This review is two years in the making. Our son suffers from OCD. We contacted Newport Academy…read morewho said that they had the supports to help him. They did not! He got pretty much no counseling and spent his days doing yoga and mindfullness, which may be helpful for some, but not a kid with a real diagnosis. Our impression was that this was babysitting for kids who smoked pot.... Our sons school sent work that was supposed to be done at Newport with there "teachers" but that never happened. I guess to sum up... our last day the academy and ourselves reached a decision that could not help, yet they told us we coud not leave until the end of the day. We left. Turns out they don't get paid for partial days. So althought they admitted that this diagnosis was out their capabilities, they wanted us to stay so that they could bill. Stay Away! Unless you just need someone to watch your unruley child, their services are not to cure/help just to babysit!

You just want to be accepted and this is NOT how I felt. I was in this program for about 6 months and definitely had some mental issues at the time, and being here only made it worse. Of course during the therapy sessions I TOLD them this and obviously they just insisted on keeping me there LONGER (probably because it made them more money). I saw absolutely no way out, so I said some pretty wacky things (not gonna specify) in order to get me kicked out. After that I found myself with very little respect for therapy/therapists. Now, I can confidently say that i am doing so much better with absolutely NO thanks to Newport. It wasted so much of my valuable time as a young man and student trying to find a passion in life. I DO NOT recommend this place for anyone. If you/your child are actually a serious risk to yourself or others, PLEASE pick somewhere professional.

She truly connects with her clients, and I have seen them flourish as she helps them to connect with their values and take ownership over their lives. I have been so impressed with her ability to form long-term, lasting relationships with her clients. I think one of her most admirable qualities is that she is able to be direct and straightforward with kindness and understanding. Her genuine connections with her clients and colleagues show in how her practice has grown over the years. She is also committed to learning new skills and deepening her knowledge, which is essential to providing clients with the highest quality care. She cares deeply about providing services grounded in individualized, compassionate evidence-based practice and takes the time to attend trainings, read about new approaches, and consult with other therapists. I can't recommend her highly enough!

Prior to John, I had an everlasting feeling of impending doom that I could not comprehend. John listened to all of my problems while I was talking 1000 words per minute and was able to help me understand the root causes of my anxiety. After that came the coping mechanism and practices to rebuild the neuropathways to be freed from anxiety. After starting counseling with John, I have moved out to Washington, DC, gotten a promotion at my job, built better friendships and I feel comfortable in my own skin anywhere I go. While I am not free from anxiety yet, I know I am well on my way there. Every time I meet with John, I get one step closer. He truly is a breath of fresh air. Oh and did I mention that he ACTUALLY listens to you? The number of times he has quoted, word by word, things I said months ago let me know that I have found a counselor who genuinely cares about me. Thank you for everything John! I owe you a lot more than you know. If you are looking for someone who will understand you, care for you and help you move past any mental blocks, John is the man. I can't say it enough!

I had the opportunity to talk to Dr. Alisha Powell today. She suggested Chris Christo (life coach)…read morejoin us when I mentioned my dilemma (for a male perspective). Their approach felt scattered and disorganized. I was appalled when Chris stated the following: "Men are not biologically programmed to be monogamous. It's not easy for men to be monogamous. It's not something that comes naturally." This comment is sexist and chauvinistic, at best.To be clear, we weren't even talking about fidelity. I honestly can't believe someone practicing as a mental health practitioner (he's a life coach, fyi-not a therapist) said this in 2021. When I communicated to him that his statement was out-of-pocket, he did not acknowledge that or apologize for his statement. He did however attempt to rationalize why he'd said it. I reaffirmed my position, and he simply put his head down and seemed to jostle the paperwork in his lap. He did not respond. I was disappointed that Dr. Powell did not interject to educate or redirect him. She is certainly qualified to do so: PhD, LCSW-C, LCSW, LICSW. He is practicing under her license, so ultimately this responsibility falls on her. I understand that as a life coach his training is limited (6 months), but this isn't the behavior or mentality I expect from someone practicing in mental healthcare. I can assert this as a healthcare worker myself. I would not recommend their services.

After hours of searching online, we found Laurel Fay & Associates and decided to reach out because of the positive reviews. We were pleasantly surprised at how helpful the assistant, Maggie, was and how quickly she got us on Jennifer's schedule for a consultation. We were confident that we wanted Jennifer as our therapist after speaking with her on the phone for our consultation. So far, we've seen Jennifer for approximately 15 sessions. I can confidently say that my husband and I have a healthier relationship because of the tools that Jennifer provided us with. This has probably been one of the best investments we've made and we thank Jennifer for that. She is highly skilled at what she does and there are many times where I walk out of the sessions impressed with her training. I highly recommend Jennifer to anyone looking for marriage and family therapy.
