Trying to travel with a family of five is not as easy as it seems. It's nice for the three kids to have their own space and for the parents to have their own space as well, right? The Sea Gate Inn located on Ocean Boulevard and Second Avenue was the perfect spot for us on our two day beach vacation in St. Simons Island, Ga. I wasn't sure what I was booking and the $202 per night cost (midweek) seemed a little too good to be true. But, the photos seemed accurate and the reviews were pretty good, so I went on with the booking. The five of us arrived a little early for checkin (around 1pm) and Joseph who was working the arrivals let me know it might be a while until we could get into our room. No problem, IMO. We were prepared to wait it out on the beach, which by the way is on the other side of the road - about 200 yards away. I had been on the beach for about 45 minutes when Joseph called me to let me know our room was ready. Met up with him, got the keys, got the baggage cart and unloaded. This is not a hotel room, it's a very nice condo unit with full kitchen, washer and dryer, which is key at the beach, and a lovely bedroom and bath. I could go on, but trust me when I say that the Sea Gate Inn will definitely impress you with it's easy to navigate location to the beach and dining. The centrally located pool is a nice plus as well. Can't wait to go back.

Such an unexpected pleasure! The view, cleanliness, location, decor were all wonderful for a seaside small hotel! I look forward to returning soon.

Someone else might complain about a leaky faucet in the room's kitchen sink but that is reportable and fixable. The front desk, kitchen and cleaning staff were all pleasant. They have a bright area for breakfast and a lounge for people to hang out in. The breakfast selection looks like the typical offerings in other similar hotels and yet when I tasted the omelets (typically dry and tasteless)-- they were soft and tender! The one bedroom room was nice and spacious. The possible downside is that it is near the airport. Having said that, we have not heard anything during the night.

The pool wasn't cleaned until Friday, and most of the breakfast items on during the week were cold or stale. The front desk attendant during the week was not friendly and seemed more focused on her phone than the guests. They advertise s'mores from 6-9 PM, but she didn't put anything out until someone complained -- and even then she only set out a single tiny square of chocolate per kit. It's a small thing, but if a hotel offers an amenity, it should be done properly. The gentleman working Friday night handled it the right way with two squares and was actually friendly. I also don't think they shampooed the carpets since being built, there were stains on our room carpet & when I walked to together ice & came back to our room the bottom of my feet were black. Overall, the stay was okay, but the service and attention to detail were disappointing for a Hilton brand.

Location, location, location. If you're looking for a hotel on St. Simons Island, you can't beat…read morethe location of the St. Simons Inn by the Lighthouse. It's located directly across the street from the historic lighthouse and museum. It's close to the beach, pier, and many popular shops, restaurants, and bars. Everything is within walking distance. This is an old and quaint hotel that feels almost like a bed and breakfast. It's a "condo hotel" where many of the rooms are owned by different people. Therefore, each of the rooms is unique and no two rooms are alike. Some rooms are nicer than others. We stayed in room 102, which is right next to the front desk, office, and lobby restroom. If I had known this, I probably would have selected a different room. The door, walls, floor, ceiling, etc. do not insulate sound well, so we heard everything. We heard people checking in, checking out, walking through the hallways, turning on the sink upstairs, turning on the bathtub/shower upstairs, and most of all, people opening and shutting the door to the office next door. One morning, while getting ready, I was able to clearly hear an entire conversation of two people who had stopped to chat outside our door. Our room had basic amenities. We had a small kitchen area with a sink, microwave, and fridge. There was no closet, but an armoire. I think many rooms were like this. There was a sticky substance on the floor in front of the kitchen sink that was there when we arrived. It was never cleaned during our stay. There were also chocolate chips underneath our bed. The bedspread seemed a bit tattered and musty. The furniture in the room was generally worn. My allergies acted up during our stay inside and I'm not sure what it was (e.g. dust or mold). I visited other rooms and they were not like our room. They felt bigger, brighter, and cleaner. They also had better views. I recommend booking a room on the second floor. Our room only had a view of an adjacent slanted rooftop. Basic rooms start at about $175 per night after taxes and fees. This is expensive, but you are paying for one of the most prime locations on the island. There was cable TV, but unfortunately no HD. There was free Internet Wi-Fi and it was decently fast. No password required, which was nice. The cord on our phone was about to break at one end, so if I did not hold it in place, calls would be extremely staticky. Cell phone reception is poor at the hotel. My friends and I had AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile and none of us had more than 1-2 bars. The signal gets better outside. Outside, there's covered parking, which is a plus. There's also a small pool. Inside, the lobby is small. The front desk has a water dispenser. Over our weekend stay, the dispenser ran dry twice and wasn't refilled. Coffee is available too. Continental breakfast is served between 7am and 10am, but I didn't get the opportunity to try it. The breakfast area is tiny. During my stay, I often thought of what Anthony Melchiorri of Travel Channel's Hotel Impossible would say. The staff was very nice and polite, from the front desk folks to the housekeeping ladies.
