I was very disappointed today when I went to Schaeffer's greenhouse 100 year anniversary. I've been going to Schaeffer for many years and well as to say it was definitely different when I walked in, but honest to goodness they got a bar there, and the bartender looked like she was an actual street walker totally totally inappropriate for the Schaefers greenhouse that I know I'm not sure where they're wanting to go with this new management stuff, but I guess it remains to be seen but right now I'm not holding out much hope read more

This business has been sold. The new owners don't have any idea what they're doing unfortunately. I went here 2 weeks before Christmas and the retail side was gutted for renovations. Went back in March before Easter and the entire store was closed for renovations. Now it's 2 weeks before Mother's Day and the retail side is open but the only thing they changed was the flooring. The flowers are not ready for spring shoppers. Minimal to choose from. The planters that would typically sell for $150 all planted and ready to go have just been planted and look pathetic. They've missed 3 major flower holidays to replace the floor on one side?? And it's still not complete. read more

The flowers ordered for Mother's Day for a dear and loving person were horrible, there are NO words to express how disappointed and disgusted I am with the arrangement that was delivered and on MOTHER'S Day. The arrangement did not come close to the one pictured and should never have been sent to any recipient by Schaefer Greenhouse employees. Amazing customer service! Due to the shelter in place order, Schaefer's retail s is temporarily closed. However, Schaefer's employee, Benjamin, went above and beyond today to provide outstanding customer service. He took our phone call, listened to what we were looking for (a ceramic birdbath) and then took the time to take several photos and send them to us so we could select the perfect gift for our friend. He even took our payment over the phone and had the beautiful birdbath ready for us to pick up within minutes. This is true A+ customer service and it is appreciated beyond words. This gift was for a dear family who tragically lost their 9 year old daughter two weeks ago. There is only one reason I drive 40 miles to Schaefer Greenhouses and that's for the selection of geraniums. They host colors, shades, and combinations not found anywhere else in Chicagoland. They do a LOT of other things here. I once got a floral arrangement for an ailing coworker that was beautiful and well priced. They also grow some other speciality flowers and tropicals and they offer full wedding services and landscaping contracting. Since I haven't used many of their other services I didn't include them in my review. The reason for just four stars is that prices are a bit higher. Especially on lawn ornaments and pest control products. It's worth it to me to make additional stops at big box home centers for those supplies including bags of dirt or manure. Back to geraniums. They start almost all of them from seed and hold exclusive distribution of some color patterns not found elsewhere in the area. You need to see them to appreciate the true unique qualities. They offer many of their annual plants in sizes ranging from an eight-pack all the way up to gallon size monsters. And their experts put together some beautiful show patio or hanging planters but I prefer to do all my own arranging. If you get basic herbs or veggies there is a good chance those were brought in from outside sources. Same as with Home Depot or Lowes. Schaefer does have a nice selection of hydrangeas and perennial grasses but those are brought in as well. I will continue to shop here every spring for the geraniums that set my house apart from the rest. No matter if you have a balcony with one patio bucket or a huge wrap around porch with hanging baskets, this is where to get the stuff to just wow your neighbors. read more

I was in need of some funeral plants for a friend in Aurora, I emaled my cousin in a nearby city and asked for a good florist. he said that I had to use Schaer's/ They are the best. I sent a basket garden. My friend just cried when she saw the arrangement, So full and beautiful! Now I am recommending Scheaders if you are in the Aurora area. read more

Oh Schaefers! I remember when I was little and I would run amok in the flowers as my mother shopped around, always looking for a fallen flower or two to take home. I loved it here! So why not come for my wedding flowers! I met with Kathy, along with my Ipad, dialed up to my Pinterest inspiration board. She provided me with the WiFi password and we were off! She listened to all of my desires, had me send her the Pinterest link to the board, and gave me a quote. I came back 2 months before the big day to finalize details and go over the plans again. She had my Pinterest board printed out! She even allowed me to bring my own ribbon that I found for the bouquets & boutineers. She stayed within my budget, and gave me everything I wanted. She suggested flowers that would look best and be in season. Check the pictures. She personally came out to Streator, IL and placed the flowers herself. Amazing. Best place around here for poinsettias, geraniums, and house plants. As far as I can see, the negative reviews are mostly for people claiming they didn't get the floral arrangements they wanted or other things, not for the selection and quality of their live plants. They have an unbelievable variety of poinsettias now (Nov 24, 2017): prices ranging from $15 to $60 depending on size and number of stems. They have classic red, white, lemon yellow, red splotched with yellow, orange, purple, pink, white with red/pink edges (that's what I purchased), curly rose shaped petals, probably others I'm forgetting. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. read more

So I used to love shaffer's but my opinion starting to change. I was there last week with my kids and I understand we're in a crisis with this virus but they were allowed in last week. Today since they are under 16 they were not allowed in. This is just craziness. The most vulnerable population is allowed in, but my kids can't come in? And furthermore they couldn't give me a reason why, nothing had changed since last week except for their own made-up rules. What makes it really frustrating is that I waited in line for 30 minutes before they told me this. Maybe if you would have told me right when I showed up and saw me waiting in line while you were just standing there the whole time I would have laughed and everything would have been okay. Needed top soil, it was delivered within an hour and 1/2! The young man who delivered it was VERY nice. Not only that ! but I got the mushroom compost as well, and either in the top soil or the compost, there was composted manure. AWESOME!! I was going to have to "outsource" for my manure and that was presenting a problem as transporting it would stink up my car. :D read more

I gave them one star because I couldn't give none. Their flower selection was laughable along with the prices of their prearranged flower arrangements. We went in to get cut flowers for a luau party we were hosting. When we told her we wanted to do the arrangements ourselves, she became disintegrated in helping us. Was a bit sarcastic at times. We ended up going to Phillips on Ogden Ave in Naperville, who had easily 4 times more selection of flowers at a lower price and had someone going over the top to help us. I had my wedding flower done here. The service was great and everything was delivered on time. Only problem was that my bouquet wasn't what I wanted. It was completely missing the roses and the fullness I wanted. I did call and wasn't offered any composition at all. Just an I'm sorry. We used Schaefer Greenhouses as the florist for our wedding, and I'm really glad we did. My bouquet was just perfect, the bridesmaids' simple baby's breath bouquets were just lovely, and they did a fantastic job of setting up boxwood greens on our reception centerpieces. Flowers can be one of the more expensive components of a wedding, but we found Schaefer's prices to be very reasonable. Service was great too. read more

A truly awful experience! I have gone to Schaefer's several times. I take very good care of all my house plants. I value them greatly. When it came time to switch one of my plants into a bigger pot, I carefully packed it up and drove the 30 minutes there so the "experts" could replant it. After getting shuffled around for 20 minutes, my plant came out with a broken stalk! No one said anything to me, I had to mention it. When I asked to speak with the manager, who ended up being the owner, I was brushed off and told to rig some kind of support for it. Unbelievable! She was rude and genuinely didn't even care. The level of professionalism and customer care was laughable. I will NEVER go back again! Nor will I EVER recommend this outrageously overpriced hack shop to ANYONE! read more

I called to talk to Beth, the wedding floral cooridinator, and it was possibly the worst experience I've had planning my wedding. I was looking for some pricing on flowers only because my sister is doing the arrangements. Beth told me the the flowers I want are pricey because they are not really in season and I should start from square one with a new plan. I asked her if we could make an appointment to come in and look at options and I was told " For customers that I am doing the work for, I make appointments for a consultation and to look at books. You can stop in the store and if I'm available I'll try to help you." Needless to say, we will not be ordering anything from her or this shop. I paid $53.95 to have a "premium" arrangement delivered. Because they couldn't get it there on time, they promised to upgrade the arrangement. I expected a large arrangement with at least 10-12 roses. The flowers weren't delivered until late the next day, and what they delivered was a small, insipid product with only 3 small roses. This was not an upgrade; in fact, it wasn't even a premium arrangement. I asked for a partial refund, and they never even responded. read more

I am a garden club sponsor for a high school. I put together an order with Schaefer for mushroom compost. I initiated contact via email in order to share order information with the other club sponsors. While communication was very good initially, when it came time to place our order, communication was slow at best. When I presented requested information in hopes of finalizing the order, I received no response at all. After calling Schaefer, and explaining the lack of communication, not only was the woman not apologetic, but became short with me as if pointing out their lack of communication was somehow my fault. I would have taken my business elsewhere if not for the fact that the club needs this compost yesterday. read more

Last fall I bought 2 David Austin rosebushes from Schaefer Greenhouse. The cashier said not to worry even though it was late in the season - if they didn't take, save the receipt, and they would replace them. They didn't make it. If zero stars was possible I would have gone with that. Since moving to the area 3 years ago we try to spend our money at the local businesses, especially family owned and operated. I have an adult son with special needs. When I saw a help wanted sign out front of Schaefer I told my son about it. He has greenhouse experience and it would have been close to home as he relies on public transportation and family members. He was called in for an interview with Brett Schaefer. He dressed appropriately and has his resume in hand. He was asked no questions and "interview" lasted all of 5 or 10 minutes with Brett Schaefer handing back his resume and telling him he'd let him know by Monday. No phone call. No returned phone calls after we tried to contact them. I understand that he may have thought that the job wasn't a good fit, even though my son had experience and is physically capable, but at least be courteous enough to conduct the interview. Bad manners. Unprofessional. What message does this send? I will never spend another cent at this business. read more

The bulk topsoil is horrible. It is nothing you'd expect from a bag of dirt from a store. They delivered 3 yards of unhealthy, dirt that looked like it came from a field. Price was good, but quality terrible. Better to have a store deliver the same amount in bags. At least you're guaranteed clean, fine, top soil. read more

Very disappointed with the customer service. I placed an order on line to be delivered the next day. I received a call the next afternoon (late) that they could not deliver the arrangement I had ordered. They told me they could still deliver something however would not be what I had originally wanted. I told them that would be okay. The flowers did not get delivered til late that evening. The next morning I find out my account has been charged THREE times for arrangements I did not approve. When I called Schaefer's I left a message for the manager and did not receive a call back. I called Schaefer's back and spoke with the manager she said she did not get my message. I explained everything and she transfered me to a billing person who was rude and said it was not Schaefers problem it was the other floral company who was out of state who could not complete the order. I tried to explain to her if she was having problems with the order I would have had appreciated a call and I would have cancelled the order and gone with someone else. Never did I get an apology from this women. Now I am stuck doing all the work trying to get the charges removed off my account. read more

No stars would be more appropriate. Unless you want to be treated poorly, talked to even worse, aggravated, and completely inconvenienced I suggest you go with another company. I was returning home from vacation when I received a call from their delivery man saying he was at my house. I told him I probably wouldn't be home for another two hours. The response was, "Look lady, I don't have time to make multiple stops to your home. I can leave a delivery notice and when you get home you can call to arrange a delivery time that's convenient for you. If I can fit it in great otherwise you are going to just have to wait until tomorrow." I explained that I would have to leave for work an hour after returning home and would need to sleep the next day. I asked if he could just leave the flowers with my neighbor. Again, I heard, "Look lady, I still have to go back to the shop, out to Naperville, and have a delivery to Rush Copley. I can try again later, but if you aren't home you will have to wait until I can drop them off." I explained that I didn't appreciate his tone and if he called me lady one more time we were going to have a problem. He interjected with, "What am I supposed to call a person that is a female?" I went on to say you addressed me by my name when you called try using that. I also stated that the flowers he was delivering are my birthday gift from my father and I look forward to them every year. I don't appreciate his making this so difficult to receive flowers and to please just leave them with a neighbor. I came home to find a delivery notice requesting I call the store to schedule the delivery. I called the store and voiced my displeasure in the delivery man and my experience this far. 40 minutes later and five minutes before I had to leave for work there was another delivery notice on my door. The same delivery man was getting in his van and driving away after not ringing the door bell. I called the shop and asked to speak with the manager. No apology was given. Instead I received, "I don't know what to tell you." After explaining that this is a birthday tradition and I look forward to my birthday sunflowers each year and that my Dad scheduled the delivery today so I would have them as a welcome home and happy birthday, I was told, "You should've had someone home to receive the flowers then." I pointed out that they should be ashamed of their deplorable customer service. She responded if I didn't want the flowers that's fine, they are beautiful. I received my flowers the next day after working a 12 hour shift and having to stay awake for 2 hours after arriving home waiting for the same rude delivery man. Thank you for ruining a yearly tradition that normally brings me so much joy. Shame on this business! read more
