While the staff was nice I would not come here again. I asked for Amaretto since I couldn't find it and was told a gift box version was all they had - at checkout I learned that might not have been the case but decided to just proceed with my purchase for time. When I opened the box the cup that came with the Amaretto was already cracked. I also picked up bloody mary mix that was being sold at the checkout counter - the next day I found the mix had expired in November 2024, almost a month to the date of purchase. I'm not really sure why I don't go more often. They have funny sayings on the sign outside, they have a decent selection of craft beers, and the people are helpful enough, you just need to find them. Since the renovation the place is a TON easier to navigate, and while the place doesn't feel spacious, or anything... It's still a good store. I don't feel like anything is gonna topple off it's shelf and kill me, and I know I can get that bottle off the top shelf - all I need to do is ask somebody! They can look in the computer and tell you exactly what they have, and then they can tell you where it can be found.... Finding it? Seems like that's on you, bigguy! Good luck! I didn't find the one 6-pack of Geary's Pale Ale tonight... Bummed out, I grabbed some beers that I knew we would like, and one Sam Adams specialty beer to try. Pretty swanky. Holy cow, choose your side in the SavMor wars! This place is like Twilight, or Vegemite, you either love it or you hate it. Well, I just like it. So there. It elicits no pro/neg passion from me. It's a bit of a dump on the outside and inside, but I have generally had good experiences here. I'm a nerd for craft beer, especially ish that's on the local tip, and they have a pretty decent stock in the back corner. Don't worry, you can still get your multi-pack of High Life or PBR or whatever you people born in 1988 drink now. All your favorite liquor friends can be found here, with a few novelty surprises. I have a somewhat intense relationship with Babycham each December and this is one of the few places I've found that stocks my love. $5.49 + tax for a GUARANTEED good night? Bargain of my life. I've had to ask for assistance on finding something a couple of times, and the staff were actually really pleasant and helpful. I'm not sure I would ask for advice on the actual products or get any real recommendations on say wine, though. I don't mind that it's a straight mess in here as I have a penchant for cluttered used bookstores and dusty dive bars anyway. SavMore is a pretty legit liquor store on McGrath Highway in Somerville. Let me break it down real quick. The pros: A pretty dang good selection of booze. Ample shelves of liquor, tons of beer (cheap stuff and craft stuff; packs, racks, and singles; cold and room temp), and a wide variety of wine. The neutral: The prices. They aren't particularly cheap for the area, but they're also not particularly bad. Some stuff you find you'll say "Wow, that's a pretty good deal!" whereas other stuff you might kind of go "Hmm...seems a little steep" but in either case it's only by a couple of dollars one way or the other. As such you may or may not SavMore! (Ha! Get it?) The cons: Well there's usually some hobos hanging around out front, but I think it's more because there's a can redemption center there. I've never been approached for anything or hassled or anything but it can be a little awkward. Also, some of the stuff on the shelves is really old. Some of the beers have like dust on the bottles and one time I brought up an interesting looking single Belgian bottle up and asked for a price check and they realized it had been there for years and couldn't sell it to me. This has happened only once but it's worth noting. I was kinda undecided as to whether I should rate SavMore 3 or 4 stars but I gave it the latter for convenience for me as it's like a 3 minute walk from my house. All in all it's a worthy packie. Their High West Double Rye was marked at $38.99-- $10 more than other area stores. That's why I asked the salesperson about it, because that price seemed WAY out of line. He certainly didn't correct me and say the price is really $28.99. Nor did he say anything. He just walked away. We were standing by the bourbon, so that's when I asked if they sold Buffalo Trace, which I didn't see on the shelf. But apparently asking about the price of High West put me on the outs with your sales guy, because he wouldn't answer my question. You do not carry White Horse. Maybe you carry other inexpensive scotch, maybe you don't. Maybe if your salesperson had helped me, I'd know the answer. Loss for both of us. I really did not find them all that cheap, especially considering their out of the way location, which probably equals cheap rent. And while their selection is decent, I'm not impressed. Years ago, I lived around the corner from a beer distributor. That also was an out of the way location in a pricier 'hood. They had 500+ varieties of beer, neatly organized. It's called East Coast Beer (not in Boston, of course). I call it heaven. But I digress. Just to see how their beer selection is, I asked for a specific beer that I cannot find up here but have no problem getting a couple of states away. They didn't have it. I moved to Massachusetts a number of years ago from Ohio. The first thing I had to get used to was the fact that in Massachusetts you can't buy alcohol in grocery stores. You might think this wouldn't be much of a problem since there's usually a liquor store in the vicinity of most grocery stores. But because the liquor stores in Ohio compete with the grocery stores, they rely on a massive amount of selection. The variety of beer that you can find in an Ohio liquor store is astounding. Because liquor stores have less competition and because of the space limits in Boston, liquor stores in Massachusetts usually have a paltry selection. (Sometimes living on the East Coast is like living in the Middle Ages). Sav-Mor Liquors on McGrath Highway is the closest thing I've found to an Ohio style liquor store. The place has a Spartan appearance. It looks like a large warehouse. But there are rows upon rows of beer and liquor. You can find something at just about any price range and for nearly any occasion. The staff is friendly and helpful as well. The store has something of a quirky personality, and they put up a different message on their sign every few weeks or so. One of the only problems I've found with the place is that it is difficult to walk there, and it's really only accessible to those with cars. Alright - I have the bar set pretty low for liquor stores..I mean come on, its a packy! But this place..THIS place is ridiculous!!! After going to the Sav-Mor in Medford to find them out of my favorite cider, we called the Somerville location to have them set a few aside. So, the next day, we made a special trip. Here lies the mistake.... Stuff is stacked everywhere - and way too high, dangerously high. Going through the store is like a creepy labyrinth of narrow halls surrounded by adult beverages! While that sounds dreamy at first, I assure you - the layers of dust caked on everything around you quickly snaps you back into reality. Then..THEN - they didn't set aside the cider anyway, and they were now out! So, they placated us on the phone, we made the trip, they were out and couldn't seem to care less. The manager (could have even been owner) didn't even express concern that something was set aside for me and they were now out - less then 16 hours later (we got there before they even opened and sat in the car waiting). Of course I made the next mistake...having the nerve to ask when it would be in, when the next shipment was expected. You would have thought I asked him to sacrifice his first born. Short version: Avoid this place at all costs. The service is horrid. The condition of the store and goods is unacceptable. read more

The prices here are not especially low or 'discount'. They seem are right in line with your smaller neighborhood package store. Atlas, Kappy's, Blanchards all have more reasonable prices, but alas, I often end up at Sav-Mor just because the location is way more convenient. Maybe the name refers to the owners. I know one way they Sav-Mor. On more than a few occasions, I've seen workers opening 12 packs of cans and repackaging them into six pack ringer containers. And I've seen the same with cases of beer being opened and repackaged into generic, white 6 pack cardboard sleeves! This has to be illegal, right? I don't see how a retailer can be permitted to repackage booze into units they were not initially purchased to be sold in, especially considering the very specific alcohol regulations of Massachusetts. See for yourself. Go to the beer cooler and look for the all white six packs with the brand scribbled on it in ballpoint ink. I even purchased a small bag of chips once. The sticker read $1.39 . When I got home I peeled off the sticker and beneath it? The msrp was printed directly on the bag by the manufacturer. $1.19! They even rip you off on a snack bag of chips! All that being said, they do have a great beer selection, with very helpful brew info listed for your perusal. read more

On the outside, this doesn't look like the kind of place where you would find some great quality wine and beers. It's located right next to a carwash and just outside the front door homeless people cash in cans and bottles hoping to earn enough change to enter the store themselves and walk away with a bottle of grandpa's cough syrup. Things don't improve that much when you go inside either, empty boxes litter the floor and the staff often resembles cast members for A&E's "Intervention" show. The real sparkle of this misspelled gem is that if you are willing to look around a bit you can almost always find something unique and at a better value then you would expect to find it a classier looking booze palace. East Cambridge is full of places where I can walk out the door with a six pack of Bud or Miller, but suppose I want something a little more exotic and want to visit countries other then Heineken. When that happens SavMor is the place I go, the do have a do have a decent selection of just about any liquid that you can imbibe in at a more then reasonable price. Think of this place like Haymarket late on a Saturday afternoon. Things look a little sketchy and there may be a unique odor in the air, but if you're willing to poke around I'll guarantee you'll find something to brag about to your friends. read more

This is THE place to stock up if you're having a throw down. In the past, when we've needed 30 racks of cheap beer, this is where we stock up on the High Life for cheap. They actually have a good selection of good booze, but from here, we've mainly gone for the cheaper stuff. Why? It's a good $5 cheaper than getting it somewhere else. "Discount Liquors" definitely caught my eye. I wasn't sure if this meant damaged goods or an inappropriate ratio of alcohol to other parts, but I was ready to find out. Turns out that most liquor really isn't discounted by that much, maybe a dollar or two. They also make it more difficult by not showing the original price, just an orange sticker that makes you think the price has been marked down by a lot. Either way, nothing was more expensive than a regular liquor store, so I'll take it. They had a huge selection - pretty much everything that you could think of. They sold four packs and six packs and twelve packs and everything else packs. They even sold some single bottles of beer. They had some discontinued brews and some seasonals that had already disappeared most places. I don't drink beer, but I assume beer drinkers would think this was cool. They actually have a surprisingly good wine selection. "Eccentric" is the word I would use to describe it. Lots of bottles from random, international wineries, which are sometimes the best kind. It looks like some bottles have been there for a while, as they're dusty. This place is easy to get to - just take the Green E Line to Lechmere and either walk a couple minutes down the highway, or take the 87. Pretty cool place, I'd definitely come back. read more

I bought a couple cases of beer here while getting my car inspection taken care of (a month late) next door. I concur with michael m on their exceptional selection of beer. I bought some Sol (mexican) and Asahi (japanese). The beer selection is so varied, to prove the point, I noted five different Israeli beers. How many places around here have Israeli beer? The guy knows his stuff here, ask him about anything you don't see. Bring a vehicle if you have one, or friends to carry the booty. Good selection. Similar prices to other places, very fair. TERRIBLE keg ordering experience. Stay away. Ordered a keg of specialty beer for a gathering a week ahead of time, paid for it and left. Fast forward to pick it up a week later and they didn't have it - no explanation, just "all we have is this" and then the front line cashiers attitude went to an 11 when I wanted an explanation and was a bit perturbed - refused to even acknowledge they made a mistake. I believe I gave them my contact info when ordering - but no pone call to tell me they couldn't get the beer I wanted. I know this sounds stupid, but I've never checked to see if I actually save money at Sav-Mor. The prices seem reasonable and they have a good selection, so I've never been disappointed. Here's the thing: they have a parking lot. They have a BIG parking lot. It is amazing! I live in Central and it's tough to get a spot near a liquor store. That's fine if you want to buy a bottle of wine or a six pack. But what if you want to buy two thirty racks of Miller Lite even though you're 31 and should probably be upgrading? You don't want to carry 60 beers on your 15 minute walk home! No! So go to this place, like me, and drive your cheap beer home like a happy person. read more

This is my go-to place for any serious liquor shopping. It's not the destination for lillet or chartreuse or anything buy Angostura bitters, but if you need bulk booze, it's for you. They do have some high-ish end alcohol. They've got Chimay, meads, random mid-west microbrews, and top-shelf gins and vodkas. They even had Calvados when I was looking for it, and Amarula. But the obscure, fancy-pants stuff isn't why you end up on McGrath Highway, winding your little cart through mountains of bottles in what's basically a warehouse. Other reviewers have said that the prices are cheap. They are. Think $5-10 cheaper per 1.75L handle than most places, and even more if you're used to shopping in Central. The industrial mega brew beer prices don't get any lower in this state. I've never tried to buy good wine here, but I've shopped for many large (60-200 people) parties here, and not been disappointed. They'll box up your purchases for you and help you carry them out to your car, should you have one. Given the amount of booze one is inspired to buy here, and the location, a car helps. Anyway, I heartily recommend SavMor. I just built the base of my home bar here, and I'll be back. read more

The ONLY thing that could make Save-Mor better is if they sold cool schwag, like koozies, tee-shirts and whatnot (but whatever, right?). As is, the place has the best and most affordable selection of beer, wine and booze in the area. I recently had- and loved- Narragansett Summer ale while in RI. I emailed Sav-Mor asking if they wouldn't mind getting some in stock. I received an email two days later saying that the beer had arrived. Even better? Sometimes I forget it's here, but when I'm in a pinch taking McGrath to Stop and Shop or trying to sneak out of kendall square the back way I am relieved to see this beacon of hope. The big self serve beer freezer keeps the beer perfectly cold. However, they regularly run out of our brand, sometimes for several days, but have warm ones on the shelf. Maybe a system to check more regularly would help. This location is super convenient. The a dedicated stop light makes entering and exiting really easy, but entering From route 28 South requires making a sharp (Probably Illegal) turn at the light or a quick u-turn at the McD's/Star market parking lot entrance. Miller Highlife LIGHT. Yeah, it exists... And they stock it at SavMor. (not SAVE-More, SAV-More) If you are stocking up your general supply this is the place. Its cheap and they have lots of beer, plus cases of stuff that in other stores can only be found in 6-packs (ex. sam and harpoon seasonals). Lots of 40s too. If you are looking for some obscure microbrew so people will think you're interesting at a party just because no ones heard of it, similiar to how you hunt for the most unknown mp3 for your ipod from some band whos never released an album because you refuse to listen to anything thats ever been mentioned on MTV, you need to cross back into Cambridge and buy it at your local "dive" bar because you are a pompous idiot, unlock your bike and peddle yourself home. read more

If you are squeamish, don't go to SavMor. You'll hate the cramped and sometimes dusty disorganized space and will be disturbed by the frankness of the staff. If you don't mind a little clutter and a bit of "that's right tough guy" customer service, you'll be just fine. This place isn't the cheapest for everything, but when you find a bargain, it will be a really good one. If I'm looking for a specific beer or spirit, I'll check here first hoping to find a really good deal. If I don't, I go to another liquor store that will have it, but at much greater expense. The real reason I come back again and again is that SavMor is amazing for stocking up when you want to throw a party. They have a good variety of beer, spanning the color spectrum from pale to dark, and the prices are generally right. I'm thinking this might be my new go-to liquor store. Thoughts: 1) When you first walk in, it's a little cramped...but you'll notice that the shelves are STOCKED and the booze ranges from super cheap to super expensive (but ultimately, all very affordable). 2) They have a lot of fun specialty alcohol... I wanted to buy all the flavored brandy (think of how good it would be in sangria!) 3) the store opens up to the wine + beer section. The beer was a total hodgepodge, but it's great if you like to dig around and see what's there. I was psyched by the whole last row of specialty beers. I'll need to go back, because I think it would be awesome to buy a bunch for a beer tasting party. 4) There was a free gift through Yelp by checking-in. The sales clerk ringing up my goods said she thought it was expired, but the other guy there insisted that they follow-through. ("Don't want to be falsely advertising!") They were both super nice. 5) One of the sales guys put all my booze in boxes and wheeled it out to my car for me. I've walked by many times and have been curious about this place, so I stopped in. They do have a large selection, but it was a friggin' mess (and I'm a messy guy)! The aisles are narrow and inventory is cluttered around like they didn't bother to finish stocking. Many of the walking lanes are not wider than one person. It's hard to tell if it's truly cheaper than other stores, because many items weren't marked with prices. Those that were didn't seem that much cheaper than any other dedicated liquor store. Many items that I have a generally knowledge of local price are the same or within a dollar of other shops. I wouldn't trust most of the room-temp beer if I knew the price anyway, because it looks like they've been sitting there for months... In fairness, there were some good deals here and there on domestic, 'big-brand' beer and some spirits. I saw a decent scotch at a $7-$10 discount, and I might swing by if I going to Shaw's or somewhere in Union Sq. The cashier was friendly enough, but I was pissed (mainly at myself for not noticing) that I was charged $2 more for my champagne -- and the box was clearly marked. It reminds me that the store is called "SavMor", not "Save More". I would still shop there if I was in the E. Somerville area, but it does not warrant going out of your way. read more

Anyone who has ever driven on McGrath Highway has seen the Sav-Mor sign and its truly awesome, witty headlines. Whoever is in charge of that sign certainly has a sense of humor, but I wish the service was as awesome as the sign. Speaking strictly for the beer selection, this place absolutely has some stuff. Plenty of craft brews, including a more than fair amount of them cold. The problem I have experienced here, every time, is that the people working the floor don't seem to know what is going on. They are stocking the shelves, yes, but ask them to find something specific, and they will do exactly what you did for the 5 + minutes before you asked for help: look up and down the shelves randomly. There doesn't seem to be any order or organization at all, just filling the open space. One time, I was anxious to grab some Nugget Nectar, and happened to be a week or two early, but when I asked the nearest employee if they had it, he walked to the shelves, same as I had, looked, said he didn't know, brought someone else, who looked at the same shelves, said they didn't know, then walked over to the manager, who was hidden in a room near the front. When they asked him if it was in stock, all I heard was a booming "NO!" from the room, without seeing the manager. The sign is awesome. The prices are fine, the selection is fine, but it's disorganized and don't expect anyone to actually help you figure it all out. read more

SavMor is one of the best liquor store around the Boston area. The prices are good, but not the cheapest around. The real gem is that they have a huge selection of beer from around the world.
