having eaten at both inn on the green and the black horse with my family recently if were talking…read moreabout comparisions there isnt one lets start with the service the inn on the green provides professional service and standards that we have not experienced in a long time at a village pub very impressed. as for the black horse half the staff were outside smoking when we arrived and the language was disgusting even if we didint have our children with us and thats why we was probably waiting ages for any service, we could have come between there smoke breaks if was told when that was. lets talk about food the inns web site is totally correct fresh food and some grown on the premises as i saw for myself it was very well cooked and just as well presented again down to the service again very impressed. the black horse how ever not alot fresh im afraid and would of been nice for all our family to eat together instead of in stages and it was not busy at all so no excuse there. down sides for both places.....The inn on the green, cud nt find one on our visit great value for money and all the awards they have won totally earned including a great review in the journal for february recently. the black horse, bad news quite alot overpriced including drinks, service very poor, language outside and inside very offensive and no need at all and obviously allowed by the management, very dissapointed. Not a problem, except that area doesn't get table service. Having to join a queue (which started outside the building) to order when you've booked ahead is very poor. Ordered roast dinners two weeks in a row, and both weeks ended up with no stuffing. We raised it the second time and ended up being brought out two cocktail sausages (?) because they ran out. So, they just thought they'd skip sending out what we paid for and see if we noticed? Although there was no table service in our section, someone was available very quickly to tell us to get our puppy down when he dared to sit up on the bench with me. In a dog friendly pub... in the dog friendly section!? The food honestly wasn't bad, but the rest of the experience was poor. Majority of staff seemed very junior, and there weren't enough of them on shift. The car park is also a mess, with cars regularly parking in the middle, blocking you in - even in spite of the subtle threats of a fine if you don't book your plate at the bar. You'd be better off at a 'non dog friendly' pub and make do with sitting outside, honestly.

Best find on holiday ever!!…read more Set in a beautiful little village with a huge village green with loads of parking round and about (although im sure that on a mid summer sunny day parking may be somewhat difficult!). The pub has a bar area and a restaurant area - we only ever went into the bar as you could eat int here and it was really cosy (dogs are also allowed!). The staff were incredibly friendly and chatty (lets face it, Yorkshire, particularly North Yorkshire folk are possibly the most friendly on the planet - i challenge you to disprove this!). The food was INCREDIBLE. Nothing fancy pants, just really good food, VERY big portions (trust me on this, you dont need three courses - choose your weapon of starter or dessert to go alongside your main - we made the mistake one night and 1) couldnt eat it all and 2)pretty much rolled home). We spent an evening in the pub, had a meal and then sat playing card games - we felt incredibly welcome. So welcome that we ended up visiting three times in a week long holiday. You cant really get a better recommendation than that can you??

Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.
