the nurses there ripped off the dressings on my mothers port and did several other illegal things. We immediately brought her back to another hospital where she got better in a matter of a day. My focus now is getting her better, but when I have time, I will be taking this matter as high as I can - this fake hospital should NOT BE in business at all. No one here is qualified, caring, or professional from the CEO to the charge nurse to the liason to the nurses on down. If you love your family or person you are caring for, DO NOT BRING THEM HERE. My father was admitted to Select in 2014 after suffering a brain trauma and I could not be more grateful for the care he received. Overall, it was an excellent experience. We found the staff to be very attentive, extremely knowledgeable, warm bedside manners and proactive in his care. They went above and beyond the call of duty during a very difficult and stressful time which we greatly appreciated. I would not hesitate to recommend this facility and am shocked to see the negative reviews but I give this facility and staff five stars. read more

This place is unbelievable. They kept my boyfriend handcuffed to the bed for about 6 weeks until he developed pneumonia. Then kept him sedated with seroquel to the point of non responsive drooling. Never met a doctor over the entire 6 months and one of the two nurse practitioners that I did meet was hostile and in a hurry. Don't try to ask for a second opinion or they will do all they can to keep you away. This place is dangerous and in it for only the money. No access to imaging so they say it isn't necessary. No neurologists, no psychiatrists. Their "team" consists of a doctor who reviews charts and doesn't see patients and nurse practitioners who rotate and don't have clear pictures of prognosis. STAY AWAY. Bad enough that I turned them into the state. The nurse Jeanie lied to my boyfriend's father after confusing him with another patient. They did nothing to correct this so now he is all alone with no visitors. read more

The discharge planner was worse than nobody at all. They offer nothing to assist in locating another facility for further care. They didn't even offer me a phone book! The "discharge planner" documented that I was independent when the PT dept. stated I needed assistance. She told me that she would discharge me to the street after she failed to bully my elderly mother into taking me in. I despise this hospital and heartily recommend that it be avoided AT ALL COST! read more

The nurses and staff are great here, they have been taking very good care of my Aunt, who was told she wasn't going to make it from another hospital. We successfully survived Select, which was a feat! Our journey began with my mom contracting pneumonia. In hospital ICU for 11 days on vent, then a trach was put in and off they pushed her to Select LTAC "hospital" the next day. She was not ready to go. She was still too sick. But this is what happens in Florida. We were told that Select would get her off the ventilator and that was their expertise. On the surface, Select appeared pleasant and the doctors and nurses, competent. But alas...that was not the case. They completely bungled my mother's case and its a miracle she survived. Here is what they did: 1) she arrived awake and alert, but very weak. She was new on the trach and on the ventilator still. She wasn't ready for their rehab yet. She was still sick with tons of fluid on her lungs, and a possible lung infection still. They started the process to rehab and She ended up with either a mucous plug or anxiety her third day, and the staff freaked out and put her in their ICU under extreme sedation.....we still don't really know why that happened. They gave her More sedation than she had in the actual hospital she started in! Anyway, she then endured 11 days of them over medicating past the legal limit, and hitting her with every antibiotic and narcotic known to man to keep her sedated because the minute she woke up her blood pressure soared. Oh yeah...then we had the MRSA infection. Anyway, the nurses were very nice and caring but the pulmonology team was HORRENDOUS and could not figure out how to find a way to give her blood pressure meds to normally regulate her blood pressure. Really? so, instead they kept her under sedation constantly..and kept telling us they don't know how she's living with all the meds they were giving her (again...why can't you figure out the blood pressure thing??) and the nasty young pulmonologist said my mother would "never be my mother again", while completely avoiding answering any questions as to what happened in those moments when she first came in and was awake and making jokes and then moments later, was whisked to ICU under sedation.. blaming the patient for the situation and belittling us for even asking the question.It was a cluster f*** of incompetence..though again, they were nice and pleasant and they tried their best to kill with kindness. 2) it's important to note that never in the 11 days did they think they were in over their head and thought to send her back to the hospital or call in a specialist to help the blood pressure regulation. Instead, more propofol, fentanyl, antibiotics only used to be used for World War Z, etc were thrown at her. They kept preparing us for the worst, while trying to make it happen. 3) Their incompetence reached a crescendo when instead of giving my mom a shot of blood thinner to prevent clotting as she was bed bound, they gave her a BAG of heparin in her IV line, causing rectal bleeding and sending her to JFK hospital. Crazy to say but Thank God they did that! Had she been at Select one more day, they would have certainly killed her. 4) JFK...a "real" hospital, tried to get to the bottom of why the bag of heparin? Reason...Select had no idea how it got there! Select also refused to supply records, other than a hand written list of meds that came with her to the ER. JFK ICU doctor then told me that what had happened to my mom at Select was questionable and very concerning. Didn't understand the over the limit narcotics and the over the top antibiotics. Questioned their respiratory therapy methods. We decided we ain't going back...no way, no how. 5) JFK got mom's blood pressure under control and got her to be "awake, alert and ready to be weaned" off the ventilator. Yeah! After 10 days there (we wanted more) we were pretty much kicked out, as these places do. 6) we chose to go to Kindred instead to be weaned this time. And while we had problems with the nursing staff or lack, thereof, there (see my yelp review on kindred) we had an excellent pulmonology and respiratory therapy group...extremely competent! They weaned her off the vent and she was able to move onto a Rehab and to leave the hospital system! A true success story. Oh yeah...nasty, young pulmonologist...Mom is Back and herself! And you, my friend, are a terrible doctor! So if you are thinking of going to Select, I would advise you MAKE SURE there is ABSOLUTELY nothing medically wrong with your loved one....or they could just end up whisked off their ICU, put in a medically induced coma for no reason, and given a bag of blood thinners to cause internal bleeding, all the while you are being yelled at by a nasty, young pulmonologist for even asking why and how? On another note, these LTAC's...ALL of them are scary and in Florida, patients are being released way too early to them from hospitals. fight to keep your loved one in the hospital for as long as you can! read more

Staff is lazy and rude. Do not work with pt to get them out of bed. Will leave Patients in Bed as long as they can. Patients emotional needs not addressed. Patients are only seen as medicare dollars. Case Manager does not work with families. Nothing is urgent until the Medicare money runs out and then you get threatening phone calls to from Case Manager. read more
