We came on a gloomy/snowy day so there weren't other patrons and it seemed like we got an extended tour, we were there for around 2 hours, but I think normally the tours are about 30-45 minutes. During the tour you get to also go inside the tower and see the lightbulb that's been on since 1929! If you're from the area, it's definitely worth it to go and learn about the history of this place and Edison's inventions. I thought I did a review because it's been years since I visited. I was drawn to this business page because on this morning's news they said what they called the Firefighters Museum (and they said it is on Prince Street), was closed! They said it was closed indefinitely because of structural issues in the 120 year old building where the museum is housed. I've searched the web and this is the only museum I can find related Fire Departments and the history of Firefighters in NYC. I'm finally doing my review so you will check before you visit. This museum may be temporarily closed. I'm going to look for my additional photos to post. It's definitely an overdue review!

Our two-year-old Leo B. is obsessed with fire trucks, so we decided to take him to the NYC Fire…read moreMuseum last month while we were visiting New York. It was less exciting than I'd hoped--I guess I'd expected to see, I don't know, like one fire truck that looks like the ones in his books--but it was still a worthwhile stop, and he enjoyed himself quite a bit. The museum is small, housed in an old fire station in Hudson Square, with exhibits spread out across a couple of floors. You enter and exit through the gift shop, which is also where you purchase tickets. The guy at the register was very nice, and we bought three adult tickets (mom, dad, grandma) at $10 apiece, all so the little one, whose ticket was "free," could enjoy fifteen minutes roaming among the firefighting artifacts. I think we were the only visitors the entire time we were there. We saw a handful of old fire engines spread out between the two floors, and these were pretty cool, and Leo recognized them as fire trucks of sorts and enjoyed looking at and discussing their big wheels. He was less interested in the smaller items, which would probably be intriguing to slightly older kids. We also kept him out of the 9/11 memorial room, which seemed less designed for boisterous toddlers than the rest of the place, but which we adults appreciated. I honestly think our kid's favorite part of the museum might have been the gift shop, where I discovered that my son understands the concept of buying things and taking them home. He wanted every fucking variant on a fire truck toy--squishy and plastic, small and large; ambulance, van, engine. We settled on a big fire truck with an extendable ladder, which is now one of his favorite toys. It was over $40 and one of the stickers started peeling off pretty immediately, but I do think it's reasonably solid quality. We bought the same one for a friend's two-year-old, as well as a soft toy for his baby sister, both of which went over well. We also got an FDNY T-shirt for Leo, so the museum made a decent amount of money off of us. I'm guessing we didn't see all there was to see, but as our two-year-old wasn't clamoring to learn about the fire department's history, I think we did things right. We had a pleasant visit at the NYC Fire Museum and would recommend it if you or your small ones are fascinated by firefighting.

We had the pleasure of meeting the artist, Mr. Lenny who explained he grew up very poor in the West Indies and used to make his own toys out of different things he found around the house and in his community. He stated he started working as a car mechanic when he came to NYC and started making little objects out of scrap metal and then progressed to larger items. The art work was definitely more impressive after hearing his story and modest beginnings. Mr. Lenny was very humble and didn't appear to be that motivated in being in the "limelight" to promote his work. He stated he really didn't sell his art pieces but would occasionally make a piece for commission if he was in the mood to do the work. Mr. Lenny did have some small affordable souvenirs available for purchase including tee shirts, posters and mugs. My favorite pieces were Michael Jackson, Obama and the 9/11 memorial. We also saw one of Lenny's pieces at the Snug Harbor Park. Mr. Lenny is truly an artist to be reckoned with and it was cool visiting his museum and him being there answering our questions and just opening up about his personal journey. This was like my 3rd time in Staten Island so I am not familiar with the area but we took the Ferry and then bus 40 to get to his museum. He also had a bathroom for visitors and it was clean. LOL. This is definitely a spot to check out and then you can walk to Staten Island's gorgeous park, Snug Harbor which is what we did, it was about a 15 minute walk for yall non walkers or the bus was right on the corner.

Not everything was fully in bloom yet, but the greenery, trees, shrubs, and gardens were absolutely beautiful and created such a peaceful, serene atmosphere. Parking is a bit limited, but we were able to find a spot fairly quickly. The grounds were easy to walk, beautifully maintained, and full of great photo spots. I also loved the maze garden area and the small reading/sunroom space, which added such a charming touch. I even saw people having picnics, and it immediately made me want to come back and do the same. Only small thing to note: we did notice some poison ivy in certain areas, so just be mindful. Overall, easy to get to, peaceful, and absolutely worth visiting. Already looking forward to coming back in June when everything is in full bloom.

It is one block of abolished row of tenements and townhouses pre 1950s. It is located La Guardia Place between Bleecker and West Houston Streets in Greenwich Village, NYC. Time Landscape does fend an illusion for the appearance of Dutch settlers who established New Amsterdam. It is an area where visitors travel back in time to 17th century City of New York. It is here where visitors do not need Dr. Emmett Brown's DeLorean car from "Back to the Future" franchise for time travel. This area certainly contains a lot of green and forest look. This space has, indeed, encroached by New York University's real estate expansion through time and progress for economic gain.

Have you ever wondered what the Island of Manhattan's natural environment looked like before it was…read morebuilt over by settlers from Europe, and their descendents? Artist Alan Sonfist explored this question and his response was a highly unusual example of public art called "Time Landscape." The art work consists of a plot of land carefully planted with grasses, trees, shrubs and flowers representing the type of plant life growing in Manhattan prior to settlement by the Dutch in the 17th century. Time Landscape is a 25 x 40 foot rectangular plot at the Northeast corner of La Guardia Place and West Houston Street, maintained by the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. Sonfist first developed his idea for the project in 1965 and he, together with community volunteers, realized it in 1978. In recent years, there have been some issues with maintaining the art work, including issues with homeless people sleeping in it and non-native plants invading. The issues point to the unusual nature of this type of art and really challenge the city and the community to address them, while preserving the artist's vision. It's appropriate that this art work exists at the Northern boundary of the Soho neighborhood. When Sonfist was developing his idea, a vibrant, groundbreaking type of art practice variously called "Earth Art," or "Land Art" was being created by current or former residents of the Soho artist community. Sonfist's artist contemporaries such as Robert Smithson, Walter de Maria, Michael Heizer, Nancy Holt and many others would create their Earth Artworks throughout the US (and especially in the Western US). Sonfist created this great example of Land Art right here in New York.
