We started in Mommy & Me group classes which were fun and beneficial for us both, and then she graduated to private and partner lessons and is doing GREAT! If my son talked Becka would splash him hard in the face until he couldn't speak because he was choking. They won't let you watch or interact with your child. This isn't to help the child focus on the teacher, it is because their method is grown-ass women bullying small children. On the last visit, he kept saying he didn't want to get in the pool because he did not feel good. She told him he had to. He backed away and squatted down like he was going to puke so I walked up to talk to him which is against their rules. Parents are not supposed to watch or interact. Amanda came over and said if he was going to leave now not to bring him back. (This struck me as really weird because their paperwork contains many aggressive rants about how the whole pool has to be shut down if a child pukes in it so you will receive heavy fines.) We had 3 more visits paid for. When I asked for a refund she said they had a zero refund policy. I ignored red flags in the beginning because the wait had made me feel that Seahorse was amazing. The long waitlist is a result of the lack of swim classes in Bend and their poor administration. read more

I have three children - baby through 6th grade. Amanda and Bekah have worked with them all. I have been equally impressed with their technique with older children as I have with the plan for getting babies ready to swim. Both Amanda and Bekah love their jobs and love the children they teach! My children swim beautifully, confidently, and safely. I know the business model can feel restrictive for some, but the same-time-every-week plan is so easy for us to manage and keep track of. Their water is the cleanest I have ever been in, but that comes at the cost of lessons being cancelled sometimes because of accidents. The only thing I wish I could change is being able to watch the lesson, but I have been with Amanda and Bekah first in 2018 and again starting this year and I trust them both without hesitation. Our experience at Seahorse Academy had been nothing short of amazing! Amanda and Bekah are some of the most knowledgeable and encouraging swim instructors in their field! Their facility is inviting and has plenty of toys, color paper + crayons, along with books, a chalk wall and jungle gym to keep kids entertained before and after their swim lessons. They hang the kids art all over once done coloring it's very sweet. They have lots of changing stations for the parents and kids with privacy curtains as well if needed. It's warm in there at all times and so no one is cold when getting out. We have been with them for a couple of years now and both my kids attend. One since they were 6/8 months now 2.5 and the other started when they were 1.5/2 now 4 and they LOVE going to swim! If they could run up the ramp to greet their instructors they would but they need to walk for safety They have excelled in their lessons and their confidence has blossomed in the short/long time we have been there! The kids reenact their swim lessons in the bath with their toys and it's so cute! They love jumping into pools when they get the chance! The instructions are very happy to see the kids and are so loving and kind, and yes they push the kids to get them to that next level. They know what your child is capable of in the moment (including swim buddies) they are there and would never think of putting their safety at risk, after all that's why they are there to help save lives. I love that once we had one kid locked in for lessons (water babies) our second who was a little older needed private lessons (which weren't available at that time) was put on a waiting list that ended up being a pretty short wait for us was then added to the Seahorse family! If you have one kid in and another waiting to get in , it's nice that siblings have some priority to attend when they have openings come up. As far as payments are concerned, it's easy. They put out an envelope on the front desk when payment is due and you can pay via Venmo or check. Simple as that. They have $75 annual fee which I wouldn't see why they wouldn't to maintain everything. If any classes are cancelled on their end we don't get charged for them. If they have time and room for a make up class that week they will most certainly offer it! When signing up their schedule is limited and they mention that right in the beginning and you able to put you top three days and time slots that work for you and they will try their very hardest to get something that works for you and your family. Remember you are not the only family they are doing this for, you are one of many that they want to make happy and make something work for your schedule because they want you there! We love it here and as a gentle reminder the staff is small, they have two main instructors one or two in training and finally someone now to help with cleaning and laundry etc. (That's another beautiful thing is that they supply towels, lotion, and wipes ). They do not have someone at the front desk at all times and as that may be frustrating to some they do get back to you when they can! I personally have had wonderful communication with them. They are straight forward people/communicators. They are not sugar coating people and they don't need to be. That does not mean they are not loving or caring or compassionate people. They are! They are slowly growing and are able to delegate more! They are doing a fabulous job and I'm so happy we get to be apart of something so beautiful in our community Once more, remember behind every business especially a small business in your own home town are people like you and me. They have personal lives outside of work and we need to have grace for them. You never know what someone is going through and so please try to look outside yourself and provide patience for what you might not know. Having a go with the flow attitude about things that are out of your control will benefit you in the long run, no matter what situation it is applied to. Oh did I mention they will send pics and videos of your kid in the pool every now and again showing their progress and just plain cuteness! I could go on and on about other things and events that they provide and more about my experience there but then I would be writing even more of a novel than I am now. Both my kiddos (2.5 & 1) are in swim lessons at Seahorse and have been taught by both Miss Amanda and Miss Bekah and we are so happy with every single one of our interactions and experiences with the school. My 2.5 year old last summer (at the time he was 2 and had a year of lessons under his belt) could jump off the dock at Elk Lake alone, flip to his back, kick till he found the ladder and climb back up all on his own - parents were always on the dock supervising and ready to jump in if needed. My 1 year old has been in lessons for around 5 months and can flip herself over and float on her back. Both my kids love lessons and enjoy going every single week. Sometimes classes are canceled due to illnesses or high chemical levels but I always receive enough heads up via text message as to not come in and lessons canceled on their behalf are never charged. I personally really appreciate Miss Amanda's awareness of the chemical levels as my 1 year old has severe eczema and all other pools burn her skin but the Seahorse pool never bothers her. Water safety is the upmost concern and Miss Amanda and Miss Bekah teach it wonderfully. My 2.5 can be very wild and impatient and has on very rare occasion (3 times in 1.5 year timeframe) not waited to have his coaches permission to jump in the pool but every time this has happened he flips to his back and floats while his coach watches over him and then they move him to a safe space where he can stand and they talk to him about how his actions were not safe. This to me is a hugggge positive because toddlers are impulsive and this could be a real life situation and he knows how to save himself. I absolutely recommend Seahorse to every parent. My husband is from Hawaii and growing up no one he knew took swimming lessons (parents just taught their kids) but I have never been a strong swimmer and did not want that for my children, especially because my kids are huge water lovers and we do make the trip to Hawaii often. After 1 month of lessons for our oldest, my husband thanked me for pushing forward with the lessons and he was loving seeing not only his abilities grow but also his confidence and love for the water grow. read more

After reading some negative reviews, I felt I needed to share our awesome experience. We started seeing Miss Amanda when my daughter was 6 and my son was 4 1/2. I just wish we would have found her sooner! When my daughter was 2 we started going to Mary McCools swim school, worse decision ever- it traumatized my daughter so much and I still have mama guilt about not stopping lessons sooner. A couple years later, we found another lady, she was very nice, but she still could get my daughter to trust her or put her face in the water. My husband would even get in the water to make my daughter feel safe with this new instructor. Because swimming is such an important, life-saving skill, I was determined to keep at lessons. But still not much progress... Then we heard about Miss. Amanda!! It was a long wait BUT so worth it!!!! Within a couple lessons my daughter's face was in the water and she looked forward to seeing Ms. Amanda every week! My son started lessons as well and loved her too! We have been with her on and off then for over 5 years now. Sure she's had to cancel on us from time to time BUT she gives a us grace when we have to cancel (my daughter gets sick a lot). Ms. Amanda has been through a lot and keeps persevering to keep her swim school going because she loves her kiddos and I admire her for that! We've been with Seahorse Academy for 4 years. We've had all our kids in their swim lessons, including one of our kids who has autism with limited verbal communication. We tried community pool classes previously, and though our kids learned swim skills, they found the group experience more intimidating and less engaging since the instructor's attention was divided. Growth felt slow. Even though the classes accommodated our son with autism through having 1:1 special-needs helpers, the inconsistency of aides and instructors made it challenging for him and us, so we took a break for a season. It became stressful for all of us, and he wasn't gaining much skill in a group setting. Four years ago, we had a summer vacation planned that would involve a lot of beach time and swimming, so we felt the urgency to get our youngest ones water safe! They liked being in the water, but didn't have any basic safety skills mastered yet despite prior group lessons. We found Seahorse Academy, and thankfully, a couple spots opened up not long after being on the wait-list, and we have done private and semi-private lessons regularly ever since Seahorse was at the Bend golf club. Amanda has been so kind and encouraging and welcomed all our kids, including our son with autism. It was a relief to see her patience and care for him. She got to know each of our kids, met them at their level and kept lessons fun and engaging while also guiding them to gain skills and confidence. Our older kids did the swim team once they mastered skills, and our younger ones continue to take private lessons. Having the same instructor each week who knows them has made a big difference in our kids learning and maintaining skills. Thankfully, Seahorse's location on Greenwood has been more convenient for us, too, and we appreciate Amanda's attentiveness to keep chlorine levels safe and the pool clean. There's always something fun for my kids to play with or engage in while they wait their turn for lessons, plus changing stations, bathrooms, and a shower. My son has been attending swim lessons at Seahorse academy for about a year and a half. He started in the water babies class when he was 1.5yrs old and once he completed that we moved into private lessons. We only go once a week, as that is what fits our schedule, but I am very impressed at the skills he has learned in that time and it is very reassuring to me that he is gaining comfort and confidence in the water. He always seems to have a good time during the lessons and I appreciate the pictures and videos that Miss Amanda sends showing me the new skills he has learned! Irresponsible and dismissive. Amanda missed two of my grandchild's classes and made no effort to reschedule or refund . She claims to have a waitlist of one thousand plus . What if a quarter of those supposed waitlisted children lose 50 dollars in payment ?Does not seem fair does it ? I will say I enjoyed the blow up sea creatures that decorated the pool area with my grandchild . Still blow up sea creatures are not enough when working with families . I had until now excused Amanda's behavior believing she was experiencing some personal issues. Now that I see missing class is a habit for her , and she has no remorse , I can only feel disgust. The arrogance she displays as she apparently puts away hundreds of dollars a month of unearned income is an embarrassment really . Our little group alone was at least five babies at two missed classes each (50$ Per person ). The "wait list " ( though this could be false information) she claims to have is not the equivalent of a happy customer . It is a group of unknowing parents intending to enrich the life of their child . I hope Amanda will think about the experience of others in the future . this place is great until you ask for your money back. had my child signed up for a class that started in January- only had two classes before a building issue (wasn't their fault) closed them down for three weeks. Amanda the owner enrolled everyone for the next class starting in February. This didn't work for my family so I emailed Amanda asking to enroll my child in a class for a different month. her response was "I'll never remember with everything I will just give you a refund" that was fine by me. I gave her my Venmo information expecting to get a refund right away. (as we were emailing back and forth within a few minutes). Knowing she was dealing with getting the pool up and going again I gave it two days and I checked my Venmo to see if she had refunded me- i realized my Venmo had been hacked so I emailed her asking if I could pick up a check instead. I got no response from that- I again being understanding gave it a few days before sending a follow-up email making sure she got my message about Venmo. Again no response. I called and left a message asking if I could stop by the next day for my refund. did not receive a call back. I stopped by and the swim instructor informed me Amanda the owner was not there and she could not give me a refund as Amanda is the only one with access to the books. I was told she would be in the next day and that she would let her know I stopped by. after still not hearing from Amanda I decided i no longer wanted to send my child there for swim lessons after feeling ghosted. I sent another email to Amanda letting her know I wanted my money back and my membership deposit bak and would be stopping by the next day for it. I got a response back right away how her child had been in the hospital and her business wasn't a priority and to not bother stopping by as she would not be there. i informed her I understand having a sick child and would instead come in three days later to give her time. No response. I again went into Seahorse Academy three days later for my refund to find out it was not there. the swim instructor said she was told it was communicated that Amanda is still dealing with a sick child and wouldn't have my refund. the later part was not true. I finally thought I found a solution of giving her my MIL's Venmo for her to send the money to. It took me filing a police report to get a response from another employee who sent my MIL some nasty messages (after the police finally got ahold of them) to get my refund. My daughter has been going to swim lessons here for almost two years now. She has gained so much confidence in herself and in being in the water. We have worked with Amanda and Bekah as swim instructors and they have both been fabulous! They text me videos when safely able of her accomplishing new goals in the pool, they encourage her, and they keep her safe. I have never once worried about her in the pool with them. They make sure the water is clean and safe every time she goes in which is very important to me. They also respond in a reasonably timed manner to any email or text message I have sent. For being in the pool and being their own office staff I have never waited long to hear back from them. They are also very prompt to letting me know if the pool isn't safe or if someone had an accident in the pool and I need to reschedule or skip a lesson. Seahorse academy has been such a great experience for all my kids. We have been there for almost 3 years now, experiencing the Water babies class, private, and semi-private lessons. Amanda helped one of my kids overcome her fear of water, spending extra time with her to build trust. The water babies classes were not only FUN, they teach life-saving skills right away. By 9 months old, my kid could fall in the pool, turn over and float at the surface completely unaided. The payment system is easy to Venmo or use a check each month. Anytime classes had to be canceled by an instructor, we have been refunded. When my kids were ready for a swim buddy, the instructors have worked hard to find them each a great buddy to swim with taking skill and personality into consideration. The pool doesn't smell overly chlorinated like so many pools, and it is heated so the kids are always comfortable in the water! Amanda and Bekah have always treated my kids as their own. Our daughter took life saving swim classes here starting when she was 6 months old and again when she was 3. She has LOVED her lessons here! The instructors have been nothing but kind to our family, even to the point of holding two weekly spots for our two kids when our third was born and needed to be in the NICU for multiple weeks. They held both their spots for us to be able to come home and help them get back to their fun normal routine which included swim classes. They help our kids be brave in the water which has led to both our one year old and three year old be confident swimmers! We've had many people comment on their confidence in the water. The reason the wait list is long is because not many pools offer classes as effective as these. As a child, I took similar swim classes living in Southern California where everyone has pools and those classes have saved mine and my brothers lives and made us confident swimmers as adults. I highly recommend Seahorse Academy to all my mom friends! When we started at Seahorse Academy my son (age 3) would not put his ears in the water without a melt down. When he started with Ms. Amanda he was on the timid side and didn't always like to try new things. We had been at another swim school in town for 4 months and dipping his ears in the water for 3 seconds was as much progress as we had made doing a 30 minute private lesson once a week (he refused to blow bubbles, put his head under water and float on his back). Within 3 weeks (one lesson per week of 15 minutes) Ms. Amanda had my son floating on his back (with her support) for 30 seconds. I couldn't believe it, it was truly amazing and I was so thankful we had signed up. We have been there a little over a year now and my son is so confident in the water. He jumps off the edges of the pool and comes up floating on his back unassisted. He can swim from platform to platform and absolutely loves the water. My daughter started with Ms. Amanda a few months after my son (she was age 1 when starting) and we have had the same wonderful experience with her in the water. Our kids absolutely love Ms. Amanda and Ms. Bekah and going to the facility (there are plenty of toys/activities to entertain the kids before and after swim and we often show up a little early or stay for a bit afterwards to enjoy the space). Lessons have been cancelled but it is always for understandable reasons, and we are often offered a different lesson time that week if a lesson has to be cancelled. Also Ms. Amanda is always understanding if we have to cancel a lesson due to a sick kid or vacation. Ms. Amanda truly cares about each of her swim students and she is an unbelievable teacher. I take no pleasure in writing a negative review but myself, my wife and many fellow swim members experienced awful interactions with the owner who paid our club rent to teach toddlers. She took full advantage of the situation with ridiculously long hours of 10-7 pm, multiple instructors with sometimes 2 toddlers per instructor and literally took over the pool and SO rude! My wife had similar grief and, in addition, they allowed anyone in the family of kid to take full advantage - one time there was a family/friends of 7 people - from one toddler - taking up the small locker room, tiny jacuzzi, the one table around the pool, etc. Other swim members were pissed too and I just stopped going. Got the great news today that the Seahorse Academy is no longer offered at the Bend Golf Club and this is only meant to be a head's up to ANY club or private situation where this person tries to move her "Academy". She does ride a broom tho so her job opportunities are not limited to just swimming... read more

We swam with Seahorse Academy for 9 months. My son is almost 12, and high functioning autistic. He loves water, but hates to get his face, ears, and head wet. They were successful at helping get his head wet with a swim cap, and his eyes under with goggles. He is still learning basic swim skills for sure. It would have all been OK, and we would have continued on... except my kiddo had an experience at the end of his last lesson which left him feeling truly broken. My son states that he was tired mentally and physically from the lesson that day. He was also still tired from a cold he had just gotten over. He felt just done. I heard some disruptive noise from the pool (they keep the music up fairly loud so I couldn't understand the conversations), and parents also sit at a level where they cannot view the pool. He wanted to be done and he said the instructor told him, "if I did not behave, she would push me underwater and step on me" and then she did. My son, like I mentioned, is on the spectrum, and is just understanding metaphors. He knows very few! He honestly believed that when Bekah said she was "going to put her foot down about behaving," she was going to put her foot on him when he was put under water to get a ring. It was the combo of that misunderstanding, and being afraid and feeling disrespected b/c he was not prepared and able to take a breath before going under. It does not matter the length of reasoning or reassurance, he never wanted to go back. We worked with our private behavioral specialist that has known Tavin for quite some time now about this new fear on the morning of the lesson. He was in a very negative emotional space regarding returning to lessons. His therapist suggested he go and just hang his feet in the water for that day as a way to rebuild trust with his swim instructor which I proposed very nicely to Amanda. Instead, Amanda accused me of letting another adult fill his head and letting him believe that he is in charge. Lots of lengthy exchanges from the swim school. She felt it was ridiculous and a "waste of time." She also expressed that I was causing 4 different problems by suggesting this and laid them out for me. We will never go back. Not b/c I wanted to be right, or don't think there are still skills my son obviously needs in the pool. It is her total lack of any compassion, unwillingness to listen to our concerns, and her inability to learn or grow from something she may have not expected. Talking to other former members this is a response that is typical. The belief that she explicitly knows every in and out of every situation and kiddos trusted in her care. Condemning and lecturing intent and mistakes regarding parents...and even specialists too. There is going to most likely be a comment about "pushing through", and undermining instructors, and all the things we needed to do. In the end I am the Mom, she is the instructor. My child needed to feel safe in her care and he did not. read more

I really wanted to love this place , as there are so many good reviews. However, I am severely disappointed with the unreliability of the instructor. I understand the shortage of staff and everything going on because of the pandemic, but I believe it would be fair to refund or make up missed classes especially when it is at fault of the instructor/owner. Instead I was told I was "out of luck" because I didn't want to pay for a second month after I was charged a different price ($108) then what was listed on the website ($80), along with a $75 year membership that wasn't mentioned until you signed up. Regardless of the "hidden" fees, I was excited about my daughter learning a new skill and it would give me peace to know shes safer in the water but unfortunately out of 8 classes we only had 6 and our last one was some young girl who seemed to be really shy & didn't really know what was going on?? I have now tried to contact Amanda at least 4 times about making up the 2 classes (she said I would if she had room and you can see in the picture below she does in fact have the room) or potentially getting a refund but again super unreliable so no response. There were multiple other parents in my class who were upset with her services or lack there of. Don't waste your money. Seriously it feels even worse even it pertains to your child. But I guess "having a rough week" makes it okay to steal from parents. read more

I hate to do this but I have to to get the word out that this is the most unprofessional, manipulative, terribly run business I have EVER done business with. Yes, swimming lessons were great, but everything in between was not. Threats in emails (as seen in the pictures I included), multiple canceled lessons and swim team practices with no refunds, screaming at my kids during swim team when I am not there (that I witnessed when I came to pick them up early & the teacher did not notice I came in), bullying staff who act as if they are the shit when they are definitely not. The owner and her enforcer are the most petty, unprofessional, insecure people that I have ever met that's run a business. Her emails are written poorly, threatening me for not paying ahead - which I clearly stated I would pay the fee that I owed. She bashed her instructors and wrote emails about them that nobody doing swim lessons needs or wants to hear about how someone did her wrong. They probably quit because she's a terrible boss. She also has bashed her customers (poor business tactic if you ask me) and I'm sure she will do it to me too but everyone needs to know the truth. Poor communication. Never received confirmation of signing up for classes, called right away and for multiple days and many times to see if I could change, confirm classes, or cancel the class. And emailed her staff. The night before I received an email for the class the following day. I called Amanda and finally had to email her. Her only response "bummer! I didn't see any messages from my staff. Unfortunately all other classes are full at this time." Well this isn't how I've ever been taught professionally to do business. The least she could do was give offer to give me my $40 back, I literally called immediately. There was no co formation that I was scheduled for the class, just money being taken from my account. You can really tell that Amanda has a background in Education. She has such a gentle approach and really strives to know each child as an individual. Swimming can be really challenging for the little ones (and my 4 year old has been taking lessons since 20 months!). It was such a nice change to see my son smile in the pool.
