The carvery here is of particular good value especialy if you go on more off peak times, which are week day lunchtimes and evenings. there is usualy a choice of three roasts and a vegetarian option. there are plenty of fresh to choose from and always boiled and raoast potatoes and of course there is always a nice big fluffy yorkie pudding too! mmmmm. We visited with some friends so there were 4 Adults and 4 kids on a Saturday afternoon we only had 2 drinks each and the bar bill was twice the cost of the food. The staff were very attentive without being over powering, the young lady tending to us was very pleasant and struck up a rapport with us very quickly. The bar staff have an endless knowledge of the products on sale and are obviously all real ale fanatics themselves. They are very friendly, polite and easy to approach. The clientèle are also very knowledgeable and friendly. There are no riff raff and no druggies in this pub. It all makes for an amazing experience.

The menu is pub grub and I thought pretty average to be honest. Of the three meals we had I thought two were pretty ordinary. The atmosphere however is great and it is well patronised by locals. The toilets are diabolical but no worse than most pubs, and a nice looking beer garden must be good in summer.

I ordered eggs royal and some toast for the children I also had a filtered coffee which was unlimited refill. The toast was missing for our order and my muffins were so hard they were unedible. After a wait at the bar to ask for the toast and to change my muffins I decided to sit down as the service was so slow. Eventually after everyone in my party had finished eating I caught the eye of the waitress who apologised and changed my breakfast and brought the toast, by which time we were not wanting the toast (as I said everyone had finished their breakfast). While waiting on my seconded breakfast i went to get another coffee however the pot of coffee was empty so i had to wait more than 10 minuets to get a refill. My second breakfast was lovely and all the members I was out with did have a good experience.

We went through a phase a few summers back of visiting their beer garden quite regularly. It had a weird petting zoo vibe, as they keep chickens and breed some sort of scary dog. The bar is cheap but it only sells a predictable and limited range of gassy lagers and big brand spirits. Probably best not to order the wine here. They will look at you funny. I like the dartboard and have had a few fun games with some of the locals. One of the guys had a tattoo ON HIS FACE, yet he was quite the charmer.

Hmm, where to start…read more.. ...I guess I could start by pointing out that no one local calls The Swan by its proper name. It is known locally as "Jaspers". I don't know why. Jaspers is the starting point for many a "crap town pub crawl". It epitomises the genre of pub I affectionately refer to as "bit of a crap hole". I rarely swear, but I've used the less offensive c-word twice already in this review. So you should be aware by now that this place is more than a bit pants. I just asked my husband for a slightly nicer way to describe the interior and he has come up with "spit and sawdust". Though I'd say there's more spit than any actual woodshavings. A redeeming feature is that they serve Holden's ales, yet the rest of the bar is pretty bog standard stuff. The names of the weekly DJs and entertainers displayed on the boards outside are always quite funny.

If you haven't experienced the Black Country way of drinking then give it a go :) The pub usually just has the landlord as bar staff (though at busier times you may see an extra helper) who knows all the locals by both name and "usual" from the bar. Although on entry the bar is fairly basic lager, ale, stout, scratchings, crisps and house spirits it's the way the experience comes together; there's always a friendly vibe and a nod of "how do?" from the locals when you enter, the ale is near perfect from the taps every pint (also helped be being one of my favourite ales - Enville!). TV channels on the flat screen can be changed at request and if you don't fancy the wooden clad bar room there is the slightly plusher lounge or the smoking shelter / mini beer patio out back. Always an enjoyable visit!
