On Earth Day, enjoy one of our beautiful beaches in the Fort Lauderdale area. One of my favorites is Sebastian Beach. It's just across the Ritz Carlton at the intersection of A1A and Sebastian. It's a beach open to all, but mostly frequented by the LGBT+ community. There are chairs and umbrellas for rent. Almost always there's someone with nice music, so you have the option to be close to the sounds of music or take a quieter place a few feet away. The beach has some nice shower heads, so you can rinse off as you come in or leave the beach. Close to public transportation, shared rides or public parking lots, it's easy and convenient to most people who live in east of Federal and between Las Olas and Commercial. Check it out. read more

The beach has been beautiful since it recently re-opened due to Covid-19 and during the week, hardly anyone is there. There's plenty of room for social distancing. The water was crystal cleara dn warm when I was there and since it's low tide about 12:30-2PM, we could walk out at least 50 yards and just have the water up to the waist. Then again, I'm 6'2". Since we've been having storms, there's a strong current, so one needs to keep a look out for your children or any children for that matter. My soon to be 7 year old nephew was in the shallow area, swimming with goggles on and when he came out of the water, he had already been carried 50-75 yards south. It was cute watching him look for us, as we kept an eye on him the entire time. He was looking all around expecting us to be right in front of him when he exited the ocean. After 23 years living here, I haven't gone to the beach much due to the crowds and the sand not being clean i.e. cigarette butts, people's waste, empty cans etc. But the beach was pretty clean and I hope it remains that way. I was motivated to buy a beach blanket and chair which will always be in my sport utility because even though I was there less tha two hours, I felt is was peaceful, refreshing and almost Zen like. In conclusion I'd like to say, GET YOUR BUTT TO THE BEACH ONCE IN A WHILE. IT'S THERAPEUTIC! read more

Ah the gay beach. The place where I can wear as little as I want to and frolic in the sand. Picture it: Kelis blasting from my iPhone. My speedo rocking as I lay my Little Mermaid towel on the beautiful white sand of the beach. "Milkshake" is bumping from my speakers while I rub lotion on my soon to be sun-kissed skin. "I could teach you, but I'd have to charge." Now that this image is stuck in your head... I love this beach. The water is clear, the sand is clean (gay's take care of things) and typically is not that busy. Best time: mornings- gay's party too late and don't typically hit the beach at 9am so go then. Parking is easy to find around the area. Beach Place is it far in case you need a water while you sun tan or just bring your own drinks. The beach goers are friendly so you'll probably make a friend or two. It's typically the only beach I go to. You will see all types of bodies there: muscle guys, beefy guys, skinny guys, and guys like me with bodies that look like road kill. So you have options in terms of eye candy. My husband and I are honeymooning in Ft Lauderdale. We were told about this beach at the resort. At first I was a bit hesitant cause 1. "Gay" anything usually means a 16-year old mean girls mentality 2. We want equality so us being a gay couple should be a non issue anywhere right? So Sebastian Beach is nice. Full of mostly older gay men and a few younger guys. We're in our mid thirties and there were only a handful of people younger then us. It doesn't feel like a meat market and people pretty much keep to themselves. If you're looking to Cruz this isn't the spot. If you want a relaxing time at the beach this is! Just a little plot of gay sand, on the beach, frequented by locals as well as gay tourists from the nearby backstreet gay resorts. Has a wide mix in age ranging from a few of the twink set to a much larger following of the senior or close to being senior set. Then it also has a good 5 to nearly 10% straight; some who put on a pretty good comedy show. That show usually starts with the tourist guy and girl who unwittingly toss down their beach towels, dash into the water and then when coming back onto the beach with the girl friend or wife suddenly noticing the obvious crowd of gay guys, quickly grabs up their towels and escorts her male companion to another location. The only pains of going to Sebastian are parking and, being located next to a busy highway, having to cross A1A to get to it. However, such is life all along the beaches of Lauderdale. read more

If you're tired of the SoBe artificial scene with plastic people and overpriced restaurants, Sebastian Beach is the place where the gay community has drifted as the market drifted nothwards also. Sebastian Beach is relatively small,in the shadow of the new Westin and Trump towers, but this small three-block area is assiduously populated by a large, in-shape, crowd, totally different from the Wal-Mart sized oiled crowd in the rest of the expansive Ft. Lauderdale beach. The gay area is three blocks to the South of the large string of gay B&B and gay hotels, and buffered to the North by the jet ski channel; to the South by that invisible buffer that seems to appear on all gay beaches. Much less pretentious than its cousin to the South. And nice people. read more

How do you find this beach? Look for the Ritz and start walking towards the water. Facing the water, it's the gay section to your left. It was like 90% gay when I went, so I don't think it's hard to find at all. There is no such thing as free parking. About a mile away there's a mall, but I won't want to risk being towed to save a few bucks. Feed the meters and relax yourself. Meters do vary in price from block to block, so some are cheaper than others. Just remember that it's Fort Lauderdale--the beach isn't crystal clear and clean. It could be. But it's usually not. It's cleaner than the waters of LA and so much warmer. I loved it. The waves aren't calm but I was able to float on my back and stare at the amazing buildings surrounding the beach. There is something about the waters in Florida that really rejuvenates me. Before I came to Florida, I thought I hated the beach. But now, I love going to the beach--especially when the water is this warm. I am glad to have shared this place with a friend and a really cool guy I met there. read more

The locals rave about this place like there was no other beach in town. The beach goers vary greatly depending on the season. Personally, I just do not like ANY part of Fort Lauderdale Beach. The beach itself is narrow, abundant in families and children, bordered by a loud/busy road. Give me Haulover or South Beach any day. The best thing about Sebastian Beach is that on a good day you can find free parking within 15 minutes walking distance where all the gay resorts are! If you are staying at one of the resorts the beach is very close. We drove around for awhile and finally found a spot. There are city lots too and they are far cheaper than the lots at South Beach. We saw a $10 lot here. Sebastian Beach is cool. You can watch the ocean liners go out to sea. It is not that obvious it is a gay beach since it does not have flags up like 12th Street Beach in South Beach does. The crowd is mostly gay men with few families or tourists coming in seemingly. I like that about this beach. At 12th Street Beach you have to hear straight couples making negative comments about the fact they are at a gay beach which is annoying. I do not like that Sebastian Beach seems to be cliqueish. I hate the locals only attitude of some beaches. Also, the beach is narrow and close to the hotels which block out the sun towards the end of the day. Another thing about Sebastian is that you get many of the gay resort guys here with hook up mentalities. A lot of them are older men. read more

This is a great beach! This is what California beaches would like to be, clear and clean ocean, white sand, and tropical palm trees. The only thing this beach may want are some cliffs to add to the scenery, but it's Florida, so it's all flat. This beach is pretty clean, seems safe, but you still see some sketchy people, so you should always be on your guard I suppose. I like how the ocean doesn't really have any strong smell unlike the Pacific, and it actually smells pretty good. Also, the boardwalk is nice, and you have all hotels, restaurants and shops nearby. 4 starts because it felt it was too windy most of time I've been here (Winter). read more

This is an average beach for South Florida. It is located next to Ft. Lauderdale's Ocean Drive that is literally separated from the beach by a sidewalk and short decorative wall. The gay locals love this beach but it is really just a continuation of the Ft. Lauderdale Beach- and this section happens to be simply be the gay section. As others have noted, the beach is narrow, it can get crowded and parking can be a challenge (there are a couple of small city parking lots opposite the beach entrance). The beach-goers are friendly; much as you would expect from a community-focused area of beach.If you are gay and in Ft. Lauderdale, it is worth a trip. If you are mobile and have all of South Florida, there are better choices: Haulover (10 miles), South Beach (20 miles) and Cape Florida (50miles) come to mind. read more

Let me explain this strip of Fort Lauderdale gay paradise. The "gay section" was originally a couple of miles to the north; but when THE PELICAN resort was built right on the spot and then storms obliterated that section of the beach, the gay community migrated south near the more trendy area where the ultra hetero movie WHERE THE BOYS ARE was filmed. It is the main section of the famous Fort Lauderdale/Spring Break hot spot. Enter the Sebastian Beach at it's main entrance (there's a huge sign on the beach wall AND the street sign), and this will place you in the thick of it. DO NOT move too far south from the life guard stand because as the sun goes down after 2pm the massive hotels completely shade the area. Straights often wonder in, mostly either by accident (and the looks on their faces are HISTERICAL when it dawns on them that there's nothing but gay men everywhere) or because they are totally oblivious. It's a nice place to be open and out in a relatively "safe" place (i.e. there's safety in numbers) which is predominantly hetero. And it's just around the corner from Wilton Manors - the gay capitol of South Florida. read more
