The original Schwabacher building on Yester Street was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1889. The Schwabacher Brothers whom were Bavarian Born Jewish merchants decided to rebuilt the Schwabacher Building once again, but this time in brick. It was the first brick building to be built in the Pioneer Historic District after the Great Fire of 1889.
Schwabacher Brothers & Company was the first wholesale business in the City of Seattle back in 1869 and opened their hardware store in 1872. The mercantile store sold everything from groceries/hardware/clothes/liquor /tobacco / mining equipment/ and anything else you can imagine. They even had their in-house brand items under the name "Colonial" and "Faithful".
The attractive 5 story brick building was commissioned by Schwabachers brother in-law "Bailey Gatzert" and designed by architect "Elmer H. Fisher".
Today you can find a cafe located in the storefront lower level, with the upper floors being leased prime office space. Walking through Seattles Historic District is like being transported back in time. Live/Love/Travel !
