One of the best experiences of my life, The Schooner Heritage was an incredible adventure. Went with one of my best friends, Jim and we had a blast. This was a 3 night, 4 day windjammer sailing trip around the Penobscot Bay islands in north-central Maine. We had cabin bunks (had a sink, bathrooms were up top). While the ship has a very awesome crew, you are encouraged to help pull in sails, pull up boats, row the mini-boats to shore, do dishes, etc. I learned so much about sailing (I brought a little notebook). The food was better than most restaurants I've been to and all included in the price; one of the captains is a chef. You learn to let go and unplug a lot by doing this, it was an interesting combination of relaxing and getting your hands dirty. Saturday morning the motor that hoists the anchor and sails up broke down, so we helped raise it manually, fantastic morning workout. It was hard leaving the ship on Sunday, you form friendships with the other guests on board and mostly the crew. I can see how people make this an entire lifestyle, as I will definitely return to the seas. Make friends wherever you go and find adventure in everything you do.

The schooner Heritage docked at it's home port.

Captain Doug Lee told many interesting stories and I'm pretty sure at least one or two may have been true.

Love when the sails are lifted!!! Motor turned off, quiet, smooth ride! So relaxing. It is a beautiful ship. Lots of shinny teak. Delightful with great crew and just a few guests on board. Free parking right by dock. Thank you, Bonnie and Twig for making my sail special. Highly recommend!

We sailed…read more2x with them in 2020 and the first thing we did when we got back to Rockland this year was to look at the weather and book a trip with them. I picked an afternoon with an expected 14mph wind, so I knew we would sail smartly. I was surprised that Taylor was captaining the boat this trip instead of Twig, but his boat handling was conservative and flawless. Of coarse Bonnie was aboard to do her excellent narration regarding the history of Rockland's lime, timber, ice, shipbuilding and lobster industries and also tell us all about the lighthouse, islands, and seals we saw. Twig and Bonnie's personable adult daughter Rachel was also on board as crew. Bonnie and Rachel handled hoisting, trimming, reefing and tacking the sails as a well-oiled team. We started out conservatively with the fore mast and main mast sails both reefed, but were later able to shake out the reef on the fore mast sail for a little more speed without heeling the boat. We were able to sail near Robinson's Rock and saw that there were several seals sunning them selves there. We sailed midweek on a Thursday and there was lots of room for everybody on board. Taylor and Rachel cheerfully answered my many questions about the boat, the boat's offshore passages to and from the Caribbean each year and about local events. This was the first time sailing for the family seated across from us, but they had a good time. There was another group forward of us that pretty much kept to themselves so I didn't have a chance to chat with them, but they seemed to be enjoying themselves too. I did a bunch of small boat pleasure sailing and medium sized keelboat racing while I was at the University of Texas. I don't own a sailboat so the only sailing I have done since has been on Hobie Wave catamarans at all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean. I really enjoy chances to sail on bigger boats like the Schooner Heron. The Schooner Heron sails three trips daily from Rockport Harbor: Private morning sail, an afternoon Educational Eco Tour, and a Happy Hour Sunset Sail. Custom charters are also available on request. There is free parking in the harbor lot. Whether you have sailed before or just want to try it on vacation, I highly recommend sailing on the Schooner Heron as a solo, couple or family activity. You will have fun and be entirely comfortable with the ship and crew. They will treat you right. We're back in Rockland in a couple of weeks and will surely sail with them at least once more before heading back to Texas.

This was the trip of a lifetime! The captain, Tyler King, knows his boat inside and out and is an incredibly sailor and a wonderful guy! His awesome crew (Elias, Courtney, Lily, and Kate) were phenomenal and helped Tyler sail the ship to perfection! Their enthusiasm and zest for life is infectious! The outstanding cooks, Marty and Quinn, made the most incredible meals every single day, and they were five star! I have absolutely nothing negative to say about the American Eagle!! They all catered to our every need and were beyond kind and so much fun! We all just felt like one big family! We also were able to compete in the famous great American schooner race on July 4 and it was spectacular and exciting! What a blast! I could go on and on about this wonderful Trip we took. It was very easy to work with the staff to make the arrangements, and they made the trip happen even though they were not fully staffed for their in-season time. When we arrived the staff had taken the kayaks down to a grassy area in the park. The guide got us fitted with life vests, paddles, and spray skirts, and then it was down to the boats for some quick lessons about paddling technique. We were soon out on the water. The guide did a great level of working with our level of experience and provided clear directions about the paddle. We crossed the bay from the put in location to the Breakwater Lighthouse. While this lighthouse is accessible by walking the length of the breakwater (.8 miles) it was great fun to see it by the water. Once we got to the light, we then paddled down the length of the breakwater to a beach by the Samoset resort. The wind was blowing pretty strong from the shore, so this was a pretty good paddle. Once we got to the beach, we were able to get out of the boats for a few minutes and then we were back on the water. The next leg was a pretty good open water crossing again as we made our way back across the bay towards the shipyards. Here you get to see some of the industrial sides of the water. People who depend on the sea to make a living. There was a fishing dock where large fishing boats offload, there is the coast guard station, and then there is the marina and restaurants. Overall we were on the water for just over 3 hours. Our guide was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable about key subjects and really provided a very educational as well as enjoyable paddle. We heard stories about the lighthouses, we learned the history or the area, the lobster fishing industry and all about the ports. While Breakwater Kayak is a smaller operation than some of the others in the area, you are guaranteed to get a well-trained guide who is really wanting to make sure that you have a safe and memorable adventure.
