My daughter and I have taken two cooking classes through Schoolhaus Culinary and both were an absolute blast. Class costs vary but are reasonable for a 3 hour class that includes all of the required ingredients. I am guessing that it is because ingredients are included that the price varies from class to class.
The class space is downstairs from the restaurant Tangerine. When you first go in there are 6 large butcher block island type tables set up for all of the participants and a fully stocked kitchen. It was a little intimidating because we had never tried anything like it before. My daughter and I are also quite shy so we were a little surprised when we found out that there was a lot of cooperation and participation required with all of the participants, but it was totally worth breaking out of our socially awkward shells for the evening.
The first class we took was sushi making. We started out with making a Japanese appetizer followed by how to make different variations of sushi. We made makizushi (rolled sushi), inside out rolls, and nigirizushi (pressed sushi). We made so much sushi that evening, that we had several boxes packed to take home after. I think that the class cost was around $90 each, but for a 3 hour class, an evening of bonding with my daughter and several take home boxes packed to the brim with fresh sushi... it was absolutely worth the cost.
It was so fun in fact that we decided to take a doughnut making class a few days later. Again it was a ton of fun and we learned how to make several kinds of doughnuts; apple fritters, long johns, cake doughnuts, etc and the icings/fillings to go along with them. And once again, we headed home after ward with boxes filled to the brim with fresh warm delicious doughnuts.
If you plan to take a class, don't hesitate to book because the popular classes tend to sell out quickly. I am still trying to get in on a Thai class but the one coming up in November is already sold out. read more
