This is such a cool children's museum. Our kids had so much fun with all the exhibits and all of them were focused on learning. All the exhibits are thoughtfully laid out and cover many different areas of science. They also have exhibits geared to many different age ranges so both are toddler and school-aged child could enjoy. There is street parking available. You're able to bring your stroller inside. It's not like a museum kind, instead experiment kind, and my son loved it, they have small science experiments stations set up, so kids gonna like it, it's interesting for adults too, very well maintained. A fun children's museum with plenty of sensory activities for the curious kid. Museum also has a play yard, a greenhouse and a cozy cafe with a play area. We visited the location on a Saturday and it was not crowded. Can easily spend 2-3 hours here, and cost is $20 for an adult plus kid. This museum is a refurbished old feed mill and cotton gin built by German immigrants in 1880, featured unique mechanical innovations to process grain, and has maintained its landmark architecture. Johnson City is part of the Texan German belt, has an unpretentious old country feel, and deep rooted heritage. I've had this museum on my list for a while now and it did not disappoint. My kids 8,7 and 5 all throughly enjoyed the museum. We spent 4.5 hours here and no one was bored. It is filled with interactive and educational exhibits and they give each child a passport to scan through out the museum as a sort of game to try and collect all of the badges, the kids enjoyed this built in challenge. The virtual reality ride was a big hit, the pendulum tug of war was enjoyed by all and the coding station was so fun! All in all I'd definitely recommend you come check out this gem of a museum if ever in the hill country!! read more

I took the drive from San Antonio to Johnson City to check out the Science Mill with my granddaughter. She had an absolute blast! There were many interactive things for her to discover, she loved creating her avatar and I too learned a few things. The staff was kind and readily available; there was even a military discount. What a gem of a place for visiting with children! We came here for a field trip during a homeschool day and the kids had a blast! There's so much to see and do here, they can easily spend hours. We signed the kids up for the homeschool lab and I really really appreciated being let in to watch as a parent. I got to observe them learning about the solar eclipse as they did a few hands on activities. My kids loved watching the 3D movie, tinkering with all the experiences and exhibit inside, and our favorite part was spending time outside! What a cool place, I highly recommend checking it out, particularly for elementary aged children. read more

Snow in Texas is rare, that's why when I saw it was coming to the Science Mill I acted fast. Our family had a blast visiting the Science Mill's annual Snow Fest Day. The kids were ecstatic to have the fluffy white stuff to play in. They had snow ball fights, made snow angels, and built forts. Then after playing in the cold we had hot chocolate to warm up with and hot dogs. We loved that they had food trucks onsite to make the event easy to keep everyone happy. We loved it! We went on Museum Day so there were a bunch of people there, not all of them were polite while waiting to do whatever activity we were on, but we just smiled and moved to the next. There are so many great thing to do and see here, we couldnt,' imagine being upset having to wait 30 seconds for something. It was educational, it was fun, it was very well organized and labeled and it was pristinely clean. It had indoor and outdoor fun as well as a 3D movie. We missed the Cafe which closed an hour before the museum (makes sense, just wish we thought to check) but farm to table sounds great and I'm sure that would have been terrific too. A little science that wasn't expected in Johnson City. We had to make a detour of our weekend since the state park was fully booked. Decided to take the Little one to the science mill even though he's still too young to appreciate the animals and gadgets. So basically it was Mom and Dad's excuse to play with kids toys. Found the Mill to be packed with fun chemistry, biology, games. You can create an avatar of your kid to meet with you at each exhibit. The entrance helps you line up in a socially distanced manner and the workers meet you with some hand sanitizer spray. We glove up inside so when we touch the exhibits we aren't passing around covid. Got to play with man made wind, put together some chemical molecules like phosphoric acid, met the tortoise and her babies in the Greenhouse that cycles water from the fishtanks to feed the plans and herbs growing!! Played with the bubble maker and maze outside. A lot of things for little kids to play with and enjoy!! Would recommend it for those with children!! They also give military discounts! Johnson City is becoming a great short getaway for the Austin and San Antonio areas. The home of LBJ is now host to a fantastic children's museum. This past weekend they had a snow day with over 20 tons of snow and food trucks. The museum is science and technology focused with great exhibits for the 5 to 12 age range. There is a separate building with a theater and toddler play area. The outdoor area has a metal ball machine that is super cool! It has tons of contraptions for the kids to mess with. The museum also houses lady bird cafe with salads, soups, and sandwiches. If you head this way make a day out of it. I wish I had left earlier to enjoy more of the town. A short walk from the museum is the childhood home of LBJ. It's inspirational to show the kids that a small town guy from Texas became President. read more

Wow! Had no clue this existed in Johnson City!! Fun and innovative!! Cute!!! My son's 1st grade took a field trip here. It held our group of probably 60 kids plus parents comfortably. 6-7 year olds. I'd say it was a little above their heads BUT there was so much to see, touch and do- that it didn't really matter. They were entertained even if they missed the point!!!!! Lots of hands on. Lots!!!! (My point being, older kids should enjoy too!!) Big fun outdoor playscape too! I grabbed lunch at the cafe there. It was delicious!!! Really enjoyed this place. It is similar to the Thinkery in Austin, but so much less crowded, which was a relief. We arrived right when they opened on Memorial Day. We got to slowly explore each exhibit without feeling rushed. Our favorite things included the fractal room, playing piano on the bananas, exploring the outside exhibits including the pendulum, and the landscape/water sand silo. The greenery exhibit was beautiful. Would visit again! I plan on following their facebook page to see when there are new exhibits. read more

Although, due to covid, they couldn't offer their full birthday service, they went out of their way to make my daughter feel special. All while keeping safety for all in mind. Such an incredible museum for kids and adults alike. My kids are 6 and 9 and we come here a lot when we are driving through the area. I'd say ages 3-14 are ideal. Totally worth a day trip from Austin or San Antonio. Indoor and outdoor exhibits, a small cafe, 3D movie theater, so many fun and educational exhibits. They also have special events, summer camps, and a brand new aquaponics greenhouse. Don't miss the giant tortoises and fantastic ball machine outside. We are members, and I love it more than the Thinkery in Austin, way less crowded and chaotic and good parking! The staff are super sweet and you can create your own avatar to collect badges as you visit the exhibits. Your kid will love how interactive this place is. My son and niece did not want to leave here, and had such a great time playing with all the science activities. New things are added, so we are going to come back to see some of the new activities. Our favorite was the mind movement activity. The 3D movie over meerkats, also was fun. Our kiddo loves the Science Mill. There is so much to it that it will take several hours to go through a few of the interactive exhibits. The staff are the key, look for them to get you oriented.. most of the time a pile of bananas on a table are actually a musical instrument. ("Seriously," said kiddo.. who then proceeded to mess around and try to figure it out.) This is the place if you have a kid who say, for example, and I am just speaking hypothetically here.. has.. disassembled a Roku to find out what is going on inside? Set up an old baby monitor outside to spy on the squirrels? This is where they will find some interesting stuff. While it is geared toward children, keep in mind the exhibits range from toddler to teenager. the Staff. were patient, knowledgeable and available and spoke to the children at their level. They made the time to listen with understanding and to come alongside the kids as they explored the various science concepts. They worked diligently to engage kids and hook them into the coolness. (We were a group of 5 kids and 3 adults.. so we were outnumbered, but there were many many moments when caught the kids asking great questions and getting thoughtful answers. TIP: Look for those badges and tap into those folks! (Shout out to Maddie who helped my kiddo assemble an entire Knex car... You are great!) read more

We recently took a field trip to this place and it was amazing! There's so many exhibits to get the children busy all day! The only thing I wish is that there were a little bit more staff to kind of guide the field trip into certain places because it tends to get a bit overwhelming when you're trying to keep a head count of children and of course you want them to explore which is always a great thing for their brains but I think that a guided tour would be a little better than just everyone go crazy exploring at once. But nonetheless I still give this place five stars because they have done an outstanding job with science and triggering the children's minds and sparking there Interests. What a fantastic place! Well-planned educational exhibits, that are super fun for the kids. Our 3yo loves it already -- especially the topographic map sandbox -- but there are so many things she'll love more as she gets older. This is such a great little science museum! I love all the hands-on displays for kids. This museum also has some displays that are different from the usual. There is a cool table that allows you to examine a body's cause of death by analyzing it on several different levels (muscular, skeletal, circulatory, etc.). I wish the museum was larger, but what they have here has been done well. It's spotless, too, which is always a plus! read more

We have 2 1/2 year olds and I was very disappointed. I thought this would be filled with more fun interactive things they could do and it just wasn't. It seemed like the staff was really pushing the toddler section on us which was a small area for them to play (I'm talking types of at home toys stuff). I was looking forward to bringing them here to explore and have fun but it was just really lame and the staff was kind of treating us like we didn't belong because of their age. Nestled in the small hill country town of Johnson City is a very modern science museum for kids. This place was absolutely amazing! Very educational exhibits unlike any I have ever seen. Uses a TON of technology and each exhibit kept getting better and better. We could have spent all day here, and it's not that big of a place. They have movies to watch and a GREAT gift area to buy things for everyone you know. Our kids were all in love with this place, even the youngest who wasn't even 3 yet. He and grandma played in the back room (has an area more specifically for the 2 and under set) the whole time and he never got bored. We even ate our lunch at the café there and, while expensive, it was very very good. Great variety of foods. Highly recommend for ALL ages, including adults. read more
