The NoBo (North Broadway) Art District is Boulder's only official arts district. It dates back to a…read more2009 revival of the First Fridays arts open house tradition and now encompasses more than 350 professional artists and creative businesses--mostly in the North Broadway and Lee Hill corridors. Administrative offices are at the NoBo on the Corner location which also includes work, meeting, and exhibition space. The Bus Stop gallery is a formal exhibition location while the NoBo Art Center is a more casual work, meeting, and exhibition spot. A group of 20 to 30 studios, galleries, and related businesses is open from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the first Friday of every month. There are regular exhibits at the three NoBo gallery spaces (Art Center, Bus Stop, and On the Corner) plus the independent East Window gallery. The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art is planning to construct a large new building plus related facilities at Broadway and Violet Avenue which will be the North Boulder Creative Campus. Construction is estimated to start in late 2027 with completion by late 2029. The Art District is actively working on the streetscape with sculptures, murals, lighting, and other installations in progress. NoBo also curates members' art in local businesses. There's a monthly podcast, a newsletter, a book with member profiles and NoBo information, a calendar of events, and a comprehensive Web site. North Broadway was an underutilized part of town only a few years ago, but is becoming a vibrant area filled with modern housing, new businesses, and a rising arts scene. It should really be impressive over the next few years.

So, right from the get-go I am going to have to warn you all that this review will be slightly…read morebiased, as I used to be an employee here. That aside, I feel that I can give you all the inside scoop. So here is the deal: the CU art gallery is one of those places that is tucked away and little known, which is sad since not only does it show what the undergrads and grads are working on for their theses, but also has revolving professional exhibits. For instance, last fall the gallery had a show with contemporary Tibetan and Latin American art, flown in especially for this smaller gallery in Boulder. No joke....Tibetan monks were at the opening, and the art was.........AMAZING. I'm talking Tate contemporary good. Ok ok ok...so maybe the art doesn't always live up to Tate standards, but what it does is showcase not only the university's efforts to make strong aspiring artists, but also will show you art that you won't see anywhere else. This is cutting edge stuff, which means sometimes it aims for the stars and fails, but also sometimes that you really can find some beautiful stuff that these students put their life into. The shows are revolving often. Usually you will have a professional show in Feb-March, Sept-Oct followed by the Masters students in April /November and finally the B.A. students in May/December. 6-7 shows a year always keeps this place fresh. Now the current exhibit will be running for another week. After which alas the building closes for the summer. There will be a new temporary location next year, while a whole new gallery is being built. Once that is open, it will be 4x bigger, and will become the biggest gallery in Boulder...12 rooms, permanent shows, coat-checks, everything. In any case, this is one of those hidden gems that needs to get out there. I didn't really know about the place until I was employed for these guys, so I hope that you all will think it is worthwhile to come check it out. Drawbacks: the gallery is fairly small and consists of 4 rooms or so, with about 15-20 artists on average. CU itself actually has a very large collection of art up in the vaults here, but the gallery right now is too small to keep up a permanent exhibit. This will soon change however. It's free to the public as well Oh and all the employees are awesome :)

I love this place! Not only am I surrounded by talented and fun and inspiring people but I can take…read moreclasses here by one of the best instructors I've ever had. Raz is a fantastic communicator and can really push his students to be the best they can be. He meets us all at our own skill level and kindly and with delightful humor pushes us to improve. There are no other schools or teachers around here that I know of that takes an atelier style approach to art instruction. We enjoy having LOTS of time to work on our drawings or paintings- with models that resume the same pose for many weeks. This enables us to take our time and really get it right. Raz patiently helps us to see and compare, his skill is obvious as he directs us. Even though he is a true master, he does not condescend like some instructors I have known. If you are serious about learning the discipline and joy of creating art, I believe that taking classes at ArtWorkSpace is one of the best places on the front range to expand your ability as an artist.

The Greater Boulder Youth Orchestras provide a variety of opportunities for young musicians to…read moredeepen their musical skills and passion and to engage the community through performances of the highest possible artistic level. Like most youth orchestras, this is a non-profit organization set up to further supplement the band or orchestra experience in public or private schools. Kids who participate in this really enjoy music and appreciate the fact that their peers practice and want to play and explore challenging and beautiful pieces together. Here's what I love about this group - Unlike some club sports (soccer, etc), this group encourages and even requires kids to remain involved with their school musical organization (thus they don't strip players from the schools). - The instructors/conductors are OUTSTANDING, they are funny, patient, really insightful and creative. They play a fair share of world premieres, pieces composed by local composers or kids, great classics, etc. I don't know how they did it but GBYO has a terrific staff starting from their manager Brian Jack, a super friendly, funny and thoughtful world class bassoonist. - The rehearsals are on Monday night and are fun, but efficient. This organization recognizes that students are busy and have a lot to do and really honors their time. They have a growing mentor program so not only do the kids play in a full ensemble, sectionals (for example wind and brass break off to play their own pieces), but they even break down to small groups led by U of Colorado mentors (often graduate students). There are also chamber opportunities, etc. - Performances are usually in the Macky. This is kind of a cool, exciting venue for the kids to play in. - They key players into all kinds of playing and listening opportunities around Colorado. Anyway, we're super psyched that we found this organization. GBYO rehearsals are easily my child's favorite part of the week.
