Tip: The Jets Gear store has Sea Bears merchandise.
Last week, I saw my first Winnipeg Sea Bears basketball game. The team plays at Canada Life Centre. It's the same venue that the Manitoba Moose (AHL) and Winnipeg Jets (NHL) play their hockey games when they are at home.
The Sea Bears belong to the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL). Frankly, I knew nothing about this league and the Sea Bears until I looked at what events were happening in Winnipeg when I was in the city on vacation.
The CEBL was founded in 2017. In 2019, six Canadian teams began playing in this league.
Winnipeg got its franchise in 2022 and became the tenth team in this Canadian league. 2023 was the team's inaugural year in the league. It has been doing well attendance-wise. I witnessed how the crowd gets into the game and how fans love supporting this team.
Ticket prices are reasonable. I didn't break the bank getting a 100-level seat.
I watched the Sea Bears play against the Saskatoon Mamba. The Sea Bears won. I had a good time.
What made this game exciting is that there's a magic number or score that each team needs to hit to win the game. It was 107 in the game that I saw. I'm not sure how this number gets conjured up. but it does add a lot of excitement and interest.
The Sea Bears have two mascots. Churchill is the male mascot, named after the city in Manitoba that has a lot of polar bears. Churchill has a girlfriend, Nanuq, who is the other mascot.
After the game that I went to on June 30, the audience was treated to a fireworks display to kick off Canada Day. It was enjoyable and safe.
I had a great time. I'd take in another Sea Bears again again when both the team is at home and I'm in Winnipeg.
