I wanted more for my son. I expected more of my son - public school didn't deliver, but Pensacola…read moreSchool of Liberal Arts (SoLA) exceeded our expectations. My son began struggling in 10th grade while attending a local public high school. I can't begin to tell you how many meetings we had with teachers, counselors, deans, principals, IEP and district representatives. Since he wasn't a discipline problem they kept passing him on. I soon learned my son was an experiment for a floundering system. Following a terrible semester report card, we decided to search for a private school. I was surprised to find Pensacola had so many choices. After visiting most of them, I concluded these private schools were all a one-size fits all style of student and curriculum all except for SoLA. On our second visit to SOLA, Mrs. Tarver "interviewed" my son to identify what was missing in his quest to become a lifelong learner. Finally a school administrator that was willing to get to the core of why he wasn't learning. The SoLA staff had truly taken an interest in my son reaching his full potential. SoLA taught him first; that he must want to learn. Once he learned this skill others followed, including; independent thinking, creativity, integrity and balance, he became happier and believed for the first time he could do this work. He became independent, self-motivated and the stress level in our home dropped significantly. Final thought: While our local schools are struggling to lift performance across the board, SoLA is doing this one student at a time. Teachers will always be underpaid - and underappreciated but the teachers at SoLA know they didn't choose to teach for these reasons. They chose education to change lives and the Pensacola School of Liberal Arts does this greater than anyone else... One student at a time. Congratulations class of 2016 including my son and thank you Jacqui Tarver and Travis Cummings for teaching and caring for all of these children!

RBCS seemed like a quality school - their admissions…read moredepartment made me feel welcome and made the school seem excellent academically. However, I had three problems: 1. The talent development program (presented as special education) is not special education. The instructors don't need to have education degrees and get on-the job training and seminars on specific general education topics. The only difference I saw is smaller class size (yay) and slower speed: they use the same material as other schools but go slower. The students didn't seem to get other resources including no sustained reading specialist intervention (it's only a short term intervention if staff feels it'll help). 2. Responsiveness to concerns: several administrators dismissed our educational concerns, asking us to trust their process. But their process involved much less actual educational teaching than other area schools. 3. Discipline: admissions stressed that their discipline system hasn't changed in 50 years. It showed. The system in elementary school involves a dozen or so red-letter items (in the blood of Jesus) and a similar number of black-letter (sinful) items. The discipline system is absolutely equated with moral/ Christ-like behavior. Children are frequently admonished about their "red" or "black" behavior. Lots of kids show anxiety about this. A lot of parents stated concern. My kid had daily issues over this to the point of needing medical intervention. The problems resolved when we switched schools. This was one experience - it may fit well for others. But I recommend asking lots of very specific questions before choosing RBCS.

My memory us of getting into trouble and having to stand outside in the dark hallway..(the school had wood floors then) and freaking out upon hearing shoes clomping from the distance, fearing it was Virgil Buck, the principal at the time, coming toward me. He actually found me once and was very kind to me. Of course, I had his wife as a teacher in 2nd grade and she kept me in a 'special' desk close to hers so she could keep an eye on me. I actually thrived that year. The place was so old they still had cloak rooms. I was put in there a lot by teachers. The whole place was OLD! I'm quite surprised I didn't find graffiti from my mom and dad's time! But I loved the grassy hill outside that sprouted onion grass every spring and the old oaks and pecan trees. One of the old trees is still there but a shadow of its former might. So glad certain landmarks are still around.

I'm currently in my sophomore year, and it took some adjusting to the rules when I first arrived. Understand that not every institution is going to model after your exact desires and values. PCC upholds excellence, purity, and morality where so many Christian-labeled colleges do not. If you come here with the right mindset and a willingness to persevere, you're going to be alright. You'll learn more about Christ and the Bible than you ever thought you could. Every major decision made by PCC or Campus Church is strongly influenced and/or directed by Scripture, which should be our own guide to life decisions.

Okay. Many of the reviews on here are toxic and/ or just straight wrong. Many of these people have…read morebeen to PCC in the past. As a recent graduate of PCC of '21, I am well versed in the recent college experience. First, the college itself is great. The atmosphere is fantastic and college life itself is beyond what I could've imagined. Yes, there are some teachers that are not as loving and not as compassionate as others; however, if you find the correct teachers, your college experience is great. Second, the rules are strict. As a Christian myself I find that the rules are a bit strict for my own convictions. I believe tattoos are fine, holding my girlfriends hand, and going off campus with the opposite gender is fine. The problem is the bad students will do what's wrong regardless of the rules. The rules are only prohibiting the students who just want to have a normal life back. Since I've been there, they have allowed coed groups off campus which is awesome! Overall, your gonna have some run-ins with chaperones that just don't like you, like me and my wife had while dating and engaged there. Third, if you pick the right collegian, you will have more fun then you can imagine. Picking the right collegian will help you grow so much as a person as you will meet so many new friends through that Avenue. Lastly, don't listen to some of these reviews saying that they are hateful people. The college does what it believes is right. CHRISTIANITY HAS CHRISTIAN LIBERTY! Some people don't believe tattoos are correct and some do. Are either one wrong? No! Because of Christian liberty, you are basing your life off of your own conviction through Christ. As an environment to grow in through Christ, it was amazing and I have met lifelong friends here. Please don't believe some of these post from people who were from 30 years ago or just didn't go to college here. Yes, sometimes there is some judgmental messages; however, the church is not perfect and you will not find a perfect church. One thing I hope PCC improves on is letting students go get involved with community churches. That would be such an improvement to the spiritual aspect of the college. I hope this was helpful to someone.

I had my mind made up about University of West Florida, or UWF, before writing this review though I…read moredid read the other reviews. I would say UWF earns about a 3.6, but that rounds up to 4 stars. Universities and colleges are interesting. They are a compendium of interesting buildings, campus planning, both broad and niche educational programs, a bureaucracy, a culture, a political system, a (more or less) collective personality, strengths and weaknesses, noncomformity, groupthink, and so many other things. I knew that UWF sat in a nice area among stands of pine on the northern outskirts of Pensacola. So, instead of using the public library in town, I came to visit the one at UWF. Then, I made a second trip because I found a heck of a lunch deal at the Nautilus Market and Grill! So, then, reviews will be forthcoming under separate cover for both their library and the Nautilus Market and Grill! Florida has its flagship university, the University of Florida, and the "other" school that hates it, Florida State University at Tallahassee. Then, there is an implicit "next tier" string of campuses the likes of the University of Central Florida, the University of North Florida, the University of South Florida, and this one, the University of West Florida. The big and well-known University of Florida may still have its share of partying, but getting in there these days requires more than a pulse ... far more. But, in reality, the sometimes smaller campuses of UCF, UNF, USF, and UWF serve their purpose quite well for those who are focused. They are more regional or local universities populated by a more local student population, students who want to go to those specific schools for a specific reason, and a smattering of international students who are interested in those institutions. Granted, GPAs and test scores to get into UWF aren't as high as they are at UF. However, that moniker UWF, or "U Will Fail," is sort of ridiculous. That probably refers to students who haphazardly toss their applications into the ring, get in, don't apply themselves, and generally don't give a shit. We all know that a dysfunctional dipshit can get into and through an Ivy League university and a perfectly competent and practical student who hails from the area may choose to go to a UWF because he or she wants to stick around their stomping grounds and get a decent education for a respectable price. Here's what I was able to deduce more specifically about UWF. It has about 8,000 undergraduate students. I think the ideal university has about 10,000 to 15,000 enrolled students. But, at about 2,000 per class, that beats having about 1,000 per class and everybody knowing that, for example, you once picked your nose and left a booger under the desk. Bigger and/or popular departments are business, as can be expected, nursing, teacher education, some of the engineering disciplines, and marine biology, which makes perfect sense. The arts and the sciences are also represented. The campus is definitely attractive and is spread out so, with more accelerated metabolisms, traditional college age enrollees can eat their hearts out at the cafeteria and lose those calories as they walk between the buildings in which their classes are held. Pace Library seems substantial enough and has a good feel. What appears to be the student union type building is in an 80s modern low-rise edifice and has a nice lounge, a bookstore, and the huge Nautilus Market and Grill. The atmosphere appears to be relaxed and all sorts of students seem to go to school here, and it is evidently devoid of a "one size fits all" personality. Right along with that, everyone met at the information center, the student union, the library, the Nautilus Market and Grill, and in a few departments where I asked questions was informal and friendly. I've said it elsewhere. The high pressure schools can and do bring out the best in most students. The schools with less competitive admissions profiles almost always require that the student has more self-discipline to work against that critical mass. For that reason, I'm deducting one star. I'm then deducting .4 star for a few departments in which some of the subset disciplines aren't as fleshed out, but that's just my opinion. In short, I liked what I saw of this school. It's a good place for a kid to cut his or her teeth. They can stay around their hometown or move to this wonderful area, they can avail themselves of good enough and practical curricula, and, if they do well here, they can indeed see an admissions packet from UF or some other flagship or private school for continuing their educations. As for me, my only tie to this school is that Argonaut t-shirt I bought. Hey, one can always use t-shirts.

If I had known it would be this difficult to get in contact with someone or receive responses…read moreregarding inquiries and submitted documents, I would have applied to Pensacola State College instead. I have attended two other universities, both online and in person, and this has honestly been the worst experience I've had, and it's only week one of classes. It took an entire month for my documents, which were already in the system, to be reviewed so I could be admitted even though I called every week to check up on it and they had everything. I was then finally admitted the same day class registration opened, while the systems were down. Since then, I have been unable to reach my academic advisor despite emailing and calling for the past two weeks regarding a course transfer issue. A class that should have been transferred from my transcript was not applied, which is now preventing me from registering for my next course due to a 'prerequisite not met' error. Phones and emails are rarely answered, and the lack of communication has made this process extremely frustrating. If I had more time and had not already submitted everything to the VA, I would seriously consider applying to PSC instead. It's crazy because I applied to an administrative position here in the Undergrad department when I first moved to the area and they didn't take me. They clearly need more people or better people for that matter because whoever they chose can't handle the workload.
