There are loads of other 5-star reviews and I agree with everything in them. Scout's House is obviously a labor of love that just happens to be a business. The individualized attention to your pet is truly unbelievable. Detailed personalized reports, video tutorials for your pet and starring your pet, thorough pre-briefing and de-briefing with every session. I want to add creativity and determination. Lots of people think they have a stubborn dog, but Andrea let me know my dog truly was a grand prize winner. Elfie went on strike multiple times during every session, but she met her match in Andrea who never gave up figuring out ways to get Elfie to use that right forelimb. She even put a hair scrunchie on Elfie's snout so she would instinctively bat it off to work that range of motion. And instead of being frustrated by my stubborn dog, Andrea just loved her all the more for it. In spite of Elfie's resistance, she always walked a little more each week. And now, several months after Elfie graduated from PT, she is racing around like a puppy, going on longer walks and playing with more joyfulness than before her injury and surgery ever happened. For that matter, I should mention Elfie was referred by Lenity just next door, where Dr. Carlson performed the surgery on Elfie's shoulder. We took our 6-year old Portuguese Water Dog, Mila, to Scout's house for several months after a bilateral TPLO surgery. Everyone at Scout's House was wonderful! They were very knowledgeable, provided effective exercise plans, and great instructions for us on how to work with Mila at home. Mila has great range of motion, and she's rapidly building strength in her back legs. On top of all of this, they kept it fun - Mila was always excited to meet the team and go inside. We have had such a positive experience with Scout's House! My chihuahua just graduated from physical therapy after having double knee surgery (TPLO surgery) and has progressed so well. Each dog has a session on their own with no other animals present, and it's incredible how the staff motivate your pet to do the exercises. They send you videos explaining their techniques so you can do the exercises at home. We went once a week for 6 weeks after surgery, then did a few more sessions once every other week, with daily PT sessions at home. The entire team here were so kind and knowledgeable and they kept the surgery team (at Lenity, also fabulous) updated on my dog's progress. Sessions were $149 after an initial consultation which I believe was $249. I could not recommend them more highly! read more

Scout's House really helped my puppy get over his somewhat mysterious injury. It started with the very thorough review of his present & recent past:, recent mri & x-ray, vet records, communication with his regular vet & specialists, etc. At the actual appointment, he was thoroughly examined by both the vet & the certified canine rehab therapist, who had been a physical therapist for humans. And I was included in each step-I was part of the team! From all this information, a plan for his physical rehabilitation was set. After just one visit, I was given a very detailed (in a good way) at home program. They even came with video of the therapist doing the exercise with my dog so that I would know exactly what to do & what to expect from my guy. From just those exercises, my guy has made so much progress! Everyone there seems to really care about their job & the clients, animal & human. Although it was not cheap, it did not feel like a money grab as I've previously experienced. The price was fair for all the support & assistance my dog & me got. At the other place, they kept dragging and suggested to extend treatment while I couldn't see any significant improvement. But at Scout's House, you can see big improvement within the first month and they really care about your dog's condition. I typically only find time to rate food but we had such a great experience with Dr. Krista, I had to give her some love. First off, she's awesome. Super personable, great with pets(obvi) but really spends time to get to know you and your pet. Breaks down all of her observations for the common person to understand the issues and recommendations. We couldn't be happier with our experience. Our pup was limping for several months and after seeing multiple specialists and different vets, we got some many different recommendations we were totally lost. While our pup was diagnosed with luxating patella, Dr Krista helped us rule this out as being the main cause for limping and advised us against surgery for the short term (another vet immediately quoted us $16k for a surgery). So not only did she save us a ton of money, she was able to pinpoint the cause of his problem was injury related. She performed some physical therapy wizardry and recommended some excercises - so far it's done the trick. Fingers crossed! Her evaluation fee is a little higher than most places but we found it to be money well spent. They also have a really long waitlist, so take the first appt you can. read more

Scout's House is amazing - I feel so fortunate to have a facility nearby that provides physical therapy/rehab for injured, sick or elderly pets. I brought my dog to Scout's House when she starting having traction issues on hardwood floors. The initial consultation was done with a veterinarian and physical therapist working together to assess muscle density, strength, range of motion, etc. The current course of treatment is a combination of PT visits in conjunction with home exercises. As a result, my dog is getting stronger, more comfortable and more stable. Now, my dog hates water. HATES IT. She'll jump over a puddle when we're out walking rather than dampen her feet, and will only dunk a paw briefly into the kiddie pool I bought her when tempted with the choicest of treats. She's also easily spooked by new stuff in general, so the fact that the therapists at Scout's House have managed to get her walking on a treadmill in water up to her belly is amazing! In fact, at our visit today the therapist reported that she went in the tank under her own steam for the first time. Good dog! Everyone at Scout's house is skilled, professional and kind to both the patients and their human chauffeurs. I am so grateful to them for helping my much-loved canine pal (and me!) through this. Owners must leave during 45-minute therapy sessions to allow the animal to focus on the therapist. At the end of each session the therapist emerges with the pet and updates the owner on what was done that day, observations and recommendations for home exercises. One more thing in the long line of wonderful things about Scout's House is Scout's Fund, a non-profit established to provide financial aid to a variety of animals: pets from low income families, shelter pets who need PT to become adoptable, active and retired military and law enforcement K9 units and assistance dogs. I plan to add Scout's Fund to my list of charitable contributions, and I hope some other pet-loving Yelpers will consider doing so as well. Wanting all the best for my dog after TPLO surgery I was referred to Scouts House and if hindsight were 20/20 I would have fought harder to get in at Sage or even driven further to Oakland and Holistic Veterinary Care where I had a great consult before having surgery. I think that with the uptick in economy that businesses like this are thriving more than they have in 10 years and sadly we lost several in the late 2000's. I have been to other rehab for my other dog so I felt I knew what to expect. Sadly my expectations were far too high for what Scouts could deliver. So coming to Scout's is a 3 hour ordeal for us with the drive. Never did anyone at Scout's take that into account nor work with us to try to schedule a routine for us. More frequently than not we had to work around Scout's and miss work or other activities to do so. But we did commit to the dog so we were really trying... By visit 9 after some setbacks we finally were from 3 minutes in the treadmill to 7 and by visit 10 we were to 11 minutes - I digress - this was a truly minimal improvement overall. Let's just say that at no time did the schedule of the visits and the type of advancement we needed get put into the picture holistically. More of a wham-bam sort of approach, I felt lost in the commotion of just trying to get an appointment let alone to stop and question their approach. I always hated that I was not allowed into the treatment area and instead watched her from an outdoor aquarium view (when that wasnt too distracting). I have always had the opportunity in the past to learn and watch and participate as well as collaborate rather than drop off/pick up and go. There was no real desire to get us into a plan, to work as a team. What we needed was to take some time off. Let the setback heal. Seek out healing sources locally and then return for more therapy. I did finally figure that out only to be told by Scouts that to finish her uptick they could get us in in 3 months for an appointment. Seriously? This dog is an established patient and your inability to communicate effectively caused us to be where we are now! So I tried one more time to give them another chance saying if you can get me in for 5 weeks in a row I will make the time and financial commitment and we can all see her through to the finish line...yea uhhh no - so much for "Team Fxxxx" Overall: we were lost in the commotion and while they said they were on our team - at the end of the day they aren't because they cannot get her into a schedule to finish out her therapy which was completely mismanaged and underdeveloped. If you do go please be prepared to push them for what they do and how long they do it. It seems that people with means and location are just happy with what they get there but in the grand scheme it is not a well run business for the patient. Blah blah blah about the best for our patient. We never heard anything constructive other than do this exercise and we are not sure about her for the majority of visits and now when a public complaint is lodged a lot of "we do the best for" and "we tried"...blah blah blah. You did not do what was best for her at the end of the day. You do what works best for the patient in front of you for 40 minutes then on to the next read more

4.75 stars - minus a quarter because they are so expensive... ...but the price is worth it, seriously. Regrettably, we are former boarding clients of Scout's. They recently discontinued boarding services and now focus solely on rehabilitation and therapy. However, here is my review of our experience... I started boarding the 4-legged love of my life at Scout's primarily because he has bad knees and as a neurotic (but loving) pet owner, I am a fanatic about requiring that his play activities be supervised vigilantly while still receiving lots playful people attention. Scout's was the only place I have found in the Bay Area where group play is not an option, because boarders are usually also recuperating or recovering from surgery. But because their operation is small, they have the staff available to check in on my guy and take him out frequently. 24-hour attendance and 24/7 pick up/drop off was also a big plus. It was a big bonus that my vet is Mid-Pen right next door so come hell or high water I knew that my dog had access to the best care if an emergency arose. We did day care for long days at work and boarding for out of town trips. I would get email updates every 2 days while away which helped put my mind (and guilt) at ease. Since my dog has bad knees, I scheduled some hydrotherapy sessions while he was boarding. Their rehab facilities are impeccable. I've never seen such a facility, or one with such high standards for animals before. This place was even nicer than MY shoulder rehab clinic! Now that we no longer have Scout's I am looking for another facility that will take just as good care of my corgi companion. if Scout's ever resurrect's their boarding services, we'll be the first reservation! read more

I can't say enough about how amazing Scout's House has been for my dog Fred. I brought him there when he was very young on recommendation from his orthopedist at Sage to treat his almost torn shoulder. Due to the excellent therapy he received from Krista, he did not need to have surgery, and was able to lead a normal active routine including retrieving which he loves. Most recently, I brought him back as an older dog for some tune up rehabilitation of the same shoulder, and he healed very quickly with Krista's amazing touch and knowledge about what he needed. Do yourself and your dog a favor and check out Scouts House for your dog's therapeutic needs. I found Scout's House a little too late for my Koby. Koby had to have his left front leg removed because of cancer. As predicted, about three weeks after the surgery, Koby was managing quite nicely on three legs. My vet did not recommend therapy but I wished he had. Because Koby had to shift his right front leg over for balance, I'm convinced it caused a realignment of his spine which eventually resulted in a nerve impingement. The nerve impingement led to a crossing of his hind legs which made it impossible for him to stand up. He was able to temporarily uncross his hind legs to pee and poop but he had to be carried most of the time. It was not easy as he weighed 70 pounds. Had I known of Scouts House, I would have started his therapy much earlier and he might still be alive today. The therapists, Andrea and Krista, are so caring. They not only love what they do, but they love doing it for your pet. The cost is a little high ($83 for a 45 minute session) but they do have "buy 10 get one free" card. I wish they structured it so that if you came in for 10 sessions, your next one would be free. $830 is a lot of money to put up at once. They have wonderful boarding services for special needs dogs as well as non-special needs dogs. There is someone there 24/7 so you can drop off or pick up your dog any time of the day or night. Because Koby was a special needs dog (tri-pawd) and is 70 lbs or larger, the cost to board him was $110. But, I dropped him off at 8:00 am Saturday morning and didn't pick him up until 5:30 pm Sunday evening. They didn't charge me for any extra day care. If you think about it, it averaged out to $55/day. The time to get your dog physical therapy is early on when the problems just start to appear. The longer you wait, the more sessions it will take to repair the damage! read more

We went to Scout's House for physical therapy and accupuncture/chiropractic therapy. The younger non-vet helpers that worked there were friendly, but the attending vet was not at all knowledgeable or attentive. A vet is required to be on duty, but she didn't actually do any of the work with my dog, she just sat there and read a magazine and ate whenever we were in there (at different times of the day, different days of the week), while the non-vet helpers did the work. Worst of all, we had an extremely traumatic experience with the accupuncturist/chiropractor there, and no longer trust her. An apology is long overdue for her role in the incident upon the untimely death of my dog. Instead of Scout's House, I recommend SAGE physical therapy in San Mateo and Campbell. If you look up "Scout's House" in the dictionary you should see the following definition; "absolute peace of mind for the pet owner who is heading out of town because this place is filled with caring, knowledgeable staff in a facility that is clean and quiet." I used to be an officer at a large pet care facility in California. The biggest reason I left is because of the lack of care that was given to the dogs and cats. There are some shining stars with regards to staff at this other place but the facility is huge and does not facilitate proper care. Scout's House does it all. I have a 15 year old German Shepherd. He is everything to me and I get very anxious when traveling out of town. From the moment I filled out the profile to the moment I picked him up, I was at ease. The staff is very professional and compassionate. They understand what you are doing. They understand that you are placing your pet in their care. Your pet is not a number trying to round out occupancy figures. I felt like my pet was #1 even though there were other boarders there. I have a very very old (22 years) deaf and blind dog who needs to be boarded whenever I go out of town. I only feel comfortable leaving her at Scout's House. Staff are compassionate and knowledgeable. Our beloved Missy was suffering multiple strokes and she had lost her balance at age 13. She cannot sleep well and night and kept turning and tossing. The pain seemed to be from nowhere yet it was bothering her. Scout's house offered a valuable consultation and developed a customized treatment plan for Missy. The electrotherapy, physical therapy and water treadmill had helped to strength the muscles so that the bones did not have to work so hard. On a bi-weekly basis, Dr. Janet Dunn from Scout's House performed acupuncture and chiropractic manipulation on Missy. With a combination of supplements such melatonin (3-4.5mg per night), Missy was able to sleep through the night without tossing and turning. We used very little pain medication on Missy until she finally left us at age 14.5. We thank Scout's House for improving Missy's quality of life and walked with her in the final stage of her life. read more

This is only the second review of *anything* I've written in my life, but in the case of Scout's House, not letting others know about my wonderful experience there would be a crime. I recently had to be out of town for three weeks on family business. That meant finding a place to care for my beloved 13-year-old Australian Shepherd, Jackson, who before this had basically never been away from me. Besides being an older dog, he has some medical conditions that need watching. I'd gone into Scout's House to buy a dog-loving friend a gift (they have some great things, and not expensive) and discovered they'd just opened a boarding facility to complement their highly respected animal therapy center. Lisa, the founder of Scout's House, just happened to be there that day, and gave me a great tour of both the boarding area and the very impressive therapy area and equipment. To make a long story short, I decided then and there that Jackson would stay at Scout's House while I was gone. For what I thought was a very reasonable price per day, Scout's House: * Provided superb care tailored specifically to Jackson's needs and wants * "Gave" him a staff member's puppy as a companion when he was stressed and lonely his first few days there, which totally did the trick -- special props here to staff member Julie and her wonderful terrier mix rescue, L'il Bit * Emailed reports to me every other day (some with pictures!) on how Jackson was doing * Fed Jackson custom meals and snacks to mirror his usual routine at home * Phoned me personally and promptly if they had a question about Jackson's well-being or medical condition * Gave me the peace of mind that comes from having 24/7 professional staff, an on-call vet, and the kindness and compassion of folks who truly love animals I hope the community will do everything possible to use Scout's House services and support this wonderful facility -- they are truly, truly one of a kind. read more

We are seeing improvement in our arthritic 11 year old dog. She even chased a ball today! Despite multiple medications+ supplements, she was still uncomfortable, and our vet suggested Scouts House. The initial evaluation was extremely comprehensive and included a vet,a therapist, careful physical exam and observation of her gait. They are super nice and patient. They give us exercises to do at home, just like human PT. I'm not sure how I feel about dropping her off. Wish I could be in there with her. Maybe they find it too disruptive. They did wonders on my 11 years old Gordon Setter after he had a spinal cord embolism and was paralyzed (back legs). I never knew that there was Physical Therapy for dogs. Most people probably don't; and I'm sure many would think it was "over the top" for a dog. But when our 1 year old lab/pit was diagnosed with a torn knee, we sought out alternatives to the traditional TPLO surgery. We did this for several reasons. 1. surgery and the long recovery time was going to be physically traumatic for him (and us). 2. The success rate of TPLO's is not very encouraging (The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association: This study found that only "...10.9% of the dogs treated with tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) regained normal leg function subsequent to surgery...") And many dogs repeat the injury and need it again! We were fortunate to have Petplan insurance prior to his injury, but the cost of surgery is $3000-$6000 per leg! After favoring his injured left leg, we were told that he needed surgery on the right as well! We tried limiting his activity, acupuncture and cold laser therapy... all of which helped, but surgery still looked inevitable. After a year of this, we were referred to Scouts House for PT where we purchased the discounted 10 pack of hydro-Therapy. If nothing else, we were told that this would shorten his post-surgery recovery. Our guy has had so much improvement as a result of Scouts House kind work, that he runs like a quarter horse now! Who knows, we may be able to avoid the pain and cost of surgery after all! I had almost given up hope. This is a fear-free facility as well; which is so rare in the animal kingdom. Not only are the folks at Scout's House consummate professionals, but they couldn't be kinder. They were wonderful with my big Newfoundland, encouraging him onto the hydro-treadmill and always ensuring he was comfortable and confident in the exercises he was to perform. Within even a couple sessions, I felt that he was growing stronger in his hind end, where he was having his issues due to a neuropathy. Plus, he really enjoyed his sessions. Always happy to walk right in and get started. But what I really wanted to share was that when my boy was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and we had to discontinue his rehab sessions, the staff at Scout's House offered heart-felt condolences, even shared personal stories of their own experiences/losses with the disease, and volunteered to be a source of information or just an empathetic ear should I ever need either. read more

I can't thank Scout's House enough for the work they did with Henri, a young cat with cerebellar hypoplasia. He's the sweetest guy at Nine Lives Foundation, a no-kill cat shelter. The staff was instrumental in helping us get special funds for physical therapy to improve Henri's use of his hind legs. Because of his therapy, Henri's mobility is so much improved. He can run to the food bowls and stand up to eat. Staff has given us suggestions for exercises we can continue. We all appreciate his improved quality of life. This place is nothing short of amazing. My German Shepherd was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and possible DM (a horrible neurological disease) at two years old. I was devastated by the diagnoses. I was referred to Scout's House by our dog's trainer, who is a retired police officer and knows of Scout's House because of the miraculous work they do rehabilitating police dogs that have been injured in the line of duty. After my first consultation at Scout's House, I was overwhelmed with relief by the attention and care given to my little girl, and the prognosis for improvement. She is now halfway through her physical therapy sessions and is already showing improvement in strength and flexibility. The therapists here are incredibly knowledgeable and loving. I know that some have commented that it is expensive, but I actually think it is quite reasonable given the state of the art therapies they offer (including a hydrotherapy treadmill and laser treatment), and their prime location in Menlo Park. I am so grateful to Scout's House and all of their wonderful therapists (and they are ALL wonderful). read more

I ordered a sling for my dog on line with them. long story short , they charged me 48.00 more than another website that had the same exact thing and they charged me 6 plus dollars for 2 day shipping that was 4 days ago and it still has yet to show up. I was referred to Scout's House last year when my then-13-year-old chow shepherd (who'd had surgery for a torn ACL 3 years ago) became horribly lame. After a trip to UC Davis (a godsend if ever there was one) and discovery of arthritis along the neck and spine as well as nerve damage in his left shoulder, Santa Clara Pet Hospital recommended Scout's House for follow-up physical therapy. He's been going there almost once a week since September, and the improvement in his comfort level and flexibility and balance has been almost miraculous. Everyone there has been unfailingly professional, kind and thorough at their jobs. My "boy" is doing so much better than he was last year -- happy, hungry, eager for walks (although we're both a little slower than a few years ago) and as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as a 14-year-old dog can be. Love, love, LOVE this establishment and everyone there. What a blessing for both of us! read more
