Avoid this business at all costs. They canvassed our neighborhood with flyers advertising…read morebasketball tryouts. We gave them a try and regret it. Such a waste of money. It is ran by a husband and wife team (Tim & Crystal Huang). They charged a non-refundable $25 fee for basketball tryouts & we gave it a shot. Hundreds showed up. Seems all kids made a team level. They promise you an elite program but fall short. Business acumen is just not there. In just a couple short months we shelled out over $500 with little to no return; playing time or constructive learning. Monthly dues are $135/mo; not including uniform, tournament, league fees. Our child made the highest level team, but it was a mess. We lost half our team in 2 mos. as parents left. They have you sign a year long contract and are unafraid to threaten parents with attorneys & fees. It's just not worth it. Skills trainings are one size fits all approach & crammed with over 30 to 40 kids. We also got an unpaid coach who was tasked with coaching more than one team in exchange for freebies for him and his child (who also played on our team). We found a better team to play on w/o paying $135+ monthly fees.

Dear Volleyball Parent,…read more As a past volleyball parent and mental health professional, I wanted to strongly advise against allowing your son or daughter to be trained at Club V. While you might be attracted to the banners with kids receiving scholarships, please understand that the mental toll associated with this club is atrocious. Only now that my daughter has given up volleyball do I feel comfortable leaving feedback due to the culture and influence of Club V. Firstly, Club V strings players along with tryouts done initially where you put down a deposit and then you are placed on a team after your high school season. During this time, you might be promised one team but then recruiting from other clubs occurs and your daughter might be bumped in order to weaken other clubs in the valley. We were bumped after my daughter didn't receive a commitment to a college and were told that she would be able to play with her friends after she played with the senior 18s club only to be lied too and she was demoted to the lower team. Second, Club V monopolizes and only sees girls as volleyball players solely. Club V actively recruits players to go to certain schools where other Club V coaches are coaching high school volleyball with other Club V players as they assume that only volleyball matters and nevermind academics, social, and emotional support from other institutions where your girl may play. For instance, my daughter was recruited to Skyline by the Skyline coach and Reed Carlson only because it had a volleyball program that was coached by a Club V coach. In addition, Club V coaches then go on to prioritize Club V players on high school teams. If you have a question, please note the starters for the 2025 5A Utah Women's championship teams where I believe almost all were Club V players. While you might think this is because of the Club's skill, I would more likely purport that it is due to their branding recruiting, and willingness to throw players under the bus to get the best girls in the state. Third, Club V is about winning and that's it. There is absolutely no loyalty or investment into keeping the players. Multiple times, coaches would leave tournaments to coach other teams if their team didn't do well. Our coach at Nationals left before we even played our last game because he wanted to attend another tournament in another state where he was a secondary coach because they were winning. Please tell me the message that gives the girls that worked so hard to go to Nationals? Finally, Club V head coach Reed Carlson can be disturbingly aggressive with his players. While on a college visit, a college coach described how Reed had traumatized one of his players and he had to work on building her confidence back up. After watching game and practices, I concur that Reed breaks his players down and is extremely emotionally taxing and does not foster resilience but rather extreme dependence on his style of play and emotional need to please only their coach rather than enjoying the game and playing for their team. Overall, the experience at Club V has been miserable and I would actively dissuade anyone from playing at the Club. Only the other players and their parents make the experience bearable.

So, on a recent trip to the Salt Lake City area, I had some downtime and thought it would be a great time to do a few laps. I was amazed at the abundance of aquatic centers available to the public in the SLC area . . . WOW! I found Marv Jenson on Yelp and since it was relatively close to where I was staying, I gave it a shot. Prior to this, I was only aware of one other aquatic center in the area (Dimple Dell) and although I wasn't as impressed with Marv Jenson, I can't complain either. It's an indoor facility with 3 lap lanes open most all day. I found it to be much less crowded than my hometown YMCA, which was nice. They had pull buoys and float bars to borrow and the water was heated (a little warm for lap swimming, but comfortable). To my surprise, they also had a sauna and steam room available for their patrons. A one day pass was only $6 which, in my opinion, is a relative bargain. It's worth a visit to get your swim on or to visit the gym.

It has separate rooms for weights, weight machines, and aerobic machines. Some other rec centers lack the space and they throw all three together. For example, Gene Fullmer does not have a weight room, they have a weight corner. There is a steam room, a sauna, and a hot tub. You can't beat that. The staff is almost always friendly. The place is always clean. They take good care of the equipment. Did I mention that I love this place? I live about three minutes from Gene Fullmer, a great facility as well, but I will travel the extra distance (about six miles round trip) for the larger, well-equipped weight room and for the sauna and steam room.
