Gayle and I arrived at the Via Rail Saskatoon Station on Day 3 of our Canadian train journey from Toronto to Vancouver. We had a fair amount of time here, but the station is located within a CN rail yard and a long walk from anything interesting in town. So much for checking out the fastest growing City in Canada or wandering the leafy campus of the University of Saskatchewan!
The Train crew also kept us on a tight leash on where we could go. We could walk along the train platform from the back of the train to a post several feet from the petrol truck filling the engine. Walking on the in between dirt or walking over a set of rails? No, although the later made a lot of safety sense and the former was ridiculous. Thanks to my "Bad Boy" persona, I took Gayle through the station and to its front to walk towards the front CN gate unsupervised.
At the same time, we were happy to get outside. A 4-day train journey is great, but cabin fever can set in. Plus when they weren't serving as our hall monitors, the VIA staff continued their pleasant personalities, as part of their great overall train service. read more
