On a free night, a bunch of us decided to take a nice walk to the somewhat nearby Kreta Taverna. One upfront warning: This is a cash only place. That turned out to a bit of surprise when the bill came. Luckily, we all scratched together enough cash to pay the bill. At the same time, there are parts of the world (like Eastern Germany and the Czech Republic) where it pays to have some cash handy just in case. Also, this isn't Iceland where pretty much every local speaks English. I'm used to rolling with it and usually being polite, smiling, and pointing goes a long way. Having a German speaker around helps too. The service was super friendly, albeit a bit slow between the kitchen and the food coming out. The woman running the place was probably a family member and a force of nature. If things need to be fixed, she was the guy and was really fun to watch. The food was very good, as was the atmosphere. That allowed for a nice relaxing evening among work friends and a chance to know each other a little better.

They had Kostritzer and a Pilsner, as far as I can remember, since we ate here once while in Merseburg on business in September 2015. A variety of Greek and German fare that I only remember being delicious. The woman running the place was very friendly and I was able to help translate. If you are American, or an English speaker, please bring someone who speaks German. Also understand that they want you to enjoy your time and meal in Germany, so it might take a little longer for you to get your check.

I'm a big guy, but not huge, and I had trouble getting my legs under the table - no problem, I adjusted. I ordered the Schnitzel Weiner Art (fried schnitzel with mushrooms and braised potatoes) and it was EXACTLY what I needed. The piece of schnitzel was HUGE. Even came with a small bit of salad on the plate. All of it was delicious. They also have their drink menu on these huge bottles, along with some opinions ("Wettinger Pilsner - the best beer in Merseburg!"). I had an Alt in a bottle that was quite delicious and, of course, one of the Wettinger Pils. It was also very nice. Service was attentive, although I was the only one in there at 5:45 p.m. Not sure if anyone spoke English, as I was able to get by with my poor German language skills.
