The good thing is that you can stop at the Ashuwilticook Rail Train hiking/Biking Trail for some stunning lake and mountain views along the way Buy your tickets online in the morning. I hear it does sell out sometimes. Our train was not full. Plenty of space. The train ride lasts about an hour, it's a slow ride. There is commentary detailing the reason for the train, and the booming economy that built the local area. The train is 1950s style, could be a little cleaner, but fine. Quiet trip, good for a short interesting thing to do. We enjoyed it. Conductor, cashiers and all the staff were very nice and answered questions. There's a small museum/gift shop, but very little else in the immediate area. Afterwards we went to Public a cool restaurant nearby, food and drinks were great.

The woman taking care of our train car was also not very friendly. You're paying for a 30 min ride straight up the tracks and 30 min ride back the same direction. They did provide a couple snacks - crackers / cookies. I would never recommend this to anyone. Just find a nice route to drive because it will be way more exciting!
