Master planners Robert A.M. Stern and Jaquelin T. Robertson organized the town into distinct neighborhoods centered around parks and communal squares, with the goal of recreating the charm and sense of community associated with classic American small towns. One of the community's most popular green spaces is Founders Park, a hub for recreation and local activities. The park features a large athletic field used for soccer, football, and other sports, as well as tennis courts and a playground. Unfortunately, during my visit, the fields had recently been fertilized, and the overwhelming smell of horse manure quickly drove me out of the park. Before leaving, I stopped by my favorite part of Founders Park: the Veterans Memorial. The memorial was initiated by Eagle Scout Simon Sharp, who raised $15,000 for the project and created its original design. Tragically, Simon was diagnosed with leukemia during the effort. He received his Eagle Scout award for the project the day before he passed away from the disease. Volunteers completed the memorial in his honor. Today, the memorial stands as both a tribute to America's veterans and to Simon's service to the community. The park also contains a plaque honoring Simon's contributions, along with another commemorating Revolutionary War patriots. A popular spot for pictures is the large circle on the ground that says Celebration Florida with its founding date, 1994.

The name Orlo Vista is a blending of the city name Orlando and the word vista meaning a view. It was coined during Florida's land boom years when developers laid out the community just west of Orlando in the 1920s in a rural agricultural area. It turns out this park has a bit of a back story. While today it's a welcoming community park, it was once the site of the Orlando Game Club, an illegal cockfighting ring. Thankfully it is now a family friendly outdoor space that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors. Opened in 1974, the 40 acre Orlo Vista Park gave the growing unincorporated Orange County community a much needed place to enjoy the outdoors. The park continued to grow along with the community. In 1995, after support from local residents, Orange County invested in major improvements that expanded the park's facilities and enhanced the landscape. Those upgrades helped transform it into the park so many enjoy today. Now, Orlo Vista Park offers a recreation center, playgrounds, athletic fields, walking paths, picnic pavilions with tables and grills, basketball courts, fishing pier, and a community garden. I had a lovely summer evening stroll through the park where I saw many people enjoying all the park has to offer. It even serves as an official seasonal cooling center during periods of extreme heat. Orlo Vista Park is a great example of how a community can take a site with a terrible past and turn it into something good for the community.

Heritage Square Park is a popular public space in downtown Orlando but dig a little deeper and you…read morewill realize it is also an important historical site. In 1857, Orlando's city limits were platted in Heritage Square Park. In 1892, the newly formed city of Orlando built their first courthouse in what is now the middle of the park. Back then you might have seen wild pigs making their home next to the courthouse steps. In 1927 a neoclassical courthouse was built to replace the old courthouse and in 2000 it became the Orange County Regional History Center where you can take in history and cultural exhibits. Today the park has public art, a paved walkway, and open green spaces which are used for festivals, concerts, and events. In 2024, 3,600 new shrubs were planted in the park to create a more inviting environment. The design was created to evoke the beauty of a native Florida spring. In the past I have stopped in Heritage Square Park to sit and rest when walking the downtown. During this visit we walked through the park to get to the Bellhop. I admired the trees and greenery which really spruced the park up. The central location of Heritage Square Park makes it an easily accessible meeting point in the city.

If you want to be in the heart of Celebration, look no further than Celebration Lakeside Park…read more Located in downtown Celebration on the shores of Lake Rianhard, the lake is named after Richard "Dick" Rianhard, a beloved local resident who pioneered several of Celebration's organizations including a fishing program for children. he is remembered for being a cheerful neighbor who left a lasting impact on the community. Designed by The Walt Disney Company in the 1990s, the park serves as Celebration's main recreational hub. Amenities include a swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, and playgrounds. Many of these facilities require a resident key and are reserved for Celebration residents who pay community fees. Visitors, however, are welcome to enjoy the rocking chairs, picnic tables, umbrellas, and the scenic wooden boardwalk that circles the lake. Keep an eye out for the park's resident alligator, which is occasionally spotted along the shoreline. Just steps away, you'll find downtown Celebration's charming shops and a variety of restaurants. The park also hosts numerous festivals and community events throughout the year, including Independence Day celebrations, Founders Day, the Embrace of Celebration Music Festival, Battle of the Food Trucks, Once Upon a Magic Market, the Celebration Farmers Market, holiday parades, and seasonal runs. It also serves as the starting point for town-wide 5K races and the staging area for the community's Veterans Day Parade. During my visit, I enjoyed strolling along the lakeside boardwalk and taking in the peaceful scenery. Unfortunately, the lawn had been recently fertilized with what smelled like horse manure, and the odor was overwhelming. The strong smell made it impossible to linger and I cut my visit short, which was disappointing given the park's otherwise beautiful setting.

Greenwood Urban Wetlands is a 19 acre nature park in Orlando. It lies on the west side of Greenwood…read moreCemetery which was established in 1880 and is where many of Orlando's notables and pioneers lie at rest. The wetlands were created in 1991 between the Lake Davis and Lake Como neighborhoods as a stormwater treatment facility to handle the water run off. While the main purpose of the park is to clean the reclaimed water, a welcome byproduct of that is that it attracts a lot of wildlife. Wetland parks are some of my favorite kind of parks because they attract a variety of wildlife including wading birds, migrating birds, lizards, turtles, and alligators. At the entrance to the park is a community garden and Little Library. My favorite part of the park is the 0.7-mile loop trail surrounding Lake Greenwood that takes approximately 13 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking and walking. Along the way you will pass cypress trees, cross two bridges, and see a variety of birds enjoying the lake. Animals that have been spotted here include blue jays, ducks, barn owls, and red wing blackbirds. During my visit I saw a Great Blue Heron and a Great Egret along with ducks. The scenery during my walk was stunning. I saw a number of people reading, playing with their kids, and exercising. This is an ideal place to practice your photography, bird, watch, and have a picnic. This is such a wonderful natural resource for the city of Orlando and I loved my visit.
