Over the past 30 years, I have dealt with various types of lawyers - from patent to immigration to accident to estate. I find Marcus Seiter at Seiter Law to be the best lawyer of all, let alone in estate law, (with him being my third, not including to the one that made me wait for over an hour).
As someone who designs computer chips for a living, I'm used to complexity. I can be very demanding as I take things very far to get the results and the control that are specific to my need. However, knowing that my approach can be counterproductive, I often tone it down when working with someone at some point depending on the progress. Then I noticed that Marcus has already adjusted his working style to match mine, much to my surprise. In my experience, highly skilled and successful people (especially lawyers) tend to stay with the same working style which, at times, comes across as inflexible, making collaboration difficult. As highly skilled as Marcus is, he is quite as pleasant to work with, making the process which can be complicated and confusing much more manageable. Marcus always handles all my questions and requests with courtesy and professionalism.
Marcus is an expert in his field with a broad knowledge in estate law and the big picture in mind. He is generous with his time, especially in getting to know my goals and values. Marcus is a quick thinker and able to recall issues and make numerous suggestions that are relevant and valuable to meet the objectives. He also has the end goal in mind as he is always making sure that the final product is consistent and straight-forward, and not just true to the letter only. Over the course of establishing my revocable trust, Marcus made so many simplifications for more precise documents/instructions that are also easy to interpret and enforce. He took the time to hold a conference with the corporate trustee team of a large investment company, who are also lawyers in the field. Marcus was well capable of handling all the questions, and extremely instrumental in representing me in making clarifications and/or solving problems in real time.
Marcus is also motivated. He has structured his firm to focus on client's needs and satisfaction. Marcus regularly does the follow-up calls himself, checking in to keep the case progressing. I expect to find someone with his level of expertise in a large (expensive) law firm where you can only expect very limited time with your attorney, and the rest with the paralegal assigned to your case. This business model obviously focuses on optimizing revenue and not customer service which is fine if your case/instructions are broad or not very specific. If you require certain items to be specific to suit your unique situation which, I think, is quite common, the process can become drawn out, especially without an expert guidance when issues come up. My first two estate attorneys were extremely hard to reach after the initial appointments, with well-guarded office phones and doors.
