I learned while visiting Mannheim that the city has an enormous Turkish population, and therefore it has dozens of Turkish restaurants. Uzun Tasfirini is acclaimed as one of the best spots in the "Little Istanbul" neighborhood, specializing in pides. Pides (pronounced "pea-days") are the Turkish equivalent to pizza. This snack food is a large flatbread topped with ground lamb, tomatoes, and spices, which bakes in a wood-fired oven for less than 10 minutes. It is then cut into squares and served with peppers, parsley, and lemons. You assemble the peppers and parsley yourself, squeezing lemon over your pide before you fold it up and indulge in this pizza treat. It's a simple, delicious dish that you can't miss out on if you're in Mannheim or are feeling homesick for a slice of pizza.

A fresh, filling meal including a drink will run you about 6 Euros, which is hard to beat. To start, order the mercimek corbasi soup, a lentil soup made fresh in house. It comes with fresh baked Turkish flat bread, lemon and spices. For the main course, there's a variety of pides to choose from, but my favorite is the spinach & feta -- freshly chopped bright green spinach mixed with creamy cheese, engulfed in homemade Turkish bread, with generous brushed butter on top, crisped to perfection. Heaven is a place on earth with you.

I have had a lot of Persian cuisine in the past and really enjoyed it, so I was keen to try this place out. If you did not know this place, you are not likely to find it. It's located in a quite residential street and there is nothing but apartments around here. It's away from the city centre and obviously popular with people in the area. The name Djadoo in Hindi means "magic" and I suspect the same in Persian, as they have their napkins with Alladins Magic Lamp under the logo ;-)) The place is reasonably big, yet cosy. The place was packed but they were kind enough to get us a table. Our waitress was really sweet and very friendly and was quite happy to make recommendations for us. The menu here is huge and has many classical Persian dishes and many North African dishes from Morocco and Tunisia with a bit of turkey thrown in. They have a varied wine list from Lebanese, Turkish, Moroccon, Tunisian, French and Israeli wine. They also have some classic Persian drinks like pomegranate juice and so on. We decided to have a mixed starter and some tagine for main. The food here is excellent and full of flavour. The lamb was simply amazing and it just fell of the bone and no knife was needed for it :-)) It is relatively mild and has lots of piquante, fruity, saffrony and other sweet spice flavours. Persian food is slightly more greasy and creamy, but tastes heavenly. The saffron rice pudding with the pomegranate sorbet for dessert was a hit and once again a recommendation from the waitress. I usually do this in a new place, ask the staff for recommendations and try a few things. Service was super good and despite it being full it was quick and friendly. I found out during my conversation with the waitress that the restaurant has been open for 3 years. I would come back here in a heartbeat. This is excellent Persian / Oriental / North African cuisine with beautiful flavours, good service and not too expensive. It's certainly not a cheap place to eat but the quality is excellent. If you want to try something out of the usual this is really a great place to try. Ask for some recommendation and enjoy your meal. I could not fault our experience here tonight.

The costumers' clothes were completely soaked in milk forcing him to leave the restaurant and come back an hour later. In the meantime the waiters just served the food, which was of course cold when the costumer came back. Again no comment, no apologies, and the costumer had to insist for the food to be warmed up at least. Everything was put on the bill as if nothing had happened. I definitely won't go there again. It is not worth the food, there are other good Persian places.
