After our walking tour, we decided to explore independently. Our tour guide highly recommended visiting the old craftsman's house to get a peek into what life would have looked like in the medieval old town.
Since 1360, the old craftsman's house in the middle of the old town near St. Mark's Tower was inhabited by the families that lived and worked in this home. Interesting to learn about the trades that helped people earn a living.
Büttner, blacksmith, cobbler and many more trades. With the low ceilings and creaking floorboards, the Middle Ages can be felt here. Each of the rooms tells the story of everyday life and craftsmanship.
The Alt-Rothenburger Handwerkerhaus is named for the civic association that is dedicated to preserving the pre-industrial character of the town.
During the revolt of 1455, artisan guilds staged an uprising. They threw the patrician councillors into the town hall dungeon and forced the council to admit 12 guilds as representatives. Like an early union.
The museum is so cute. The museum reconstructs the domestic and professional environment of craftsmen's families as it changed through the medieval and early modern periods. The furnishings, tools, household objects, and workshop interiors showcase a life shaped by guild membership and seasonal trade all located in a compact Franconian townhouse.
Take care as you climb the narrow staircases. Mind your head, the ceilings are low. The ground floor houses and showcases the workshop spaces. The higher floors have the sleeping quarters, a kitchen, and a modest parlor. I can't even imagine how many families lived together in this home.
A really cute museum. Perfect for a short stop while exploring Rothenburg.
