I fell in love with a cute little dog that I saw on Adopt a Pet. The website listed Carolina Canine Rescue in Mount Airy NC as the dog's residence. After many attempts to reach someone at the Rescue, I called the Surry County Animal Shelter. The extremely helpful young lady who answered explained that the Carolina Canine Rescue was CLOSED. She said the dog's were taken to the Save a Mutt Kennel, & then provided their phone number. I then phoned the Kennel, & left a message. That afternoon a text message from that Kennel's number came in. The message said, "please text me." So I did, & with that text, began the MOST WONDERFUL THING that has happened to me in a long time. The super kind lady who overseas the Save a Mutt Kennel, I believe her name is Betty Haynes, explained that the owner of the Carolina Canine Rescue, Melanie Morrison, who was her VERY close friend, had unexpectedly passed away. So she felt the need to take in all of the dog's from Melanie's Rescue. I asked her if she could find the little dog (I described him), that I had seen on Adopt a Pet, that was listed as being in Melanie's Rescue. She said that most of the dogs were in foster homes in the local area, but she would see if she could find out anything. She texted back, and explained that the dog that I had seen, was not among the dogs from Carolina Canine Rescue. She said the dog's bio on Adopt a Pet was old, & she had asked Melanie's children to remove the outdated ones. I was disappointed, but I was so blessed by Betty going to the trouble of trying to FIND the little dog I wanted. She also explained how much the extra cost of the vet care was for all the dogs that she had taken in. Plus how desperately she needs parents to adopt some of these precious dogs. We adopted Phoebe (formerly Karen) last month (January). She is around 13 weeks and a HEALTHY shepherd mix puppy. We've only had her a little over a week, but we are already in love! I adopted a puppy from this organization in january of 2023. He was transported to NY and four days after welcoming this adorable pup ..he died. My vet said he contracted a virus before transport because he was sickly when I picked him up. i contacted the organization immediately and was told according to the contract that I would get the adoption fees reimbursement . Sadly this did not happen...after writing numerous times , I received less than half of what I gave them. Not only did they not abide by their written contract but my i was devastated going through the process of losing that precious puppy. i hope no one has to go through this. The only reason I am giving two stars for this rescue is because they at least responded to me via email (a lot of other people reviewing didn't even receive that curtsey from them). Be prepared to give all background information to this rescue. Do not leave anything out and make sure you are able and comfortable to provide any facts about the information you provide. During the process, you will feel you are adopting a child as opposed to an animal. The site lists how they are so overpopulated with animals and need to get them adopted to good homes but they will make the potential adopter go through every loop hole to even be CONSIDERED. In a way, I respect and understand it. They don't want to hand the animals over to just anyone because the animal might end up back in their care down the road if the applicants are completely overlooked. But, I think the whole application process is tedious and a bit over exaggerated. My husband and I applied for a dog. I was shocked I even got a response via email (after reading other reviews). They wanted to know more about our cat which I was happy to provide. Our cat is the only animal my husband and I adopted together/care for as a married couple. They wanted the name of the vet which I was also happy to provide. In the application, they want to know ALL animals you have had and if you have experience with dogs. My husband and I both have experience with dogs as we grew up with them our whole lives. I was also happy to provide that information in the application. So, once the rescues 'processing department' spoke with our current vet about our ONLY cat, they wanted to call the previous vets of our previous family dogs (that are no longer with us). Mind you, our dogs have passed years ago. Really? As I explained via email back to them, the dogs were family dogs (technically given to my husband and me when we were much younger from our parents). The dogs would be under two completely different vets and both my husband's parents and mine would have to call and allow this kennel to speak with them about it. My husband and I are applying for this dog together as a married couple. The only pet we have and adopted together was our cat. They talked to the vet which gave them all the information they wanted. Why is this even necessary? In response to my email, I received another email later that night stating the dog was adopted. That's nice. In my opinion, a normal person would understand the circumstances and think; well I did speak with their current vet. Clearly, that is not enough for this rescue. At that point, they might as well take your fingerprints and run a background check too. You may think because they are emailing or calling you about your application you are in the clear- but they are speaking to who knows how many other people about the same dog. After the fact, I read up on their FAQS page (linked to their email) and they state they approve more than one person for the same dog. 'Whoever gets the deposit paid first gets the dog.' So really, what are they more concerned about? Truly finding a good person/family or getting the money for it? Please, do yourself and family a favor. There are a TON of rescues, shelters, etc. that will make the process of adopting a smooth transition for you and the animal. Save yourself the disappointment. read more

I wish you could give less than a one. Have had labs our entire life, looked to rescue a lab mix from this group. Received a follow up of our application requesting personal pictures of our dog who passed earlier in the year. Didnt hear anything after that. Reached back out to them after 8 business days just to hear, sorry you could not be approved at this time. Why ask for my private pictures of my previous pet if you are going to deny me? Every picture of my dog was happy and playing. When I called and emailed to find out if you were just denied for that dog or for any pet from them, no response. They refuse to have any live dialogue and are inconsiderate of people. They dont follow the process as they lay out online. Saw a puppy I was interested in, and applied for it. After waiting the 8 days I sent a friendly reminder email asking about the status of the lil guy. After my email I received a response "sorry but your application was not approved". Called my reference and my vet to ask what the issue may have been, and surprise...they contacted neither. So..they legit followed zero of their own rules in the adoption process. Just for the record, I have lived on a multiple acre farm and have owned horses, goats, dogs, and many other pets for the entirety of my life. Seems counterintuitive to the adoption process to have such terrible follow through on one puppy. A cookie cutter "sorry he's been adopted", even if untrue..would've saved this complaint. I for one wouldn't trust a kennel, regardless of workload, that couldn't follow their own rules when it was convenient for them. read more

Contacted the agency right away, filled out an application, and got a reply later that day about the 8-day waiting period for approval. Had a very similar experience to Shane J. Can think of no explicable reason for rejection and have not yet received any reply. They have the right to reject anyone, obviously, but I think at very least you have the right to know their reasons for rejecting you. They also didn't check our references. With so many dogs needing homes, this just doesn't make any sense. Perplexed and disappointed! read more

Better places out there to save or rescue a animal from. Worked with another group Friends of Gibson County Animals and had a great experience less then 24 hours had a response on my application and picked up a beautiful little puppy from their rescue organization a few days ago. Thankfully this page has been set up because I too had difficulty finding any online reviews of Save A Mutt Kennel. We are Canadians who were looking for a rescue puppy and were having trouble finding one in Canada. We adopted our little pup through Save A Mutt (though I think she actually came from Carolina Canine Rescue in North Carolina and the two organizations are affiliated) and the whole process was quite smooth. The team at Save A Mutt responded to us promptly and answered all our questions. Our application was approved quickly and the instructions were clear about how to arrange for transportation to Henrietta, NY (about an hour from the Niagara/Buffalo border crossing in Ontario). We picked her up at about 1am at the meeting spot in a motel parking lot just off the highway. There were many other cars waiting at the same location. There were no problems crossing the border because they provide you with the vaccination history. She was too young to have received her rabies vaccine and our one customs official didn't know that but they were able to check and confirm she was okay to cross without it. The only thing I would recommend is printing off emails of correspondence with the shelter, your signed contract, and the paypal transaction records. I didn't have any of this with me and they don't give it to you when you pick up the animal so the border officials just wanted to see proof that we had adopted and paid for her. I was able to show them through emails on my cell phone. She came with her vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped. She had her vet appointment with us yesterday and was deemed very healthy. I think Save A Mutt is a terrific organization dedicated to finding homes for rescue animals and they obviously have had a lot of success adopting into Canada. I am glad they have the process available for Canadians. read more

I really hate to post this because we thought that these people were really doing a wonderful job of saving dogs from, simply put, death. However, I really think that it has to be said, in a pubic forum, that all is not what it appears to be with dog adoptions from Save a Mutt and possibly others. We decided to adopt two boy littermates and were highly encouraged to do so by them. They even gave us a discount to take two. Now, after two weeks of tying our best to get these pups trained we have consulted a dog trainer, with 40 years of experience. She suggested I look on line to find information about training littermates, which I did. The articles strongly discouraged taking littermates because it is extremely difficult,t if not impossible, to get them to achieve happy well adjusted lives and very likely to create severe behavioral problems. You may read up on this issue for yourself. God knows I wish I had this info ahead of time. We are going to keep these two little guys but we are looking at a very long haul to accomplish this very difficult task. Unfortunately, not everyone will have the time or the patience to get through this ordeal. I know these people are spending their own resources and time to save dogs but I fear they are actually setting them up to fail and end up with sad endings. I emailed them and got a prompt reprimand for expecting babies to not make mistakes. These pups are 15 old, small, but not exactly babies and we fully realize they are going to take a lot of attention, getting them out for middle of the night pee-pees and lots of attention but I feel that if we had been forewarned we would have been able to avoid this difficult situation for us and MOST IMPORTANTLY these poor little puppies. read more

My daughter and son-in-law applied for the puppy they wanted. The rescue had the couple place the payment through PayPal. The pup was sick and the vet would not release him. They were told the next week was another appointment on Thursday. The rescue would email them and give them more information. The pup received a bad report from the vet that Thursday. Late in the evening, the email came. On Friday, my daughter and the rescue decides that something was wrong with the pup and he shouldn't be adopted at this time. The payment would be returned by end of next week. Well, the rescue is now saying the money has been spent and file a complaint with PayPal. Ridiculous! I would not recommend this rescue. They do not have good communication. They fail to return money when the adoptions are not followed through with. read more

Communication from this rescue is zero. I know they received my app since they emailed me and said they would respond in 8 business days. Both my references said they were not contacted by said rescue. I can only surmise they did not like something on my app that caused them to reject it, so instead of questioning me further they just chose a non-response to communicate that my app was rejected. Was it my age? At 60 I could most likely run rings around them. Or was it that I take my dogs to a RESCUE VET for their basic medical needs. I guess spending $6k on back surgery for one of my dogs is not enough indication that I would do what ever necessary to provide for the health and well being of my dogs. No worries. I took my dogs to the RESCUE VET for vaccs and came home with my new addition. Plus is that I did not have to pay extra (which I would have gladly done) in transport fees and then travel to where transport delivers and he was neutered. Another expense I would have incurred on a young puppy from Save a Mutt. There are many rescues to choose from, so just a word of warning, this one is lacking in many ways. read more

Horrible experience. Adopted an adorable puppy who was clearly not well-taken care of by foster home. The puppy was absolutely unsocialized and took months to become slightly comfortable with people or other dogs. The puppy was supposedly vet checked two days before being transported up North, but still arrived with massive bald spots from ringworm, not to mention several different stomach parasites and skin mites. Seven months have passed and she has continued to have nothing but health problems. The company refuses to pay for vet bills after their dogs are transported, although they did waive our $70 application fee, this is nothing compared to all that has been spent on vet care since. All of these health problems could have been avoided if the puppy had been taken care of from birth. Despite this, the company continues to use this foster family after hearing about these problems. read more

As experienced by Allison and Shane, we had the same thing happen with us. After having had purebred Siberian Huskies for over 35 years, we decided to adopt a rescue pup, since it seemed so many were needing homes. Through Save a Mutt Kennel, we found an adorable puppy we wanted to adopt. We went through the painstaking process of filling out the comprehensive application form and submitted. We received what appeared to be an automated reply acknowledging our application and to wait 8 days. After a few days, and thinking of the # of pups needing rescuing, we contacted the agency again saying we would actually like to take the original pup as well as its brother. We did receive another response acknowledging response. On the 7th of 8 days we sent an email letting the organization know we would be out of touch for 1 day just to make sure, if contacted, we would not jeopardize our adoption. A day later we received the "Sorry but your application was not approved". We were totally shocked in that we are an ideal home. We have 3 acres of land, 45 years of experience with raising and loving dogs. We have a perfect set-up in and outside of the house and we communicated all of this on the application. We also checked our references and were told they had not been contacted. On their website they say not to pressure them if applications are rejected, that it is a "turn-off". Well, believe me, considering there was NO reason to reject us, and considering the need to save rescued dogs, this organization is a total "turn-off". And why would they not give feedback on why one is rejected? Clearly, in this situation, at best something on the application was misunderstood; at worst incompetence. What a shame in either case since rescuing dogs that otherwise may well be put down will not have the opportunity to live well-loved lives. read more

I already had a dog and wanted to rescue a companion for her, so I focused my search on local rescues that way everyone could meet each other before the decision was made. Unfortunately, it just wasn't working out locally so I took a chance with Save a Mutt Kennel and rescued a dog I never met before. I was nervous about this, especially since I already had a dog at home and didn't know how the two would mix. Save a Mutt Kennel was great to work with, though! There was a hiccup in the adoption process where the foster parent didn't bring the new puppy to the vet the night before transport, but Save a Mutt Kennel kept in touch with me, let me know of the problem, and worked things out so that the dog was able to be seen the next day and transported to me as scheduled. I really appreciated their communication with me about this, and their effort in doing what they needed to do to make the adoption happen without delay. Jimmy (formerly Viper) has been with us for 4 months now, and he is the sweetest dog I have ever met. He and my other dog are best friends and have been inseparable since the day they met. It's been such a joy having him. Rescuing him is one of the best decisions I have ever made- even though I couldn't meet him ahead of time. Thanks to everyone at Save A Mutt Kennel for all of your hard work in rescuing dogs and finding homes for them! poor very poor communication, I waited for several days, kept adopting the same dog as she went from West Sand Lake to Vt, to Maryland, to Niagara Falls, to North Carolina. your outfit refused me as an adoptee... then continued to send me input on the same dogs/puppies....even refused me thru a SISTERHOOD adoptee called "ALL PAWS". I have owned dogs since 1984 and have always taken good care of them-- I just want to share this input with your organization. My last dog went with me everywhere in the car, I kept the air conditioner on/ heat on when she was hot /or cold. She was a great dog, we went to see my father every Sat. for the 9 1/2 years I had her (succumbed to kidney disease). we went to the Adirondacks every week end camping from May thru mid-October, she loved it, loved the outside, the quiet, the stars, nature....She was well known, I took her into work with me from time to time and when I was working I had someone take her out everyday to walk which I paid for. This dog and I shared a bond and she knew what the cows were, we used to stop and watch them in the country and she knew what trains were, she was very smart and enjoyed her life with me and I enjoyed her companionship, her paw reaching for me when I was going thru Pattersonville to pet her and she never missed a trick. Since my father is in his 90's and still actively driving I don't feel my age had anything to do with your decision, as I still am very active In life. I feel you need better communication with your employees and maybe should change your questionnaire for a better outlook on people applying for adoption.
