The vision therapy manager requested 12k out of pocket costs confirming my insurance would not cover. As soon as I raised concern about cost, they instantly provided a $4k reduction. The vision therapy manage was annoyed with me questioning the cost when come to find out my insurance coverage had never been checked! My insurance company had to reach out to them to get them to even check my insurance. They even called me back to let me know something seemed odd about their conversation with Suburban Eyecare Vision therapy manager. Sharing this experience as I'm honesty at a loss as to why this was such a difficult, confusing experience when it was easily avoidable with a little work - that I ended up doing in having my insurance company contact them. I ended up choosing not to go here given this experience and also after researching this isn't the first time this place has been involved in scams with the owners history of being indicted on many felony charges of writing illegal prescriptions. Avoid this place!

I've had a few small problems with them, including pricing issues and communication issues, but I was willing to overlook them. However, the last straw for me was at my most recent eye exam. During some routine tests, the tech sat me in a chair in a darkened room, explained the upcoming test to me, then nonchalantly told me that the test would be an additional $45 charge, without giving me an alternative or the option to reject the test. However, I interrupted her and told her that I wanted to reject the test. The tech then said that I would need to have my eyes dilated if I rejected the test, and I agreed to that. Then, she handed me a form and told me that I needed to read it, as I was sitting in the dark without my contacts in or my eyeglasses on, in order to reject the test and opt for dilation. Later, when we returned to the exam room, I was asked to sign the form, again, without my contacts or glasses. It seems to me that asking a patient to read and sign a consent form without their contacts or glasses, in a dark room, is ethically dubious. It also seems like really shady sales practices to make a test with an additional $45 charge the default, when a no-cost alternative is also available. I don't think I can trust Suburban Eye Care to have my best interest in mind after an experience like this. I sent this feedback to Suburban Eye Care soon after my negative experience and received no response from anybody at the practice, so it seems clear that my concerns are not important to them.

I've been here once before about 2-3 years ago. I'm POSITIVE they were NOT as inept as today. I…read morearrived about 30 minutes early for my appt. I give Linda my ID and medical card. She asks for my referral. I'm thinking my eye dr's referral. She says no I need a global referral. Mind you I scheduled this appt over a week ago. So i should have been told this. I thought it was covered under my vision insurance. Linda says, "Well you didn't talk to me so I don't know." I respond with "I don't work here. So if no one tells me to get a global referral, why would I know?" She repeats that it's not her fault. She tells me the biller says my options are: 1. To wait until 9am and call my Primary for a referral. 2. Pay out of pocket $340 and get reimbursed once the referral is received. 3. Reschedule 1. I could have wasted my time sitting 45 minutes for my Primary Dr to open. Then ask them to rush a referral over when they require 24-48 hours notice. But why reward this office for ineptness??? 2. I could have paid the $340 on my AMEX, and wait for this inept office to reimburse me. I mean if you can't inform a patient to bring a Global Referral for an appt, why would I subject myself to possibly being out of $340. 3. Reschedule with them? Nope b/c if everything I've stated. Linda was unapologetic. But, she wanted to take scans of my ID and insurance card! No way!!! Both her, the receptionist she said I spoke to and the biller should be FIRED. Dr Zuckerman has a plaque for being a Dr of excellence. Too bad his staff doesn't follow his example. They ABSOLUTELY WASTED MY TIME! I'll have to now find someone else.

I came here today for an eye exam, it was my first time here but it's where my husband goes and he…read morerecommends it. I used to see an ophthalmologist in Birmingham, but our insurance doesn't cover it and it's a little bit far of a drive now for me anyways. I have a condition where my eyes are cone-shaped; because of that, Visionworks recommended me going to a specialist. If I constantly have to go to this place and the specialist, I probably will not go to this place, but we'll see. I thought the eye exam was thorough and well done. Our insurance covers $300 for frames so I ordered some new glasses, my current ones are probably five years old or older so I definitely need a new pair. I was already in the area so I arrived for my appointment a bit early. My husband arrived five or 10 minutes late one time and they turned him away so be aware that they are pretty punctual. My guess is because I think they just have the one doctor for eye exams. They had a nice selection of glasses as well, if you're looking to get new glasses. I would return to this location, but I will admit I missed my old ophthalmologist and the nice waiting room, etc.

But just today I had the worst customer service experience I've ever had from a health care provider. Apparently, this branch of Visionworks has undergone a total personnel turnover. The previous office staff used to be extremely helpful and the former optometrist there, Dr. Lavine was the most thorough diagnostician I've encountered in almost 60 years of wearing glasses. I made an appointment with the new doctor but left before seeing her because the current office staff is not only incompetent, they are cavalier about customer service. If they aren't interested in making things convenient and pleasant for a repeat customer, I will take my business elsewhere.

My first impression? He was on some type of stimulant. Hyper, nervous, couldn't look anyone in the eye and very hurried. He asked me about things that were clearly in the file. Which told me he spent no time looking at my chart before entering the room. HIs hand was literally on the door handle to exit almost the entire time. I was at the office for an hour and he was in the room for maybe 5 min. He argued with me. Told me everything I knew for the last 40 yrs was wrong. He didn't allow me to finish sentences or thoughts before interjecting and finishing my sentences. Finally I stopped asking questions because it was evident he didn't want to be there. I was asked if I wanted to schedule an annual appointment. I declined. He may be a genius. I don't know? His bedside manner detracts more than enough for me. Based off his behavior and treatment, it is this reviewer's opinion this doctor does not see his patients as customers and has the typical big headed ego, and medical entitlement attitude that prevent many medical providers to acknowledge they are also service providers and we are also customers. If I had to pay for this service out of pocket, I would have asked for a discount for poor service. Of course doctors know their income is guaranteed through insurance which does not motivate some providers to see patients as customers or provide good customer service. My advice to the doctor: Slow down, see less patients, you have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Spend more time LISTENING! And don't interrupt! Ironically I can find the same feedback on here stemming years. This assisted in sealing the deal that this was not the doctor for me. Don't enable and keep doctors like this in business. Go somewhere else, unless you like being treated like a paycheck and not a person.
