I am so very happy with Grand Master Scott Halsey as an instructor. As a ninth degree blackbelt in Kenpo his experience and understanding of how to properly teach karate is very evident. He is patient with new students like me, yet doesn't let me form bad habits and always helps me improve, even in basic forms and techniques. Mr. Halsey is also great at motivating kids, with both grace and disciplined style, and maintains a respectful and positive environment in the classroom. Additionally, all the instructors have been excellent, each one bringing unique perspective to help me round out my skills. I now regularly attend classes 4 days a week and just can't get enough! Both of our boys (8, and 12) also study under Mr. Halsey! A BIT OF BACKGROUND I never would have thought that at 48 I would be starting my karate journey, but when our youngest son (now 8yrs old) started with Halsey Karate a little over a year ago, I soon had the itch to give it a try myself. So, this past spring I put on a gi for first time! I hoped karate might be a fresh way to connect and bond with my son, and also a great outlet for me to not only improve my physical strength and flexibility but also as a form of brain training and an outlet to help manage ADHD. Now, after about nine months of experience, and having earned my orange belt, I can confidently share that my studies of American Kenpo Karate at Halsey Karate provide ALL those benefits for me, and much more! I have never studied any martial art and have only recently begun familiarizing myself with other martial art forms. They all have some great strengths, but more I study, the more I appreciate and love American Kenpo Karate. Many of my friends and acquaintances have studied jiu jitsu with is very respectable and looks challenging! For me however, I just did not like the idea of spending so much time rolling around on the mat tied up with another sweaty human! I enjoy American Kenpo because it blends several important arts, like traditional karate, kung fu, and even some judo and ju jitsu, all into a series of techniques that challenge me greatly, yet as I begin to learn the basics I can I understand how they are extremely effective for self-defense. Kenpo techniques are a perfect blend of science (physics) and art. It speaks to the head and the heart! Finally, I really love how many people started Kenpo at a later age like me and ended up fining so much success and fulfillment. There are several students just like that at Halsey Karate. The upper belts are always extremely patient and helpful with the newbies like me, always reminding me that they had the same struggles. I get plenty of support and encouragement from everyone there. I am convinced that more adults and professionals like myself could benefit greatly by studying Kenpo Karate. My kids, spouse and I have been attending classes here for 4 1/2 years and I can't speak more highly regarding Mr. Halsey and all the teachers at the school. He has the right balance between toughness and heart that you look for in a karate studio. You can tell how much he loves what he does and what a fanatic teacher and influence he is on his students. Mr. Halsey's Kenpo Karate place is a lot of fun. The instructors are great because of the amount of attention they give to you for you to improve as if you are family. Don't be stupid since i was, i was called sissy boy. This place is dedicated to forms, body workouts, and overall a great place to make friends. My daughter has been coming here for about a month now and I can't say enough good things about Scott Halsey and his team. Even if you don't have a child or yourself are signed up here you have to come check it out. All the students are completely captivated by the instructors, they are firm, yet fun and boy do they know their stuff. You can even find youtube videos. The whole process is a growing experience and teaching kids to self discipline themselves, respect and to strive for goals. My daughter the second time she came didn't want to keep coming because she (was 5 at the time) wanted and thought it was going to be about battling people and learning moves on other people. I made her stay with it and she LOVES going now. She recently got her first yellow stripe on her white belt and was so excited and it made her feel good about herself. That is priceless! read more

Bought the $95 outfit from the business had it hemmed. First two visits were cut shorter than the time I had paid for. Then instead of private lesson I paid for he had my son practice with another student which is not a bad thing but the entire time the kid that was supposed to be "teaching him" is just kicking him in the nuts, that is not productive or teaching him anything. There was no supervision, he went off outside. The whole thing was a rip off and there is an odd smell in the building like mold or mildew. read more

To be fair, I took classes here when I was in 5th and 6th grade, but it was bad ass. Instruction is great, and classes are offered frequently. I think it is a great place for kids. read more

Ive been taking my 4 year old here for the past 6 months. He loves it and so do I! The owner, Scott, and his staff are very knowledgeable and patient with the little ones. As the kids get older they're not only taught kenpo, but responsibility, self control and respect for their teachers and others. There is not much patience for goofing off or disrespect, which I love. They are awesome roll models for the kids. I'll be signing my daughter up too, when she's old enough. read more

I was very disappointed. I had heard and read such great reviews, and know that he has been a long standing member of the community, and when I took my child to the class, it was very undisciplined. After several lessons I was still disappointed. It seemed that the kids could goof off a lot, then were rushed through the training. It also seemed to me that the kids got passed onto the next belt based on effort rather then execution. I find that to be a huge problem, with martial arts, they should learn how to do it correct, not fast and certainly not for bragging rights. Again, very disappointed and have since found a better instructor for my expectation level. read more

I started three of my Grandsons with Scott Halsey. David (who has lived with me since he was a one year old.) started Kenpo at 3 years old. He was a purple belt when I took him out of Halsey's and put him into Redding Jujitsu Academy on Bechelli, at 6 years old. David was getting to many injuries under Scott Halsey. Also, Scott Halsey charges (the normal dues, for their tests, their belts, private lessons etc.) RJA charges only monthly dues and your annual AJJF (American Jujitsu & Judo Federation) membership once a year. Yes, David had to earn his gi, he had to start as a white belt and is now a Senior Green Belt. He is now 16 and is in high school which takes a lot of his time, but changing him from Kenpo to Jujitsu was the best thing I have done for David. The students are taught only by black belts & Professors. Higher color belts assist the instructors. This is the best of the best - in Martial Arts. Both for the price and the quality. read more
