Unfortunately, Leuven is not blessed with an array of food, as its more general attention is drawn to the beer scene. So, let me say that I've been to this place at least 30x and I've probably eaten every item of sashimi, nigiri, and half of the rolls. I still go back. It's cheap. And you can drink Stella for 2 euros while you fill your gullet with fresh fish for 5. No kidding. The à la carte is cheap. They can be really busy some weekends, so reserve a place, or prepare to wait. Oh and the people are super nice, despite the busy scene.

The first time they completely messed up our order and instead of getting the sushi boat we ordered we got a 13 piece menu with the waitress saying "The rest will come in a bit". Our rest went to another table and while we got nothing, the table next to us got double their order and paid for only one. Of course, after calling the manager and telling her the service at her restaurant was terrible we didn't pay for anything seeing as our evening was ruined. The second time, the same waitress that messed up our order the week before was almost on the verge of doing the same this time again. Though, this time our order was going to go to the table next to us that had been waiting for their boat for only 10 minutes in comparison to our hour worth of waiting. After being confronted, her response was "The system doesn't say anything." Again, called the manager. Honestly, if i wanted to fight for my food I'd take up hunting instead of going to a restaurant. The sushi was great as always at this place, but really, fix your service. Train your waitresses or get new ones. Never going to sit down there for dinner again.

My friend got the fried rice which was simple put quite good. For the soup we had the choice between chicken and miso, and they give you a big bowl. So the food was good but very light, so prepare for that or maybe come on a day when your not that hungry. I have heard great things about their unlimited sushi though, so I'll probably come back and try that on a day when I feel like having 5 rounds of sushi :)

We tried calling several times to make a reservation, but no one answered, and we couldn't find any online booking system. It left us wondering--how do people even manage to get a table here? When we arrived, we saw an empty table with no reservation sign on it. However, the chef saw us, came over, and abruptly said, "We're full!" before we could even ask a question, then walked away. One of the staff members also completely ignored us, which felt quite rude and unwelcoming. No matter how good the food might be, this kind of attitude makes us not want to return. They seriously need to improve their reservation system and reconsider how they treat potential customers.

Well, let's say it makes you feel in a small sushi joint in Japan. The place is small - but cozy -, so reservation is recommended. There is no AC, but only a couple of fans working in times of warm weather, definitely gives it a local feeling. On some days, it can be filled with Japanese people who really know how to enjoy their food, which makes you really feel as if you were in Japan for a little bit. Another nice factor is that you can order a bottle of shoju and leave it there with your name if you weren't able to finish it, so you can continue the next time you come again. Neat, isn't it? So, to conclude, there is definitely nothing that would stop me from going there again. Ok, I forgot to mention that the waiter can come off as a little bit arrogant. However, once you start chatting with him, he is unstoppable. :). When in 2009, Nanaban opened I was jumping up and down with joy: a place which served ramen of the same quality of those in Japan, and only a short drive from my house! Fast forward to 2019, I no longer live in Belgium but in the meantime I've lived a few years in Asia, traveled to Japan several times and gourmet ramen are much more common. However, returning to Nanaban still makes my heart sing. Over the years the quality hasn't changed, they still serve perfectly cooked ramen with a great broth. Their tonkotsu ramen are one of the dishes which always manage make me happy, regardless of what happens. Seriously, their ramen are much better than many places which come highly recommended.
