A month before elections and incredibly well organized. I thought I'd be in line for 30 minutes,…read morebut it was only 5 minutes. The volunteers at the door were quick to answer any questions and direct me where I needed to go. There were at least 12 windows open with a smiling staff. Literally I took each one in for a moment and they all seemed happy and pleasant with each customer. Behind the 'front line' were a number of other employees surveying and stepping in if there was an issue. When it was my turn, the gentleman was very professional and proficient. However there was an issue with my registration so the supervisor stepped right in. The issue was resolved immediately. I asked the supervisor about her level of stress at the current time. She replied 'I have none as the crew I have is great.' Yes, I would agree fully with her comment. Parking... no issue at all. Plenty of spaces and multiple ways to come and go. 5/5 stars on all aspects of the visit. Well done election commission!

The Douglas County Election Commission office is a well oiled machine. We travel a lot so usually…read moreearly vote, and that's done at this location. When it's a busy day or in the afternoon, yes it can get to be a pretty long wait. This year (2024), it took about two hours, including waiting in the line - which was the majority of the wait time. The actual voting was laid out well by the staff and took only about 10 minutes. Speaking of the staff, they were very pleasant and funny when we chatted with them. You can also pick up your ballot here and do the mail in option, or bring it back and put it in at the drop box outside this office. One thing to note, if you're voting here or anywhere else - there is a new statute banning electioneering (wearing political shirts, buttons, or talking about any of the ballot issues) while at any voting location. If you're going to vote early, this office is nice but probably a little busier than your normal polling place on Election Day since there are so many of those laid out across the city.

Who'd have thought that I'd have the opportunity to rate the US Government? Well, today while I…read morewas Yelping this gem showed up in my "Nearby Businesses" list and I couldn't resist. So, The US Government... I suppose, to be fair it is a well-intentioned bureaucracy. I don't believe that they ever set out to be "evil" no matter who is in charge of it. The problem is that you really can't please all of the people all of the time. Everytime something happens that we don't personally agree with we whine about how special interests are controling the government, while somehow overlooking that all special interest groups are essentially groups of like-minded citizens. Maybe democracy is the problem...Any time you get 51% of the people behind something it tends to happen, whether it is stupid or not. Two final points: 1. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. 2. The alternatives are all worse.

This is a very nice memorial that was introduced in 2009. It can be found at Lewis and Clark…read moreLanding and there is metered street parking and a commercial lot available for visitors to park. The memorial features an amazing bronze sculpture titled the protector. It is the work of Matthew Placzek and depicts a firefighter carrying a young girl while supporting a second, kneeling firefighter. You can feel the sculptures pride and pain. It was donated by Firefighters Union 385. The memorial's plaza area is set up in a circular formation with the stature in the center. There is a bench for visitor to sit and reflect in the area and there are 3 flag poles waving the American Flag in the center, flanked by the Nebraska State flag to its left and another flag to its right. The place is well lit at night and is well maintained. Its landscaping was in excellent shape and firefighters volunteer periodically to take care of it. There are two granite pillars that are about waist height, one marked with "Honor" and the other marked with "Tradition". The one with the word Honor has a bronze plaque on top of it that lists the 55+ Omaha firefighters that made the ultimate sacrfafice. The other pillar has a plaque on it that gives a history of Omaha firefighting, the union, and ends with a quote by Omaha Fire Department Chief Eugene Fields who died of pneumonia on January 8, 1962 after leaving a hospital bed to respond to a two-alarm fire. The quote reads, "Firemanship is a peculiar vocation steeped in tradition. The man who joins just to have a job shouldn't be a fireman. There's sort of a fraternity that surrounds men who face danger together. The fire department becomes a part of you and you of it." This is an awesome memorial and a fitting tribute to Omaha Bravest that made the ultimate sacrifice, but I do understand that this is probably not a destination attraction. so, as with most murals that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 10 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.
