A couple of years ago I bought 1/4 beef from a rancher in Filer. Scarrow Meats did the processing. They were not very friendly when I went to pick up the meat but I was just glad to get some beef in my freezer. It was exceptional beef. So the next year I ordered another quarter from the same guy. I ordered it in spite of the fact that he raised my price by .50 per pound because I was only getting a quarter. This time the meat was different. The first thing we did was thaw a package of ribeyes. One was beautiful, well marbled and nice color. The second one in the same package didn't even look like it came from the same animal. It smelled and looked different. I took them to a retired meat cutter friend of mine and he believed that they didn't come from the same animal. I would guess about 50% of the meat was substandard and the rest was ok. I've attached a photo of one of the packages of cube steaks that we opened. Terrible meat. I contacted the rancher and he agreed that it didn't look like it came from the same animal and advised that Don would make it right. I never heard from either of them again. I do believe that we received someone else's 2nd rate animal. I would love to give the rancher another chance to sell me some beef but he won't process anywhere else but scarrows unless I buy a whole animal. Oh well! read more

Worse company I have ever done business with. Took advantage of my family for their own personal financial gain. Back in October my family order a beef from Scarrow Meats in Jerome Idaho. When we received the beef it was bad and could not be consumed. When I called Scarrow Meats they were very helpful and apologetic and the owner Don stated "I will do whatever I can to make it right". We decided to wait until he could butcher another beef . We were told it would be a 6 weeks. After constantly calling an asking when we would receive our beef and asking for a refund of $2300.00 we paid we finally picked up our beef today 3 months later. While unpacking the boxes we saw we received two boxes of "dog bones" this we suspect was to make up weight because they otherwise did not want to give to us human consumable beef. When I called to ask about the dog bones the secretary stated it was on our invoice for dog bones. Sure is a funny thing we received not 1 (one) dog bone when we received the bad meat the first time. This is not a honest company that can be trusted on the owners words alone. If you do business with this company I would suggest you ask for any promises in writing and make sure you get what you ordered. If I could give them a worse rating I would. read more

Worst business ever. Been a rancher all my life. Was visiting my sister in law in Buhl and she related the fiasco her and her daughter was having with this company. The first bunch of meat, which cost them $2300.00, they received in Sept was spoiled, leaving me to believe the meat cutter and wrapper knew that and wrapped any way. Secondly, there was not one dog bone included in this batch of meat. Promise to make it right was a 3 month wait only to receive 4 boxes of dog bones weighing 100# and short meat order. There was no mention of refund at the time if pick up. Scarrows was contacted and she was told he bought a lesser weighing cow and oh I do owe you a partial refund. Here's where I come in, never in all the butchering I have had done while on the ranch did bones come with the order. They had to be requested, I took my sis's 2 boxes back along with photos of first and last batches highlighting the freezer space, and tried to talk to this Don character. He said they ordered the bones; he could show me the invoice, which by the way no invoice was given to my sister nor her daughter for either batch of meat. (They have small dogs poodle cross so why would they want bones bigger than their dogs) Long saga, but I would never ever recommend this company to do road kill let alone butcher something for my family. Very dishonest and unethical business, there are other reputable companies in the Buhl area I would strongly encourage using one of them. read more

I have worked in the meat industry for over 30 years and know almost every processor within 500 miles. As a food safety consultant I can assure you your meat is processed professionally here. I take my elk here because they are safe and efficient. Their jerky, sausage , and salami are off the charts in great flavor. As for meat taste, all beef taste varies. Range fed or grass fed means that sagebrush they gnawed on imparts a similar taste to game that have fed on the same. Give me cattle that have been "finished" with gain for 3-4 weeks. I bought a steer from a rancher for $1,000 and took it to Scarrows to be cut and wrapped. The people doing the actual cutting are idiots, they couldn't cut their way out of a paper bag. I wanted to keep the tongue, a cut that costs $6.95/lb in the store. The moron doing the cutting pulled on the skinny part of the tongue and sliced it off, leaving the thickest and best part (over 50%) to be thrown away within the head. I asked the heart to be cut in half. The idiot cut it crosswise, not lengthwise. I asked for short rib plates. These are supposed to have 1 to 2 inches of chuck meat on the bones, so each rib when separated, weighs 1 to 1.5 pounds. When BBQ'd low and slow, these are awesome, Texas style beef ribs, sometimes known as Dino Ribs. The moron at Scarrows cut all the meat off, except a thin 1/4 inch of meat layer, left the rib bones, leaving pretty much nothing but bones that can't be BBQ'd and be able to eat. Those are just some of the cuts of beef that were screwed up badly. I could continue to add to the list. I took a thousand dollars of high quality beef to Scarrows and the morons there cut it so poorly, I'd just as soon feed it to the dogs than try to cook it so its presentable. Stay away from Scarrows, they haven't got a clue and will destroy your meat. read more

Scarrow's is top rate. I've had my Elk processed there for many years. Don and his wife are first rate(his crew is amazing too). They will get your Elk hung regardless of the time of day. I've brought meat in the middle of the night and what a great feeling to know that Don will answer the phone at midnight and get your Elk in the cooler when you know it's going to be 90 degrees the next day. Peace of mind, quality wrapping and cutting and first rate service are what I think of when I think of Scarrow's. I come out from Vermont every year and I use Scarrow's every year and will continue too. They always get me home for my wedding anniversary. read more

Um, is that "grass fed" cattle that I am tasting? I've never experienced a flavor of meat like the meat Scarrow's offers. Can't describe it other than "different." I will not make purchase again from Scarrow's. I know they are popular and people love them, it's just not for me. I cannot put enough taco seasoning on my ground beef to get it to mask that "grass-fed" flavor. I spent $250.00 on a quarter cow to learn that I do not like "grass-fed" cow. UPDATE (06/29/2015): I was told that it's possible I didn't receive a cow at all. It could have been elk. Another theory is that I could have received a DAIRY cow, which are not meant for slaughter. To be fair, I was at a BBQ at a buddy's house and he had Scarrow Meat steaks on the BBQ and WOW! what a difference. The steak that came off the grill is what I expected MY steak to taste like. I am starting to think that I was given the wrong order. I should have called them up upon first taste, but was originally told that we were tasting "grass-fed" cow and that the taste was "normal." Yeah, won't use THAT friend anymore as a taste tester. I added one star to their rating based on my most recent experience with their product. read more
