From the Zurich HB you can take Tram 3 to the Romerhof stop, cross the street and you are the entrance to the Dolderbahn. If you need to buy tickets, don't be confused by the little shop selling gums and candies, just head inside to where you get onto the funicular and purchase the tickets from the automated ticket machine. The Dolderbahn runs about every ten minutes, and there are several stops along the way to the final stop at the top. At the top you will find a Curling events centre and a large outdoor ice skating rink, just follow the brown signs to get to your final destination. I can't wait to head back to the outdoor ice skating rink as it even has a large lighted Christmas tree smack dab in the middle. It is like a Hallmark Christmas movie come to life!

I recently went to the top with my friend, and at the top there are MANY different hikes that you can start on. We only had a short time so we took a easy 15 minute walk on a easy path through the Wildkirchli Caves. In the caves prehistoric finds have been made and there is a little museum talking about the history of the caves housed in a old hermit dwelling. There were actual hermits that used to inhabit the caves as a place of worship from 1658-1853. At the top there is also a restaurant and guest house with 16 guestrooms. During the winter you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding. Definitely a must if you are in Appenzell and want to enjoy the local beauty. I want to go back when I have more time and can do so more extensive hiking!

Since opening about a year ago, the Cabrio ride to Stanserhorn is a not-to-be-missed experience for…read morepanoramic beauty shots of the snow-covered Swiss mountains. The first part of the experience is a ride in an old-fashioned wooden train car with open sides to allow the scents of green meadows and cow manure to awaken the senses. Nice. But, then, we got off and walked aboard the double decker, convertible cable car and that's when the real adventure began! Steel cables and a pulley system glide the cable car up to a 7,000 (or thereabouts) elevation. At times during the ride, it felt like the car swooped over a hump causing everyone in the car to gasp and scream, not unlike being on a stand-up roller coaster. Meanwhile, the views were simply breathtaking. At the top, we were lucky enough to be the first group up so we had sweeping views of the mountains unfettered by crowds. This level has the a restaurant and gift shop, but if you go, do make the time to take the side trail or walk up to the top viewing platform for even more amazing views overlooking the lake region. You'll be rewarded for the effort!

The ride was steady and smooth, giving us a gracefully view of the mountains and the valley below. It was fun watching the folks skiing become tiny as we traveled higher up the mountain. There were about 10 passengers in the cable car. We all rode comfortably together. There were seats, but most of us opted to stand to take in the view. Be sure to take out your camera, you'll get some great pictures! Ride time: 5 - 10 minutes.

07.09.25 Switzerland was leg number 6/7…read more Zurich was hub but made sure to do a tour to see the Swiss Alps. Titlis was an hour from Lucern and the scenery driving to the tram was very idyllic. Taking the tram to the top took a good 20-25 minutes. We beelined for the ice cave which was exciting for the kids, one plays hockey and my girl figure skates so no biggie for them. I on the other hand was super careful not to slip walking on ice. I already broke my coccyx snow boarding once. I wasn't going to do it again at 10k ft elevation. Make sure to wear hiking shoes with good traction. It was very gloomy and cold that day, felt like winter because of the summer storm. We all braved going outside to do the cliff walk but the visibility was no more than 5ft, only my daughter and hubby got to the end of the suspension bridge. It felt like Mt Everest and we only had our last minute parkas and hoodies purchase on so my fingers were frozen popsicles. Our tickets also included the ice flyer but because we were going to be exposed to the frigid temp, we decided to ditch it and cozied up inside the restaurant for some hot cocoa. On our way down we got off Trübsee, explored the lake and got a little too close to the grazing cows, they do stink. Despite the crappy weather, it was an exciting adventure for the family.

With this Pass- you get to ride all trains boats and buses for free. 2.With the pass you also get 50% off all Skylifts/trams taking you up to the mountain tops. FYI if you think you will save money by buying Swiss train tickets individually, you probably wont. The individual price value for a single train ticket is very expensive. Especially if you are going from major cities to country side. You may need to use several trains.
