My mother lived at North Oaks (including in the Autumn Ridge [Assisted Living] section) from late…read moreApril of 2014 until her death in late October of this year. She was in the Independent Living section during her first nearly-three years, and that's where the majority of problems transpired. There was a significant unresponsiveness of "in charge" personnel on multiple occasions: #1: One time my mother fell in her apartment and fractured her wrist. She called me and I got the Security guy to go up there, and he had an aide sent to my mother's apartment - but even though I'd already arranged for my nephew to go there and take my mother to the hospital, the aide *refused* to wait (a short while) until he arrived. #2: Another time, an aide forgot to go to my mother's apartment to dispense her medications (fortunately I was able to get a nurse from the Assisted Living section to go to my mother's apartment). #3: Another time, an aide became angry that my mother had already taken her pills before the aide's arrival (my mother had waited much longer than usual), and the aide - in retribution - didn't dispense my mother's next pill (which was *dangerous*) and she also didn't put out my mother's lunch foods (the latter needed to be done temporarily because my mother's broken wrist hadn't yet healed). Fortunately that aide was fired - but another time, the aide never went to my mother's apartment to dispense the morning pills. #4: My mother was erroneously billed for several things and multiple people kept refusing to delete those charges from her monthly bill (I handled all of those things - but the amount of time and effort required to contend with all of that was absolutely inexcusable). North Oaks has been under new management for more than a year and the situation seems to have improved - and admittedly it's probably a better place than many other facilities, which is why I'm giving four stars when otherwise I'd only give three. Meanwhile; during the 6 2/3 years that my mother lived in the Assisted Living section, there was a significant shortage of personnel during much of that time and a significant turnover of senior staff - although to be fair, covid had commenced about 3 1/2 years prior to my mother's death and therefore the former situation was typical everywhere. A few of the nurses worked there for a long time and they were wonderful. However; the ongoing staff shortage necessitated my needing to hire private aides ten hours/day for about the last 2 1/2 years of my mother's life, because it wasn't safe for her to be left alone for most of 24 hours/day - and she'd fallen in her room and broken her hip when left unattended for several hours before I'd hired the private aides (and I'm still devastated to remember that she was crying out for help and it took eons for someone to respond), so that was the precipitating factor in needing to hire private aides. Needless to say, the cost of those aides was exorbitant when combined with the cost of the facility.

Living there was hell for my grandparents and certainly not a welcome experience in their late stage of life. North Oaks does a very good sales pitch and presented quite well but after the money is in the bank, the contract's signed, and a few months into the daily life their true colors start to show. After moving out. receiving back their "return-of-capital" returned took an excessively long time and required much follow up. Moving into this property was my grandparents' final plan. The stress that living there caused gave my grandfather health issues and lowered their quality of life. We wound up moving them to another (IMO far better run and significantly cheaper) retirement center at their request despite the cost and hassle because the conditions wound up being too hard for them there. Moving again caused them further hardship. Be very wary when considering this property for a loved one. Things aren't always how they appear to be from the outside.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Noely and Diamond, both of whom took the opportunity and time out of their busy day to meet with me and acclimate me to the services Autumn Lake provides. Noely asked detailed questions regarding my mom and her needs which was greatly appreciated. I was met with such warmth, kindness, and patience from the team. This facility is OUTSTANDING and the lobby mirrors a hotel. My sincerest apologies team. I could've saved you all time by advising that my mom required hemodialysis, but it was such a pleasure meeting the three wonderful ladies. I can tell that they are passionate about their work and care. Noely took the time to reach out to a sister facility that could accommodate my mom's needs and I am forever grateful. She gave me such reassurance which is invaluable for caregivers. I would encourage anyone in need of care for a loved one to come in and visit this facility.

But I think what was most disappointing/concerning was the appearance of the lunch that was served to the patient. Appeared totally unappetizing and inedible.......really just a plate of maybe mashed sweet potato (?) or carrots(?) and potatos (?)....didn't appear to be any protein and some broken up crackers??!!! How is this acceptable? The two staff people I encountered during my 2 hour visit seemed very pleasant.

If you have a family member, and you love him/her, I strongly advise you to find another Assisted…read moreLiving Facility. My relative was there for 2.5 years. Initially, the majority of the staff were great, but as the pandemic improved, many of the good staff left. One problem did persists throughout the experience - a loss of personal items (clothes, bedding, telephone, diapers, wipes, etc.); items were labeled and yes, it was reported to management. Replacing these items became a cost of doing business. As my relative's needs increased, the signs of neglect and/ abuse via negligence began to surface. Also, if you decide to not heed this warning, pay close attention to medications prescribed by their medical staff to prevent overmedicating and/or prescription charges for medicines not taken. Despite my unflattering review, there were still a handful of remarkably, caring staff members that I wish I could clone. Unfortunately, these great people were put in terribly understaffed situations, or paired with the bad staff members. Unfortunately, the bad outweighed the good. I pray my review doesn't impact the good people. Staff that need to be under a microscope: -Front desk women, first initial A. rudest of the rude. -Director of Health, first initial N. -3rd floor Supervisor, first initial S. -Facility Director, first initial S. I'm sure the above staff have been put in terrible situations by their corporate leaders, but where is the humanity. This a business that holds human life in its hands; If you don't care about people, find another profession. With the exception of the front desk women, the others are in positions expected to monitor, inspect daily operations. I get the impression the corporate owner/leaders simple wants to keep raking in money, while spending the absolute least (for adequate staffing levels, nutritious food, etc.). After the first week, I spoke with the Assistant Executive Director and she reassured me that the check was in route and had been personally put in the mail by a staff member. The Assistant Executive Director stated that she was sorry to hear about the delay and would check the tracking of the check. Now, entering week two, there is no check nor update from the office. Conveniently when calls and voicemails are left to inquire about an update, no one is available and no one returns messages. Very very very disappointed in not only the treatment my mother faced but also the lack of professionalism in handling disputes and settling debts. UPDATE: It seems as if every time a review is written, that is when things get done at Woodholme Gardens. This place is notorious for not taking calls or returning them either. In regard to Shawn's reply, there were no calls made to me. The facility has my cellphone and has made frequent calls to my number in the past so there is no reason for calling my work number regarding a refund. Why not just call the cellphone number from the beginning? Once this review was written, the refund check was received the next day. On May 2nd (Thursday) a call was placed to my personal cell informing me that the refund check was issued and would be locked in a safe due to the persons absence from the office for the remaining of the week. On Monday, May 6th, I was told the check was actually MAILED out on Thursday! The same day I was told it would be placed in a safe. There was no time to pick it up. We waited patiently for 2 weeks and nothing came in the mail. Ironically, the check was released the day following my review of Woodholme. Long story short, this company is bad to do business with. The caregivers and on hand staff are awesome and loving. The Executives, not so much. Bad moral ethics and unfortunately gives everyone else a bad rep.
