Houston and the rest of the country could use more places like The Ronald McDonald House. I…read morerecently went on a tour of the facility as a potential volunteer and I was blown away by what they do. The Ronald McDonald House is an extremely low cost ($25/day) facility for families of pediatric patients undergoing treatment in the Texas Medical Center. The facility provides housing to patients who are undergoing treatment at several hospital including MD Anderson, Texas Children's, Memorial Hermann, etc... Priority housing is given to patients undergoing cancer treatment, but many different families stay here. This is so much more than a long term hotel. There are community rooms, computer access, playrooms, outdoor playgrounds, community kitchens, laundry facilities, and more! They even have special kitchens for transplant patients to store their food. Most days of the week, volunteers bring and serve food to families staying here. Best part of the whole place? The house dog, Mogie. Mogie was running around, playing with kids, and was putting a smile on everyone's face. Pet therapy is so important for patients and their families. Mogie was so cute, I wanted to scoop him up and bring him home with me! For $175 a week, a family can stay here, get free shuttle service to/from hospitals, and enjoy many free catered meals. I can't imagine how important a facility like this is when you are from out of town and your family is devastated by a life threatening medical diagnosis. I can't wait to start volunteering here! This organization should be ashamed of their selves! My family is not from Houston but a situation…read morehappened with one of my very close relatives that currently lives there. It took me days to encourage this family member to use her local resources to get some help with a situation that happened to her. She even had a terrible suicidal episode that morning because of her PTSD from what happened to her. She finally took my advice and contacted this organization 24/7 hotline. She was laughed at on the phone and was discouraged from reporting her incident. The night shift "supervisor" scheduled her an appointment with a counselor on November 10th to receive some help. That's 10 days later from the date of the phone call. Is that protocol? Is that how you are taught to assist your community members? I decided to call the hotline to speak with a supervisor, but I was met with the same lady. She refused to even provide her name to me so I can properly report her conduct on the phone. I'm not having to stay up tonight to sooth my relative from her experience and encourage to still report her incident. I hope no one has this experience and I hope this organization is shut down for a lack of knowledge and care for their community members. One word, DISGUSTING.

HAWC's services include domestic and sexual assault crisis hotlines (open 24 hr/day, 713-528-2121 for domestic violence and 713-528-7273 for sexual assault), as well as anonymous shelter and counseling for victims of abuse. I volunteered for about a year and a half on HAWC's hotlines, and ever since Hurricane Ike the number of people seeking HAWC's services has increased triple or quadruple fold. This is partially because many of the shelters and other non-profits on the Gulf Coast were closed after the hurricane. HAWC also provides advocacy for victims, and education and training for the greater Houston community. If you or someone you know is a victim of sexual or domestic abuse, or if you just want to learn more about how to prevent such abuse, HAWC is an excellent place to turn to for help!

I have only been going to this place for about 2 months at first everything seemed great I got the…read morehelp that I need it especially when it comes to mail being homeless getting your mail is tough so I go in I meet the director Randi Lewis at first I thought she was a good person with a good heart well people can easily be the wolf in sheep's clothing and I found that out very quickly with this director I'm currently on disability SSDI and SSI well I needed a new mailing address and she was willing to help me out of course having everything I already had insurance food stamps and everything else I didn't really need to do any of their programs and she knew this well as time went by I have noticed that these volunteers seem to lack normal human traits not being professional but being human if you're going to volunteer to help people then at least be human enough to introduce yourself to people instead of walking around like a bunch of retards the way these people act but that's besides the point I gave Randi my opinion about my experience and I guess she didn't take it very well being a director she should be biased when it comes to complaints and giving ideas I thought everything was great this woman claims that she's a friend to me when I don't even know her at all she doesn't talk to me perfect example yesterday I come out of my Uber there she was she didn't even look at me she didn't even greet me which is fine by me I don't have time for fake people well yesterday I lost my mailing address because she can't force me to join the programs and started using my mail as leverage against me for not joining the programs which is okay I have proof of everything that I say to begin with I will be making complaints to every entity that has to do with this homeless organization I highly advise that if you need help do not come here these people are highly retarded very unhelpful and they only care about one thing getting your signature so they can get money for a tax write-off I got plenty of proof of everything so I'm not worried about what these idiots have to say about me
