Myself & 2 friends each tried Ethiopian food for the 1st time today. I expected to find at least 1 thing I didn't like, but was pleasantly surprised, everything was delicious. We will definitely be going back! Signage outside is not very clear, but it's in the same physical area as the hookah lounge so when you've found that door, that's where you enter. Seating options: small bar area, regular tables, some couches. Everything looked clean & smelled nice (no smokiness). It was quiet for most of our visit, but they might've turned on some low music part way through, not sure what it was or if I'm misremembering. Appetizers: tried to order 3 vegi & 3 meat sambusa, but unfortunately they were out of the latter. Vegi sambusa was crispy on the outside & had a mixture of veggies on the inside. The middle was noticeably cooler in temperature, but the texture & flavor made up for that. I'm very sensitive to spicy food & this did have a bit of heat build up, but faded pretty quickly afterwards. We also ordered the Ethiopian coffee service. It was poured into a small tea cup, white with a silver design, beautiful presentation. The coffee was strong, but not very bitter like some are, served with sugar (optional) & a spoon. I normally have coffee with milk too, but this was still very pleasant without. We also asked for some waters, served in disposable bottles. Ordered the doro wat combo, which is essentially an entree sampler platter. A tour of what everything was on the platter would've been nice (I should've just asked), but I think I was able to figure out what each dish was using Google, menu descriptions, & process of elimination. I thought we might need to order another entree afterwards, but it ended up being plenty of food between the 3 of us, we even had some food left over. The combo was served on a platter, on top of an injera (fermented flathead), which has many small holes, spongy in texture. We were also provided another injera rolled up & halved, served on the side. We were going for the authentic experience so we didn't ask if they have silverware, as the intent is to rip off pieces of the injera & eat with your hands, using it to scoop up the food. The fermentation was slightly noticeable in the flavor, but mostly it didn't taste like much, which I think is the point, as not to overshadow the other foods. I believe the shiro (spicy chickpea stew) was what I tried 1st, dark red in color, just my luck it was also the spiciest. Even 1 bite the spiciness was strong, but I figured out later that it's best paired with the ayib (crumby cheese, similar to feta) to help with the heat. The chicken wat (spicy stew made with onions, garlic, ginger) was less spicy, served with a boiled egg & a drumstick. Meat was very tender & well seasoned, great flavor. The other 4 items were all vegetable dishes. One red/orange-ish that I'm guessing was a red lentil (not whole lentils, but crushed maybe) stew, very tangy, good flavor. A bright yellow split-pea stew, also good flavor. Collard greens, which when I've had the southern American version I have not cared for, so I was quite surprised when these were delicious. Yellow colored cabbage, paired with chunks of potato & carrot, a very bright & savory dish. We thought that was everything, but part way through enjoying our platter that started out packed full, Sara brought out another dish that was included in the combo. Luckily we had made some room by then, so she added it to the display. This was the meat tibs, sautéed beef I believe, served with a small amount of veggies mixed in (onion slices, tomato chunks, etc), & a side salad (lettuce & tomato lightly tossed in a dressing, perhaps made with just vinegar & oil). Salad was very simple, but fresh & crisp. Meat had a steak texture, very well seasoned & flavorful. Overall, my favorite dish was the meat tibs, so if I go back & order a dish I don't plan to share, that would be my go to. But honestly, I'd rather visit with friends again so we can order the doro wat combo & share it. I enjoyed the variety of the vegetable dishes, as they each had a different flavor & different texture, but complimented each other well. My least favorites were the 2 spicier dishes, simply because of my being sensitive to lingering heat, not because they lacked in good flavor. If you run out of injera like we did, don't hesitate to ask for more, it's a small price for extra. If you've read this far, thank you. I'm a foodie with sensory concerns, so while trying new-to-me cuisine can be exciting, it can be risky going into a new place & the uncertainty of everything can cause anxiety. I hope my detailed review makes visiting this restaurant less daunting for someone who isn't sure what to expect. The food was high quality, very filling, great flavors & good textures, so I have zero complaints. It's worth taking a chance on & I hope you enjoy it! read more

This is within "King Coal" - hooka bar!! Thought there is no external sign for the restaurant! It's a restaurant all day, and changes to the hooka-bar at 7pm. No obvious smoke smells when I visited at 4:30pm. Food was very good, kind of like Indian, but a different spice set. The only thing was the bread (gluten free grain) took a little getting used to. The chicken, beef, vegetables, and lentils were very well prepared. "I" would have preferred all of it with rice, not sure that's an option. The owners were good people and did I mention gluten free!! No smoke smells. And no external signs - they are underselling this place. read more

We ordered the sambusa appetizer which was never delivered and we had to point this out when paying because it was on the bill. The bread is very light and strange (bitter?) and is the only utensil for eating the sides. The Ethiopian coffee was very good and at least it gave me a tiny spoon to try to eat the sides. The leftovers were the giant round of bread with a few scoops of the sides which had completely soaked through the bread by the time I got it home. Not at all appetizing. I am happy for the other customers who enjoyed the experience, I will not be returning. read more

Food- was amazing. Served in a large plate with injera at the bottom with several items on top. 3 kinds of lentil dishes, chicken curry with hardboiled egg, cabbage curry, green beans, collard greens, and some salad. For people who are not familiar with Ethiopian food, it is meant to be eaten with hand using extra injera bread family style. Me and my wife shared a Dora Wat Combo and it was plenty for both of us. Sara and Tedros came out with the food. This is a combo Ethiopian restaurant and a hookah bar after hours. Sign is only for the hookah bar, so the place is little hard to find. Once found, it will become your favorite. Service and ambiance were good. Hope this place stays as owners have no social media, and the news of this spreading only by word of mouth. read more

Used to live in Los Angeles - love Ethiopian Food. Super excited to have it here in Wichita. Ordered the combo to go. Totally took me back. I'm getting takeout once a week now! Returned to King Koal for another round of Ethiopian food for lunch, bringing my best friend Deborah with me. We indulged in the Doro Wat Combo meal( big enough for 2, easily). The chicken was Spicy and saucy with a boiled egg, and the beef tibs were tender and flavorful. Once again, the vegetables were Dynamite! The Dal, Cabbage, beans, and green beans were fabulous. The salad dressing on the lettuce was delicious, and I could have taken a bottle of that dressing home with me. Sara treated us to a 2nd helping of green beans, because they were so hot fresh, and delicious, we could not stop eating them. I also indulged in hot, strong, black ethiopian coffee, that had an almost chocolate roasted flavor. We ate the meal with our hands, using the spongy injera bread to scoop the food up with, into bite size portions. It was a fun, social way to eat our meal. We took our time, and enjoyed every bite, eating everything on the platter. Sara came by to check on us several times, as did Tedro. Amazingly nice hosts, with amazingly great food! read more
