This is a free aquarium with a suggested donation of $2 per person. It is really tiny and many of the exhibits were missing it's sealife. They must have been hit hard with Covid. The highlight is the touch tank where kids could touch everything! My daughter loved it. Wish more of the exhibits were open.

Cute little museum in Downtown Poulsbo that's FREE to visit! We had family visiting from out of town with small children in tow, so it was a perfect stopover while exploring Downtown Poulsbo. It's run by the Western Washington University, which has a satellite campus around the area. There's a big tide pool area where the volunteers were super friendly in letting my baby cousins touch a star fish and look at the crabs. Very beautiful with the sea anemone. Some tanks had typical aquarium fish like the blue tang and clown fish. They even had a tank with 2 octopuses and a halibut swimming around. It's not a big aquarium - I think we spent roughly 30 minutes here? Still a great place to visit while in Downtown Poulsbo, and many thanks to the volunteers who run the place!

Neat little museum that is FREE! Volunteer staff on hand to answer any questions. There is designated parking and clean bathrooms. Museum has a small tide pool where the kids can touch and hold the sea life.

If you're looking for a cheap place to take the kids while in Poulsbo, then look no further. There's no set price as it's a donation based education center, so give what you see fit. Just don't be that jerk that keeps walking and doesn't contribute anything. When you arrive, you're met by a giant octopus near the marina. It's a perfect place for a photo op as kids typically climb on it... plus - it's a giant freakin' octopus! I think that's pretty cool on its own. Through the main door is a water enclosure full of different marine life. The best part about it is that the kiddies (and adults) are able to reach in and touch everything that's inside. Everything is safe, just make sure they're being gentle and don't actually pick anything up. Kids were getting a kick out of the hands on interactions and some had to be pried away by their parents so they could move on to whatever they had going on that day. There are a few jellyfish and other sea creatures on display, including a giant skeleton of a whale that washed up on shore a few years back. It's pretty cool and it's interesting to see how big those creatures are up close. The center has docents on hand to answer any questions or to provide any other info you might want to know. A big classroom sits in the back of the building that gets used for school field trips and other activities. I thought it was pretty cool. It didn't take long to see it, but you could definitely kill some time and keep the little ones occupied if you have nothing else to do!

After closing down for several years as a result of losing funding, the marine center is open again and free to the public. If you are ever in the small, charming, waterfront town of poulsbo, make sure you come into the marine center located right off the main touristy street and explore the native sea life of the area. Yes it is quite small but the 5-6 tanks that they do have are filled with the most interesting crustaceans, sea anemones, and fish that you could easily get absorbed for a long time watching the life in those tanks. At the entrance of the center is a large shallow tank for anemones and starfish that you can touch. Be careful though because the water is kept so cold that your hand will go numb after a couple of seconds! The volunteers who staff the center are very friendly and eager to tell you about the life and biology of some of these interesting sea life. I came out of it having learned many interesting facts!

We've always wandered through the tanks, enjoying all the splendor and color they have to offer but have never made the commitment to start a tank. That's about to change since my husband got creative this Christmas and got me a starter tank and carte blanche to get it going! We found ourselves once again enjoying all the splendor at the Shark Reef but this time, we got to "talk tank" with Eric, the owner. He has a great passion for the hobby and it comes across in his vast knowledge of every aspect of the salt water tank. Although I got a starter tank, the deal we got at Shark Reef has us returning everything and starting fresh and complete! The selection of fish, rock and coral is great and we were assured that if we want something they don't have, they'll be able to get it for us (within reason of course)! Oh, if you buy a 5 gallon container for $15 you get R/O water for free! I'm excited to begin my new hobby and I feel super lucky to have this great little gem of a store to support it!

The tanks are much smaller than what you'd see at a bigger aquarium like the Seattle Aquarium, but they had some interesting creatures on display (like sculpins and crabs). The volunteers were also very interactive with kids and they had a pretty big tide pool tank where you can touch some creatures. When we visited they even had a tank of live squid, something I never really get see at the bigger aquariums. A few things to note: - Admission is free but they do ask for donations... they can accept cash but they also have a card machine for donations as well. - They keep track of capacity, so there may be a line to get in. Since it only takes 20-30 minutes to explore people shuffle in and out quickly. - Most of the aquarium displays are in the building out on the pier; this area is primarily outdoors so prepare for the cold weather! The indoor building is very small and mainly has displays of jarred sea creatures and scuba info. - There are restrooms onsite near the entrance. - No dedicated parking on-site, so you will have to look for parking in the area. There is a lot across the street but it tends to be busy with people fishing/boating, otherwise there is some street parking next to the playground area. If you happen to be in the Federal Way area for food reasons, I recommend stopping by this little aquarium to get more out of a visit! They're also located on the waterfront, so it makes for a nice walk around the area.

There is microscopes to view small living creatures, skeletons of marine life, information on scuba diving, among other informational ideas. Then you walk out on a pier and into another building that has aquariums full of amine life like starfish, crabs, fish, etc. The best part is the two touch tanks that allow you to feel what some of the marine life feels like. Plus the view off the pier is beautiful to watch people scuba diving or look for starfish.

We didn't get lucky with everything--the lion was taking a nap and completely out of sight--but honestly, that's part of the experience. The kids still had a great time seeing the giraffes and exploring the other exhibits. What really made our visit stand out was a small moment that turned into something special. We stopped by the VR area near the carousel and met Catherine, who was incredibly kind and welcoming. She asked what we wanted to watch, and my daughter ended up chatting with her and mentioned her birthday was coming up. Out of nowhere, Catherine surprised us with a couple of carousel passes and a little birthday clip. It completely made my daughter's day--you could see how excited she was, and that kind of genuine kindness sticks with you. We come here pretty often during the summer since we're members, and experiences like this are exactly why we keep coming back. The staff really goes the extra mile. If I had one small suggestion, it would be to add more hand sanitizer stations, especially around the food areas and restrooms. It would just make things a bit more convenient for families. Overall, we love this place and appreciate the effort they put into both the animals and the guest experience. Looking forward to many more visits.

The lanterns are spaced out well, so it never feels crowded or rushed, and there's a nice rhythm to the walk where you naturally slow down and take things in. Some sections feel calm and quiet, others are more colorful and playful, and it all flows really well along the zoo paths. I grabbed tacos from one of the food spots and a cappuccino from a coffee stand, which was exactly what I wanted on a cold evening. Simple, warm, and easy to enjoy while wandering. It's the kind of setup where you can snack, stroll, stop, and keep moving without breaking the mood. Overall, Wild Lanterns 2025 feels well thought out without being overdone. It works just as well for a relaxed solo walk as it does with friends or family, and it's one of the few seasonal events I'm genuinely happy to make a repeat tradition.
