I have worked with Josefa (or Sefa) for over a year now. I didn't want to see a counselor at all, initially, but was given an ultimatum of sorts and acquiesced. I said no to three different counselors/coaches to start (despised one of them, actually), and then gave Josefa a try with a 'what the hell?' attitude half-expecting yet another disappointment. I was not disappointed. By now, she is a friend to me. Yes, a counselor, of course, but also a confidant and what one hopes for from a good friend. Tough love, if required, but never the starting point. There is no hierarchy or 'I'm the professional' attitude. Nor is she there to gloss over shortcomings or there simply to absorb complaints. She is genuinely interested in helping--emphasis on 'helping'--me be better. Some ideas, some exercises...some work, some don't (though most do :-)), and, in the end, things get better. Always. Whatever quirks or traits I have (or lack) needn't be 'strengths' or 'weaknesses' in whatever cliched view I had before. Instead, they are now more understood without judgement and, with her help, I can focus on where and how to leverage them to everyone's benefit vs. trying to suppress or fake them. It is so much easier to accept myself for who I am now--and, of course, who I am not. The whole process has made me much more comfortable with myself and others. Still a work in progress, to be certain, but I'm a grateful person. I look forward to tomorrow every night. And I'm happy. read more

Yelp reviews are generally easy to write. You like something or you dislike something and... you give your reasons. When I started to write something (I won't call it a review) for Josefa, I wasn't ready. I wanted what I wrote to mean something and to reflect how I feel about the affect she's had on my life. So, I'll take a shot now, but I'm still not sure I can do her justice. Josefa is a truly gifted person. She not only had an almost immediate understanding of the person I was, but also a tremendous insight into 'why I was' and how I could be the person I wanted to be. It's interesting because I had visited a counselor on and off over many years, whom I thought was good. However, in just two coaching sessions with Josefa, I discovered things about myself that I had neither thought of nor discussed, previously. Over the course of working with Josefa for a few months, she helped me to better understand myself, which led to quite a change in the way I feel about myself and how I interact with the world around me. From session to session, she always was on top of what we had previously discussed and was familiar with issues that were currently affecting my life. And, she was always on point with suggestions on how to best handle situations. Furthermore, the suggestions were ones that I could carry forward with me to future issues. Does everything work out for me now exactly like I want it to... of course not. But, I can certainly handle things much better now than I previously could. I started working with Josefa in 2012 and I am honored to have been her first life coaching client. Josefa completely changed my life - there is no other way to say it. Found Josefa right here on Yelp, and she has been a wonderful addition to my life. She's a master at not judging anyone, asking the right questions, and being loving and supportive. I wish she could be everyone's life coach but then she'd probably go crazy and I wouldn't want that. For people who don't quite know what life coaching is or why it's useful, Josefa is kind of like the person who helps you get out of your own head. She has no vested interest in the decisions you make so she doesn't try to persuade you to do or not do anything. All she wants is for you to achieve your own unique goals, whatever they are, and even as you're trying to figure out what they even are. She works with you to determine how you'd measure your own success, and helps you not be motivated by negative thought patters so you don't use your life passions as some sort of means to shield yourself from painful memories. She comes from a very unique background so she's particularly able to not be intimidated or off-put by someone's walk of life. I feel like she'd be equally supportive to someone who was deeply religious as someone who was a total atheist and everything in between. The money I've invested in my work with her is more than a traditional co-pay (she's out-of-network for me), so on some level I feel like I have my own skin in the game. This forces me to take the work she assigns me that much more seriously. And in the grand scheme of things, I think the money I invest in coming up with a detailed and healthy plan for my whole life is buck-for-buck more worth it than anything I could have ever spent money on. I met Josefa when she agreed to do a charity Goddess Day to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in 2013 at my home. She saw so many women that day and helped them all so much. She was extremely popular, everyone just loved her. She donated all the proceeds to LLS, because this is who she is. About six months later, I was facing one of the most challenging and transitional times in my life as my role of mother of minor children and a marriage of more than 20 years was ending. The life I knew was never to be again. Josefa helped me navigate through this time and helped me remember who I was. This realization is where I live from today and it drives all my energy.
