New Hamburg is a quaint little town in Southeast Missouri. In addition to a little school, a general store and church, new Hamburg boasts Schindler's. Schindler's has a nice vibe. It is a typical rural tavern with a juke box, pool tables, locals and great food. The burgers are insanely awesome! 1/2 pound of beef in every burger, grilled to medium on a good old fashioned bar grill. The crinkle cut fries were screaming hot right out of the fryer. The cocktails were served in styrofoam cups which is a bit cheap considering you are charged $4 for the liquor and charged separately for the mixer, but they don't skimp on the booze so you get a flavorful drink to wash down all that great food. A place like Schindler's is great for a Saturday afternoon get together when you want some good food. In addition to burgers, chicken, wraps and appetizers, they served fried bologna in several ways. Fried bologna is a country staple. Don't knock it until you have tried its salty, crispy edged goodness. This is a tavern, so smoking is permitted. There is no separate section for non-smokers, just an FYI.

Philly cheese steak wrap. Beef tasted bad, and cheese was queso out of a jar..Inedible !

I've eaten at Schindler's many years ago, well known back then for its famous fried bologna burger. It was decent bar food. So when visiting the area, I had this on my bucket list to try again. It was pretty bad and no where near what I remembered. The staff was nice, but service was slow..I mean VERY slow! Like well over an hour to get burger & fries and we were almost like the only ones there? The burgers were WAY overdone, like almost burnt to a crisp done. And the bologna? It used to be a 3/4" thick slice of Krey bologna they fried. Not anymore! Just a single thin slice of ordinary pre-packaged lunch meat bologna and it was way over fried. My brother's was as black as his burnt burger. To top things off, mine came lathered with a ton of mustard & ketchup on it which I did not ask for, dripping all over. No mayo which I did ask for, but they didn't have any. The wife got their 12" philly cheese steak wrap. It came out less than 9" and was absolutely awful. The cheese they used was merely cheap queso cheese out of a jar...not hardly even warm, though the tortilla was partly burnt. And the beef had a strong off taste, like maybe old? It was inedible. The fried pickles were wedges straight from a cheap refrigerated jar, dipped in batter and fried. The batter was done, but pickles inside were still cold. Later heard Schindler's Tavern had been sold and had new owners. Obviously they hadn't figured things out yet. I don't like giving negative reviews, but quite honestly this place can only get better bc they can hardly get worse. Sadly, I won't be back.

I give it four stars just for the experience. Double Divey deliciousness. Dark, quiet, homespun friendliness. Traditional American. Try the Bologna Burger if you try nothing else. I'm not sure you'd call it gourmet but it's Schindler's stock in trade. Heart healthy menu, yeah, go somewhere else. A true Yelper's delight. Fried fried is the order of the day (Year). Local watering hole that satisfies the rural American soul. Oh Yeah, Stag on tap unless you want to offend someone. Just kidding but it's the King of beers here. I've never felt more welcome anywhere else. Everyone speaks to you and a stranger has never walked through the door. Love it.

Lots of great favorites including meatloaf, hamburger steak, wings, fried chicken gizzards and livers, homemade desserts, including cobblers and banana pudding, etc, etc, with all the homemade sides and vegetables that you can imagine. And then there are the "throwed rolls." Hot with butter, honey, gravy, sorghum molasses, and more. Great service and down home country ambiance to spare. Don't go expecting fancy, but I guarantee you won't leave hungry.

The staff were friendly as usual and our server was really good and the place is clean as usual! The salmon patties were really good, I'd order them again. The food, overall, seems to be not well mixed with salt. My husband's chicken and dumplings had an inedible layer of just pure salt. He mixed everything up and it was better but the shock of a mouthful of salt lingered for the rest of the meal. The fried potatoes pass around had the same issue. This is still very much so a tourist destination and a once in a blue moon trip for us when we find ourselves in the area. The allure of the "throwed rolls" and pass arounds is enough to keep this place an option for us, especially since we're learning what not to order.
