Scotty's is a family-owned restaurant that's been around since 1950. It's survived even COVID to serve its customers the classic fish and chips along with shrimp and frog legs. The food is good and plentiful. Yesterday was the first time we went there for lunch. I ordered the fish and shrimp combo and a side of fried onion rings. It was a bit on the greasy side, but still tasty. I'm thinking of going back for a solid plate of shrimp. It was so good. The service is excellent. Our waitress was super friendly and served us well. Scotty's has a charm of a typical 50's fish and chips place. Not too much has changed and a number of us are fine with that. I've always known Scotty Simpson's for their claim of fresh Halifax cod flown in daily, but today was a massive disappointment. We ordered three meals for three people: the perch combo, the famous fish and chips, and a shrimp and fries meal. The only person who walked away happy was the one eating the shrimp. Take a look at the photos I posted. You can see from the outside how flat, dark, and greasy the batter looks--it completely soaked up the oil. When you pull the crust back, the inside is even worse: a thick layer of raw, wet, doughy paste because the frying oil wasn't hot enough to seal it. I even tried saving it in the air fryer when we got home, but it didn't help at all--it just baked the stale oil smell deeper into the meat. The fries were old and completely flopped, the coleslaw was way too sweet and watery, and the rolls were bone-dry on top while literally being cold on the inside. We tried giving some to the dog, and even he took one bite and walked away. The issue is clearly in the kitchen management. The older master cook wasn't back there today; instead, a young guy was cooking, and he simply didn't know how to control the oil temp or handle the prep details. If you go, look past the counter and make sure the senior cook is actually the one working the fryers, or you're going to waste a lot of money on a doughy, disappointing meal. read more

This place is practicing deceptive menu prices. I ordered the 3 pc fish and chip dinner. Wife ordered the one pc fish and chips. My dinner when served had one normal size and 3 spoon size pcs of fish. I had already asked Sandy to not let that happen again because we had that same existence a few months back. Detroit staple of fried fish. First of all, CASH only. I am not sure how long this landmark been around, but I am glad this small business is still open. Big pieces of cod, fresh, hot, crunchy on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside. I took a one day trip from Cleveland to Detroit to see the Van Gogh in America exhibit at the DIA; after the museum I wanted to grab a bite to eat before heading home and the Yelp reviews for Scotty Simpson's caught my attention. Located North West of downtown near I-96 in a bit of a run down neighborhood you find Scotty Simpson's on a corner with its own lot across the street. I arrived around 2:30 in the afternoon and the place was pretty quiet. There is a nice old school dining room with the open kitchen in the back. Decor is comfortable, casual and has the worn in look that is authentic and real. This is a nice hole in the wall place. The menu is not huge, rather it seems to be concentrated on the things they do well and have done for a very long time. I ordered the Fish and Chips and they were nice enough to substitute the onion rings for the chips. The server was friendly and helpful, although she was busy taking down the Christmas tree and the decorations. The meal came up fairly quickly hot and fresh. The 3 pieces of cod were amazing with a very crispy batter around very fresh mild white fish. The onion rings were also outstanding light and crispy with sweet onion inside. The slaw was very nice, lightly dressed and with a nice crunch. On the side was tarter sauce, lemons and a roll and butter. Overall this was a really good traditional fried fish meal expertly prepared. If you are looking for a really good place to get some excellent food in a fun relaxed atmosphere at a reasonable price Scotty Simpson's is well worth a visit. This business raised prices due to various costs. I understand that. However, they are cutting their portion sizes of fish. A fish dinner is supposed to have 3 pieces of fish. When I picked up my order, it had 1 decent sized piece of fish and 2 very small pieces which did not even make up one piece. It was like barely getting 2 pieces. I did reach out to the business via messenger but they have not had the courtesy of responding. So much for caring about their customers !! There used to be a fish place in Dearborn that used to be packed all of the time. They raised their prices PLUS cut back on portion size. Pretty soon the place wasn't packed any more and they closed up. Wonder if that's the future for Scotty Simpsons if they continue to NOT care about their customers.
