I recently started volunteering here again (I've been here a handful of times in the past). This is a super clean, organized & overall nice facility. You can sign up for volunteering slots online and when you show you up they have pcs where you check in. There's a short presentation before the shift starts to give backstory then you move to the production floor. There's handwashing stations, gloves, hairnets as you will be dealing with food. Forgot to mention before they have lockers where you can store your items. At SHH you never know what you will be working with until you get there. I've done bread, black beans, potatoes, onions & a few other produce items before. The staff are great at giving instructions as well as coming around to assist. They play music during the shift which is nice. There's a bit of a cleaning process towards the end but goes pretty quick. At the end of the shift they go over the impact you made (as a whole/shift) which is cool to see the difference you are making. If you are looking for volunteer opportunities I would highly recommend SHH!

This was such a fun volunteering experience! We went with a group from Surly Gives a Damn and had such a fun time. We had RSVP'd for an evening packing session and it was a good time. They were very welcoming and friendly which made it easy to enjoy our first time. The instructions were very thorough and we were able to really get in the groove of hour and some time slot. There was a variety of different roles available which had differing levels of physicality so you can bring the whole family and divide among tasks based on ability. Our session was full so definitely RSVP early and book a session! We made a lot of packages of food while we were there and it was so fun to see how much we had made and learn about where it would be distributed after. It was a very great way to spend an evening as we were able to chat while getting the work done. We really valued the ability to give back to our community and it felt very easy to do. There is not many places you can spend an evening for free and this is definitely a fun way to get a group of friends or family together.

Loved volunteering here and their mission was incredible! I only wish I could volunteer more but all their hours are during my work hours.

Well Run! Everyone is professional, options are clearly laid out. Everything was so Clean!read more

Dropped off a box of food products I'd received from a client. Quick, easy, and lovely. Writing…read morethis took at least thrice as long as the entire donation process did. RECIPIENTS: The place is clearly well-attended with several individuals and families in the waiting area awaiting their turn in the three entries per 15-minute arrangement, though everyone is free to take as long as they prefer once in the pantry. The pantry itself is spacious with shelves lining the walls of a large room, bustling with activity from shoppers seeking healthy fare. A mobility bus even stopped right in front of the pantry and assisted elderly attendees to the vehicle. From my understanding, they also operate a mobile food pantry truck. DONORS: The shelves could definitely be fuller especially given the level of activity they clearly see, so feel free to drop by with some gifts! Donations are weighed after separating perishables from non-perishables. The weights are then recorded onto a donation receipt, with a copy handed to the donor to go on their merry way through a separate door - which you should look for upon arriving if you're dropping off food, unlike me who unknowingly waltzed into the main area instead. It's a seemingly little thing, but dignity matters a great deal and is among the first things to feel compromised when dealing with difficult times, and it might not feel that great relying on food pantries for some individuals, so I greatly appreciate The Open Door going that extra mile to keep their recipients' sense of comfort in mind. Well done, team. Due to the nature of the environment, I only took a photo of the front for ease of identification for anyone wanting to find it. It's in a low-key plaza sitting at the foundation level of an apartment building behind the high-end shopping center in the area. Google Maps took me for a little spin, so keep your eyes open!
